What catagory do you fit in regarding painting?

I\'m a bit curious on the demographics of the painters here. When I see the great painted minis posted on the CMON site, I wonder if most or all are just \"purist\" painters who love painting minis but have little or no interest in gaming itself. Which would explain the time and focus in creating such excellent work.

I ask because I wonder if I\'m the only guy driving myself nuts (Too late, already there) trying to decide which activity I really want to do. I enjoy painting minis, build terrain, play 40K and RPGS, and dink around experimenting with sculpting and model conversions. Kinda jack-of -alll trades and master of none sorta thing---But I still want to paint like the big boys/girls. Am I being unrealistic in striving to improve my painting if I am distracted doing other such activities? Or is it still possible to have the best of both worlds and still improve my painting level, abeit at a slower pace.

I paint cos I like painting. I used to roleplay, and originally painted characters for it, but havent done so for a while. Wargaming and terrain - never been interested in it (and the terrain bit reflects in my really boring bases).

I used to want to game but no one seems to play around my area so I just concentrate on painting now.

I\'m in your shoes, Stiff. I love painting and I want to paint like a master, but I like to game, too. My problem is, I\'m no good at wargames, so I seem to be leading myself down the path of not playing ;P

It was wargaming that introduced me to this hobby - 40K Tyranids about 6 years ago, gave them all away. Now I have Dark Elves and Tomb Kings that I\'ve never played with. I paint for the sake of painting now, something that fits right in with my schizoid tendencies.

The brush is mightier than the Executioners\' swords.

I started painting because my GW rep sent me the Fantasy box set and asked me to play. Now I paint because I like to and to have cool representations of m,y D&D characters. :D

Strictly a painter. I don\'t play wargames were you HAVE to buy the figure to play. I can\'t afford it with my other hobbies. And my choice of gaming time is limited too.

well, the original battletech was supposed to be based on the little figures but then we figured out anything that points in a direction and fits on the hex will work. And then I found Megamek. My first warhammer 40K game went something like this: You have all those troops and I have this small squad which happens to have a $40 figure leading it. All right, you go. You didn\'t wound anybody - sorry. My turn. All your guys can no longer move. Boy that was easy.

Nah - don\'t like it. I am a huge fan of Formula De though. I have a set of the cars to paint. They are pretty tiny and not cast very well. I am having difficulty prepping them.

Anyway, wargames, yes. Axis & Allies, Risk. Those are the wargames I play. Oh, and War & Sheep.

i pretty much at the momment paint cause i enjoy it and it relieves stress (80% of time) hehe but i do play occasionally and i wish to do so more in the future. but i have neither the space or time to devote to both.. is like my music is really on a forced hiatus! and im concentrating on painting

I used to paint to play and still cling desparately to that fading ideal, but a lack of people to play and my rampant desire to become the best i could possibly be kinda strangles that hope.
I would like to be able to play but i feel i need to \"level up\" my painting so im taking a bit of a rest from gaming standard and going to focus purely on creating (what i like to think of as) works of art (or 6.5 to CMON standard.....well i never.)

I definitely think you can improve painting. While doing all those other things, you are hopefully keeping yourself from burning out or getting a bad case of Painters\' Block. If you get a little bit of painting done, maybe even just a figure or two a month, you can improve a lot as long as you push yourself to make each mini better.

Pretty close, Doc. I\'ve been invited to play some games, and I keep saying when I have a reasonable army composition properly painted. That\'s never likely to happen when it takes 6 hours just to do the flesh on one single sorceress (cheers, Klute! :p ). So I drop the stress and paint for the love of painting.

Actually, the original battletech was supposed to be based on cardboard standup cards with pictures of mechs on them. Same for the original Blood Bowl. Then the makers found out there was a lot of $ to be made in selling the little figures.

I like playing more than painting, but playing requires more than one person so I paint more than play.

As to games requiring you to buy the pieces, I refuse to play with someone who won\'t let you substitute minis. I have an entire Bretonian army in the wings that is completely cheap ParkerBrothers figures from some other game. If you won\'t let me use it I won\'t game with you.
If you tell me all those goblins with spears are actually space marines then they are space marines. The game is the thing.

I\'m a pure painter. I\'d like to play or observe a game, but i dont really know any people who play any of these miniature games. I know theres couple of \"real\" hobbyists with big armies of confrontation in the same town, but i have never built up enough courage to PM them :( Maybe someday...

PS. vincegamer, congratulations about breaking 2000 posts.

too many..

I\'ve tried my hand at almost all aspects of this hobby, but gaming is definately the one that gets the very least amount of attention (if any).

I mostly enjoy the \'hobbying\' part. Terrain, sculpting, painting, etc...
