What decade?

90\'s. I have no frame of reference so I can only look at other decades with retrospect to those whose experiences I\'ve read or listened to. Grew up with Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Beavis and Butthead, Tales from the Crypt, Super Nintendo, and copious amounts of baseball. I remember my sister\'s husband leaving for desert storm to drive tanks. Clinton and Monica. The attempted assassination in \'93 against Bush and subsequent bombings. Israel kicks Iran in the teeth. Etc.

Not me, but the girls:

Hair so big, they had to work to get it all in their toyotas. Or if two of them were in the car, the hair would make it impossible to see the rear view mirror.

I\'d have to take best bits from the 80\'s to the present.

80\'s: Great movies like Star Wars, Poltergeist and TV shows like Wonder Woman and Buck Rogers - those were the days of seriously glamorous and feminine pin-up idols, you don\'t see women like that anymore.

90\'s: INTERNET!!!!!!

2000-present... Internet porn and animé - I can live without porn but I can\'t go a day without cartoons. :)

I used to play outside with friends on my own until dark every night. I could ride my bike 5-7 miles across town to friends\' houses without my parents having much need for concern...

...I\'d never let my kid do that now. Things sure have changed a lot. In many ways better, but in many others...not so much.

80\'s - grew up playing baseball in fields and soccer in the street until the streetlights came on. Life was easy and neighbors really were neighbors.

90\'s - Probably my decade. Really had a blast in the early 90\'s in junior high and high school, but college in the late 90\'s was one of the best times of my life and I still didn\'t really have any real responsibility. I was a frat boy and a solid student, but this was the time that I truly learned the value of friendship.

00\'s - Not too shabby either. Found, fooled, dated and married my now-wife. Had my first son, (second is due in December), found this hobby of ours, and began the life of an adult in earnest. There\'ve been ups and there\'ve been downs. I\'ve laughed, I\'ve cried, but all in all, it\'s been better than \"Cats.\"

10\'s - looking forward to it.

1990\'s - escaped high school, toughed it out through too many years of university (8.5!). Enjoyed \"The X-Files\", riot girl rock, the insanity of communal living, and discovered how much fun actual naked women could be. Learned and taught my scientific interests, and the oft-ugly realities of academe. Made my now-oldest friends too.

Does that make it \"my decade\"? I dunno... I\'m only 33 and I need some more perspective to make a claim like that.

Let\'s see, now.

In the 70\'s, at the age of 8, I bought my first miniature (1979). It was a wizard that looked rather like Gandalf, and I painted it with Testors enamels. It looked absolutely horrible, and I still have it somewhere. With the same paint job. By 1980, I had spent my allowance on a regular basis, buying every miniature I could get my hands on from the only hobby shop I was aware of at the time, Keith\'s Hobbies.
Fellow Torontonians familiar with this shop at all, please join me in bowing heads for a moment of silence, as they\'ve left their location by Yonge and Empress, and have moved to Whitby, after more than 40 years of business in the same place.

In the 80\'s, there was a bigger allowance, and a paper route, and so, more money to buy miniatures. I painted perhaps one of every fifty I bought, and the rest went into storage (a shoebox, no blisters. What did I know about collecting?) until such time as I felt like staging great wars between the forces of good and evil on my bedroom floor. Stats? Who needed them. The good guys always win. Even in the 80\'s. (Megaforce was my favourite movie, but I was too young to have taste, yet, when it came out) I had a huge crush on Cyndi Lauper, because she was so completely different from anything I\'d ever seen in my young and sheltered life.
Moved a lot in the first half of the 80\'s, so things were pretty rocky for a while, but always, I managed to find places to buy miniatures. Amazingly enough, they seem to be almost everywhere, if you look hard enough.
Hair bands, glam rock, Glam Hair Rock, sweat bands and leg warmers (thanks Flashdance), even on guys, sometimes.
Acid wash jeans came and went faster than a stock car going full out.
I discovered bicycling (for more than getting from A to B), weight lifting, boxing, tae kwon do, karate, judo, aikido, running, and girls, about in that order.
From what I\'ve been told, girls discovered me more quickly, but I was quite oblivious.
\"Wil, want to come over and study? My parents are out of town.\"
\"Sorry. I have a 20 mile ride scheduled, tonight.\"
I think the only reason they didn\'t start to hate me was because I was sincere. I actually went bike riding. Pity my 80\'s self for all the opportunities lost.

The 90\'s. . .

Oh, the 90\'s.
I don\'t even know where to begin. A Tale of Two Cities comes to mind...

\"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...\"

The information age began with the publicising of the internet. In my opinion, the biggest change to hit the world since Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. We\'re still recovering from the impact, really.
It was also the decade of apathy, of \'self expression\' (which always seemed to manifest as a tongue ring, a nipple ring, a tattoo of a kanji on the shoulder, or earrings in multitudes), of \'political correctness\' as someone mentioned, which got so extreme that it quickly became a joke, and remains so despite some people still trying to cling to it as a necessity.
New bands came, and kept on coming, all starting to sound more and more alike. Grunge was passe before it even spread across the entire nation, and everyone was some sort of elitist. \"Indy music is the only music worth listening to.\" *snort*
Spandex got very popular in there. And far too many women thought it was a right, rather than a privilege. Worse, biker shorts on guys. Nobody wants to see that. Ever.

And this decade...
Well, we\'re all still here, so that\'s something, right?

I almost feel like I should elaborate on my answer now.....

70\'s.......I was a teenager. Had sex for the first of many times. Discovered \"smoke\" (and brownies. Oh wow. Brownies! Haven\'t done that in forever!). Grew up and moved out on my own

80\'S......Moved in with my husband in 1980 and married him in 1983. Tried to get big hair and failed miserably. Lost both my Mom and her Mom to breast cancer in 87 within 6 months of each other and my Dad married his psyco chick wife 1 year to the day later. Had my son in Dec of 89 and it totally changed my life.

90\'s.....Moved to the desert and commuted to LA to work (1.5 hours each way) for 2 years before I was layed off due to a company merger. Stayed at home for 6 years raising the boy. Home schooled him.

00\'s........hmmmm, got the job I have now in 2001. Still home schooled with the help of Mr C (worked opposite shifts). Mr C had a heart attack, found out he had diabetes, started going blind and now we\'re getting divorced.

My Decade? Obviously the \'70\'s. Had the most fun with the least responsibility. But I have a feeling that the next decade will be even better than the 70\'s. We\'ll see. Things are looking up! :D

I have to admitting to living in SIX decades.

50\'s = (tail end I can just remember)
60\'s = School, Scraped knees, Kennedy, Beatles, Stones, Space Race, Apollo moon landings.
70\'s = Exams, Driving Lessons, Starting work, Dating, Marriage etc.
80\'s = Work, Darkness of Thatcherism, Political Activism, 1st Close call with old man wieding scythe, Moving South.
90\'s = Promotions, 2nd & 3rd close calls with old man wielding scythe, Redundancy, job hunting/finding, moving to Bolton.
00\'s = Coolminiornot, Getting older, greyer but no wiser.

There are a few things I would change, but little I regret.

I\'m going for the mid-80\'s through the early 90\'s. I caught the tail-end of some amazing music and all the best toys were floating round too. Things seemed, well, a little bit more \'permanent\' maybe. Things were still independent in the 80\'s. Maybe I\'m just getting old.

While I\'m new to posting the forums (I lurked for about a year), this truly raised an eyebrow. So was it an epic duel or were you stealing cabbages out of Farmer Maggot\'s crop?

:D Not keen on cabbage, unless it\'s pickled.

1st one was a collapse caused by Crohn\'s Disease, blood pressure dropped so low went into cardiac arrest on the operating table.
2nd & 3rd, Serious Gastric Bleeds, last one required 9 units of Blood, and same amount Saline solution putting back into me.

But proves I\'m a Coffin Dodger for real.

I was tempted to say eighties too as it was a good decade to be a certain age, in a lot of ways, but honestly, I\'m enjoying the noughties far too much not to vote for \'em (even if I did lose all my hair) - high-end 3D games, at home, practically for free? Multiplayer Internet gaming, really powerful home and work computing, broadband, CMON and other forums, Google, email, mobile phone and text messaging. All that and all the good music since 1990 that I can listen to any time I want to, on a device that fits in a shirt pocket, that never skips no matter how much you jog it... what\'s not to like?

As for my coffin dodger credentials, when I was a kid I went to hospital so many times over a short period that they said, \"Oh no, not him again.\" or so the family story goes. Hopefully I\'m a good long ways away from meeting my scythe-wielding friend again.

Yes. Ask Vincenti about it, He and his daughters have it. It\'s not a good condition for a child as it affects the bodies ability to absorb nutrients properly. Not good for growing teenagers.

Touching wood, I\'m in a \"remission state\" (*) so haven\'t had any symptoms and live a normal life. (Well as normal as any modeller ever is)

(* According to the Vets that is. Apparently I had it for 20 years before I actually got to see the letter telling me the diagnosis.
Shame is I\'ve had no major symptoms or effects other then a couple of feet of Bowel being taken out, but it\'s seriously buggered up a couple of job applications, because I hadn\'t been told about it and therefore didn\'t declare it and of course the medical checks flagged it up. One very good job missed out on because of it.)

Oh my, I took your description quite literally. Sorry to hear of the condition, but it\'s great everything is okay now. I had this comical image of a younger man being chased by a farmer... (I live around lots and lots of corn by the way)

Yea, my brother and dad both have had parts of intestines removed because of it. I\'ve got it, but not as bad. At this point, for me, the treatment is worse than the disease.
