Actually usually I have the TV on in the background - either the History Channel or Cartoon Network actually - although ocassionally it will be TNT or A&E. And to answer your second question, I dont think it affects my work, it just helps me get into the zone.

90% of the time I listen to Black Metal... the other 10% consists of some metal and rock.

I have never tried working without music, but I am sure it helps me concentrate. At work I also always listen to music...

I usually have TV on in the background, TVLAND, Nick at Nite, History Channel, Gameshow Network, Comedy Central, NBA Playoffs, occasionally a Mariner\'s game. I am usually painting when I tune in for my daily allotted hour of news in the evening.

When there is nothing good on I put in an audio book. I have listened to
\"Dutch\" (Reagan biography)
\"The Universe in a Nutshell\" (Hawking)
and most recently
\"Every Living Thing\" (James Herriot)

Sometimes I listen to talk radio. Glen Beck is my favorite.

I rarely listen to music while painting. I need something more compelling. But when I do listen to music it is usually to break in a new CD.

The only time my work is affected is when I have to leave my seat to change the channel. Where I live, \"Friends\" comes on right after \"King of the Hill\" and \"Simpsons\". So when I hear the hackneyed hip expressions spewing forth(don\'t go there, duh!, uh HELLO-O!), I know it\'s time to change it to the news.

Moody

Really depends on the mood I\'m in. I find for real detailed work, I like to listen to classical music, or mellow like Tangerine Dream or say Holst. If I am in a more upbeat mood, or I want to get a lot done at a faster rate, I tend to like heavier music, like Priest, Iron Maiden or Sepultura. Sometimes I just like theme music, such as Hawkwind\'s Chronicle of the Black Sword. All depends. There is no formula here :D

I too paint with the TV in the background often. Whatever\'s on really. Usually some old reruns since I don\'t have cable so maybe Bonanza or That 70s Show. Just keeps some other part of my brain busy.
If I paint Sunday nights I do it listening to the radio because a local station plays those old 1950s serials - mystery stuff, Lucile Ball before I Love Lucy, Gunsmoke etc. Love that old stuff, even the ridiculous commercials.
I don\'t think at affects my work.

I listen to the radio (I only listen to Talk Sport though as I hate music radio! www.talksport.net), various styles of music (at the moment it\'s The Kills, The Transplants, Aphex Twin, and Johnny Cash), or I might have the TV on (old films and sport are the best things to have on).

Wouldn\'t say that any of that lot affects my work though!

all kinds of noise

For a while there, I put in the CD-Rom for the Warhammer:shadow of the horned rat PC game. If you just \'played\' it through the media player, it was all sound track. Very \"marching of to the beat of war drums\" sounding.

Recently, if not the television, I like to listen to talk radio. I notice that I am not listening very closely, but the incessant droning helps me concentrate.:)

I listen to death metal, black metal, whatever you want to call extreme metal. Only problem is sometimes I get too worked up and have a hard time with brush control! :D

For painting barbarians, Bal-Sagoth sets that epic heroic fantasy atmosphere.

Olov, nice to see someone with similar tastes. Haven\'t heard too much Vintersorg, but I like what I have heard. I also really like his work with Borknagar.

Extreme Metal

Since you got me into Primal Fear, perhaps you should check out some Racer X.... I found there newer album, Technical Difficulties, is really cool, and they do an awesome cover of \"Godzilla\" on their Superheroes album. The older (80\'s) albums are pretty good too, though obviously very 80\'s....

ok, i will check it out, see if i can find an mp3 somewhere.

i was just thinking of you - i brought a nevermore cd to work today and there is a cover of \"love bites\" on it. great stuff. you might also like the band that their singer was in before nevermore, called sanctuary. more thrash, but great stuff. i would say the singer (warrell dane) is halford - influenced.

Catholic tastes or what?

Hey Glyn! I can only approve of the T. Dream/Hawkwind theme.
Personally, I tend to go for hard 70\'s rock type stuff, Zeppelin, Floyd, Sabbath, Yes etc. I am also a huge fan of Doyle Bramhall having seen him with Roger Waters (ex Floyd). He got me into Stevie Ray Vaughn etc. I really go for great female voices. Just love Stevie Nicks but also range as far as Sarah Brightman who does classical stuff. Nickleback have impressed me recently as has the new Christina Aga wotsit album. Red hot Chilli Peppers rock and I can thoroughly recommend Henryk Gorecki, Symphony No 3 if you are feeling suicidal. Really liked Eminem\'s new one as well. Pick the bones out of that lot!:bouncy:

tick...tick.....tick

If I am working at night I listen to the ticking of my egg timer. I have a tendency to lose track of time when I paint and only have a VERY limited amount of painting time (what with 3 kids and all) so I have to set a timer. Other wise I will have the local heavy metal radio station on with the egg timer in the back ground.

I usually listen to German or Russian industrial/techno or one of my hundreds of anime soundtracks (Ghost in the Shell, Neo Ranga, Macross, Evangelion and Rurouni Kenshin among the best).

Hmm I think it keeps me awake and energetic so I don\'t pass out at 3 am.

I have to listen to something mellow and non interrupting... Maybe Spiritualized, Fairport Convention (top band, still going strong and a fekkin great festival :flip: ) John Coltrane is good background too.

Mostly I\'ll just have the window open... birds singing etc lol...
