What do you do when you\'re discouraged?

The question is referring to painting. lets say you look at the work of the top rated artists here or see some outstsanding job in a magazine and you start to think you\'ll never be able to even match these paint jobs or conversions, let alone surpass them, what do you do?

It\'s far more depressing than that...

Start looking at cars/houses etc and you will inevitably find out that yours are crap.
Start looking at any subject and you will soon realise that you haven\'t got the foggiest notion....

But, as the Chinese say, the longest journey always begins with the first step.

I paint then use carb cleaner(it rips the paint right off) then repaint then use carb cleaner then I get less picky or high from the fumes and could care less.
Oh to be human.

Well, there is always going to be someone better then you. What I always do is paint to do better for myself. Like joging or swimming it is more about the personal journey then how far someone else has traveled.

So why do you paint? to paint like so-and-so... That isn\'t worth your time!

What YOU have to ask yourself is whether or not you are improving for you. It is good to have someone better then you. It gives you something to strive for.

Life has little purpose but what it has instead is alot of is struggle. Be the man or woman who struggles to succede and you will find that your life has purpose. Be the man or woman who faulters at the sign of struggle and you will be the person who has no purpose.

I hope this helps. I know it helped me jump clear out of my depression and I am now a sucess in school and many other things.

It helps me not to compete to be better than others, but to just try and be better than my last mini. Compete with yourself.

Walk before you can run type of thing...

But, still, I know the feeling when you look at someones work like Arjay or Cyril.....:flame:lol

when I get discouraged, I take a break and go do something else..I have so many other hobbies and interested that helps settle my mind.

also I tell myself this........\"someone is always going to be better at it then me, but also someone is worse then me\"...I’m in the middle, a good place.lol

Getting away from the hobby (as a few have mentioned)is an excellent point to. Shortly, you\'ll begin to realize why you enjoy it after all, and come back refreshed.

The only way is to make yourself pick up that brush and paint, paint, paint. Throught hard work and persistance you will improve and reach your goals at painting.

Yeah, I echo the advice already given about the ills of comparison. Comparison of one\'s self to an other seems to breed either arrogance or self pity. What I mean is, you either give yourself an ego boost or an ego beating, but forget all that: the ego does not need any sort of feeding! Paint with Zen mind; i.e., focus on what are you doing right then and there (\"be here now\", as some \"guru\" might say). To me, this is the true joy of painting: a focus so sharp that everything else is not present--the mind and body quiet as mini, brush, paint and self become one fluid entity.

Try talking (PM\'ing) to someone who\'s work you like. 9 out of 10 times they\'ll talk back and give you suggestions or advice.
But my personal Advice, never get discouraged about your painting, just look at some of your earlier pieces, if you see that there\'s a difference then hey, you\'re on the right road.

And if you ever think that other painters don\'t \"Fluff\" one up every so often, think again. How do you think I found out about using Dettol as a paintstripper? lol

I don\'t know, i\'ve been suffering from that for a while now. Not as much as i can never be like that type thing, but more a \'why do i bother\' type feeling in respects to never being content with my own work. it\'s ups and downs with me, at the moment i\'m riding the \'forced painting, atleast i\'m getting something done\' downspiraled wave. it\'s not a good place to be, but I\'ve found that it clears after a while and i get back enjoying painting again, normally this hapopens when i do something i\'m pleased with, or if I finished an important comission.
painter\'s block comes to us all, and the best way i\'ve found to deal with it is to force yourself to paint, sometimes this \'discouraged\' feeling comes right before you get a spurt of heavenly inspiration too. i\'ve had times like I\'m having now where I hated everything I painted, and at a certain point, all of a sudden my painting was better than before. I don\'t know what happened, but it was like reaching a newlevel in a computer game....hope I do soon...

If I got depressed every time I saw a mini that looked better than mine you could always find me crying in the corner
I found out it\'s quite easy not to get discouraged: I just accept that my miniatures look as if a three year old has painted them and continue. Hey, if I suck, I could at least suck constantly. That way you also fell a hell of a lot better if you produce a really good-looking mini. Of course that has never happened to me so I can\'t really talk, but that\'s the theory :moon:
Also, I kill people. Painkiller is worth it\'s size in gold (how much would 700MB gold be by the way?)

Practice, practice and practice even more

And have the guts to try out new techniques and tools.

You don\'t \"kill\" people in Painkiller. You spend hours upon hours searching for the perfect way to nail a zombie to a ledge and have him dangling over the edge. It\'s an art form of its own right.
That stake-gun is just the best thing that ever was invented since sliced bread.

Oh, and when I\'m discouraged, I stop painting and wait for enthusiasm to come back. Takes a while, though .

Take some down time - go fishing. Or if the weather doesn\'t cooperate - tie flies for fishing. Done at the same table, so if you see any feathers in my work you know why.

well, if we are getting into budhism..(hindu has gurus not budhist) It would be that your paint just is. I wouldn\'t be bad or good. You would however paint because you are capable and if you didn\'t paint the mini but instead ignored it it wouldn\'t matter because minis do not have karma... unless you are a japanese budhist who mixed shinto beliefs in then you beleve everything has a karma.

Of course if we are going that way.. stick wth the six cannons and remember that you must paint the mini like...wait a minute noone\'s ancestors painted minis

I think when you\'re looking at other peoples mini\'s you can\'t get depressed by their talent you have to strive to do as well if not better than them.
