What do you look for in a sculpt?

From a painter\'s point of view, there are two important things IMO: the pose and the face.

Your mini has a very good pose, but I think the face needs a lot more work.

what do I look for in a sculpt....

Usually metal, but sometimes plastic or even resin....lollollol

I like sculpts with character, dynamic poses, and lots of detail.

Yeah, this is just my first sculpt... hopefully i\'ll improve in the face department. i used a GW model for my basic proportions and they seem off. Is that just the look of a mini (to seem shorter than they should) or did i just use a poor model as a standard? True, the face is bad... i know that. As my first attempt (and i\'m still learning) i like it though. They\'ll get better. You guys liked the pose rather than something more static?

To sum up;
1) work on my faces
2) keep the poses \"active\"
anything else? Do you prefere females over males? Taller over stouter? ect...
Thanks again:D

Agree that the face looks like it needs some touching up. The pic is really a bit too dark to say a whole lot.

I also realize the guns are part of the deal on this guy, but in future...more realistically scaled weapons, perhaps. :)

I personally prefer sculpts where the face is clear of any obstruction - minis where the face is partially blocked by hands or weapons irk me (probably cause I can\'t manage to get my brush in to the eyes and so forth). Not too much fiddly detail is also good in my book - simplicity speaks volumes.

looks pretty good to me for a first sculpt. I\'m currently about halfway through my first full sculpt, but I\'ve got stuck on the hands and head/face (I reckon I can do the hands, but the face I know I\'m gonna mess up, I might have to cheat nd use an existing head....

No fiddily bits. As in no areas it is near impossible to get a brush into.

I personally like minis with cloak or long coats as I am pretty good at painting them and they tend to look good.

Also, a mini with a good back... too many companies spend too much time working on all the little details on the front of a mini, but then doing nothing on the back... and when playing my army most of the time I\'m looking at their backs.

I especially like figures who aren\'t too muscular, you know the double Arnold type.
And the face of course is the most important part. If the face is bad forget it, I don\'t want to have it, simple as that.

Thanks everybody!

Definitly good feedback to help me know what to practice.
Trevor: As for the head... i did just the face as a mask, then made a blank head and green stuffed the face to the blank head, added ears and hair and green stuffed in onto his shoulders (about a week in all).
I started with a flat fairly thin sheet of green stuff and with a toothpick (only tool i use... i\'m kind of poor) dug in the lines that make up the eyes and the lines that go to either side of his mouth. At this time i also built up the checks. Let that dry (come back later that night if you did this before work, or do it in the morning before work if you did it at night) and put on a nose and mouth (two little \"logs\" of green stuff in whatever shape you want and us the toothpick to make the lip shape). Let that dry and make a basic head shape (minuse the front of the head... you\'ll add that with your new face mask and extra green stuff to hold it on). When both of those are dry green stuff them together and try to smooth out the line between the mask and the head. Let that dry. Put on ear (keep in mind if it\'s an alien, elf, human... whatever). Let that dry and finally do any hair/hat. When i made the blank head i put a piece of wire in the bottom and put the other end of the wire into a small piece of wood to both hold it up while i worked on it (hands free so you\'re less likely to smoosh something) and give it something to keep it clean and from rolling off my desk onto the floor (lost countless little bits to the vacume by loosing them in the rug:(). That\'s how i did it and i believe with a little practice/work they\'ll look good. Hope this helps.:)
