What do you think of this idea

right, so, just about 10 mins ago a new item just added its self to obscenely long list of \" oh i have to do that\"s. its an idea for a fairly large piece of diorama. it cenetrs around a drop pod, with marines arrayed around it. howver, the marines are not fighting, they are bemused. a sergeant cheks a auspex, the others pca e and train their bolters on fleeting images. an apothecary, shoulder lamp on, examies a guard corspe on the floor. the are around them is wooded, and in the woodland are a concealed gropu of either night lords or guerrila fighters, probably night lords, as i dont reckon that marines would be outwitted by puny humans.

the general idea is as folows: a chapter has luyanched midnight, drop pod landing on a rengade held world. howvere, on landing, they find nothing a side form their fallen comrades. unbeknowst to them, their enemies hide in the surroundings, waiting for the moment to strike.

i really wan to convey a lot of atmosphere and tension here, but mainly show some of the real terror andtrilas marines would go through, rather than showing them as faceless boltgun jockeys.

what do you think? good idea or a travesty under the emperor\'s sun?

think its a great idea but i think you would have to enclose the diorama to simulate the night and maybe veiw through a spy hole. that way you could crate the moonlite with a well positioned mini-lite.
Just an idea that i had awile ago for a project.

Sounds like a really cool idea, I love it when people think outside the box like this-instead of the marines being shown as fearless heroes you put them in a different scenario.
I like the idea of some kind of guerilla fighters better than nightlords, but i think an unseen enemy would be the best.

You could have trees surrounding the marines.

i dont think surrounding them with trees will create enough atmosphere, if its enclosed you get the antisipation of wanting to know wats going on.

The apprehension is going to be very hard to pull off. Doing all the figures in a more monochrome color scheme, except where they\'re hit by a light source, might work rather than trying to enclose the diorama. You\'re really going to need something to pull the viewer into the fear.

For example, maybe a group of three are standing around a fallen comrade, who\'s been torn limb from limb, in the snow, with no tracks around. You could have the leadership shown in an angry near panic trying to direct a line of fire off to the distance. Meanwhile, on the other side of the pod, a tentacle is coming out of the snow and wrapping around another lone marine\'s leg.

Gotta be able to tell the story without a single word written. That\'s why I think your first cut needs work. But, it\'ll be a nice piece if you pull it off.

wasnt really thinking of enclosing it, but doing them as raven guard with night like osl as seen in shaun rl tutorial. i chose raven guard cos i wanted the 2 masters of fearon both side facing off, and they have a helluva lot of drop pods. i might do demons coming out of the trees, rocks or ground or nothing at all. still havent decided yet. i really want to think of what inspires true fear, not gribblys or orks, but the unkown, when you dont know whats hunting you, your imagination immediatly replaces it with your personal terror.i may even do something different hunting each differnt marine, to show their \"personal terror\"

Good idea and I can picture it in my head.

But I think it\'d be very hard to pull off. The diorama would be mostly black with the odd spot of dulled colour.

Any nightlords waiting in the woods would have to be jet black as it\'s night and in shadow.

Prehaps change the timing slightly, rather than a midnight attack how about a dawn attack. This way you can add colour but mute it down, and could still make use of the Lighting effects of the medic\'s lamp.

What I would do then is enclose it in a clear case, but maybe have a dawn backdrop (just begining to sunrise) to the rear to add atmosphere.

Maybe adding some creepy shadows in instead of people in the woods would be more atmospheric. Especially if the lights from the pod camp were casting strong shadows from the marines as well. Then you\'d have a hidden enemy.
Sounds like a good idea - you just have to start it now!

The \'problem\' that I have with you idea is that marines are scared of maybe two things. One failing their mission (the Emperor), and two failing their Brothers (the Chapter).
I can not see a Marine pacing around a drop pod. They would clear the area as soon as they hit the ground. Remember the entry of the pod just screamed to the world \"Here we are, come and shot us!\" The idea is hit the ground and move to a position away from the insertion point and get your position/ headings etc.
Three, the best time for a attack is around 5 am ish. Or so we were told in the field, so everyone was up and in their foxhole for 20 minutes or so at that time :p

Please mind that I\'m not trying to rip your idea, I like the sound of it, and if executed right will looking most excellent.
How\'s this sound combat squad on patrol in woods at night. and the bad guys are hiding in plain site, say like the Arnold in \"Predator\" That way you could have the apex showing that something \'funny\' and you could do the light thing with a bad guy in the light but his camo is so good that the Marine can\'t see him.

Just MTC,
Brian

i may replace the drop pod with a chaotic shrine, to keep a strong central object.might have the corpses as those of marines, and have the enemie as demons coming out the ground trees and rocks, unbeknownst to the marines. ive been reading horus heresy, and it turns out marines do experience fear, they have just been trained to control it. but then again if you 10feet tall and cased it 4 inch thickdeath armour with a rapid fire rocket launcher in your hands, not much is going to spook you:)

I think the chaotic shrine might do better. You could have a Stonehenge-like thing going on, with all the demonic faces pointed away from the center, so the marines don\'t really see them, just the dismembered SM in the middle. You could do lots of little hidey things as well, like under little crevices, and that would add a lot to the atmosphere.

Maybe a poor choice of words? Bemused is what you would be if you were being attacked by squirels thowing acorns.

Fleeting images and dead comrads while securing a drop zone do not lead to \"bemused\".

I like the idea. Keep the Drop Pod and the trees and everything. If you want the atmosphere to be suspenseful, try a fog machine and have your light on top of the scene. The light and fog will make it look moon-lit and the fog will give it the suspense needed. As for the fighter, try a Tyranid Ravener in the wood, barely visible.
I hope this helped.
