What do you use to thin your paint?

It\'s good to hear how much you mix it in. I use Vallejo\'s Dilutant thinner which is mixed in a bottle already.

Magic wash

I use a 3:1 of water to Future Floor wax and I love it! I started using it on my ogres and have noticed a huge difference in my blending results. My scores have improved as well!:)

Depending on the effect I am going for I will thin my paint with water, acrylic thinner, or ink. To my stand water I always add a few drops of Liquitex flow-aid as well.

Depends on the use. For standard basecoating, I use a 2:1 (or 3:1 with Citadel paint) water to paint. For highlighting, it\'s typically a litle more dilute, 4:1. I don\'t use the floor wax concoction except for darklining or washing. I have used Winsor and Newton watercolor retarder and have a tube of acrylic retarder I haven\'t ever used. I have also used Liquitex matte acrylic medium, which is particularly good for taking the shine out of inks. However, since I always coat with dullcote, shine isn\'t typically a problem.

Personally I use water, but I\'m just starting to try and blend so that is subject to change :).

Who would use acetone to dilute paint?? It will eat away at the paint brush, if it is a plastic model too much acetone will destroy it, and acetone will take off previos paint if it touchs it.

acetone

acetone was mentioned in one of my other threads. the one on blending - pro\'s tell your secrets. someone uses acetone for wetblending.

I use water, and as a little \"kick\" for the blending medium I have been known to use K-Y Jelly. Here is a figure that popped up in a forum discussion a few months back -

I know it sounds like a surreal medium, but it\'s really worth a try because the results are quite good, especially with wet blending (my preferred technique over layering).

It seems you really like to post polls :p
So far I\'ve only been using water, I might try a diluting agent one day, does it make a significant diference???

On the palette I use the FFF/water mix that\'s so common.

In the pots (since they are always too thick from the store) I use water.

In both cases I use distilled water which is not free, but at .99 per gallon may as well be. (p.s. it\'s the best stuff to use in your iron so I have it around anyway)

I also use 3:1 water/future floor wax mix. I have noticed a huge difference in the way the paint goes on as opposed to just water, although my SO thinks I\'m just crazy. The thing that worries me is that there\'s a big warning label on the FFW about not consuming it.. and sometimes my head gets a little achey (and my mouth tastes funny) after I\'ve been painting for a while... but I figure I\'m only swallowing trace amounts and it\'s probably all in my head anyway. :D

dilute paint

I use water. I\'ve purchased flow-aid and retarder from liquitex (see dnagrimes\' article on wet pallettes and magick wash) but have yet to try them out. I\'ll post again after I do.

Water...unless...

I only use water and from a used Vallejo drip bottle. That\'s to enable me to measure out as accurately as possible thining ratio.

Otherwise for washes, it\'s water plus ... mild dishwasher. It really (I used it and it works) cause the diluted paint to flow easily into the recesses of the minis and somehow it left a nice \"smear\" over the rest of the raised areas. Then when you highlight, through layering, it comes out really well.

I use filtered water, a bit of flow enhancer (Liquitex) and some acrylic retarder (Liquitex slo-dry)

ya. polls help me figure out what the majority of people do. :)

I used distilled water and the dilutant. I would say that the water thins out the paint alot more than the Vallejo dilutant. the dilutant also lasts a long time. I am still uncertain whether the dilutant is better since I\'m using Vallejo paints, the paint still applies well to the surface with water too. but it definately goes on good with the dilutant. I know with citadels that my paint use to bead up and not stick good.
