What does RaF stand for?

RaF is \"Rank and File\" It\'s the standard that you\'ll see around 5, because usually it\'s only done with drybrushing. Rank and file minis are not the best simply because you\'re going to paint fifty gobbos, and no one wil notice that one in the back row doesn\'t have his toenails painted....
Ahh, RaF, AKA: The reason good painters never finish their armies.
I could never leave a miniature\'s toenails unpainted in 25mm scale and call it finished.
I\'m training hard though. I said good painter, but it also includes potential good painters, like me, who are still developing their techniques and practicing.
Maybe I should just admit it to myself and say \"Anal Painters\"
I won\'t put a crappy job on a mini if I can help it, I won\'t play with unpainted minis.
I don\'t play much.

Coyote, I totally agree! I\'ll never be a war gamer simply because I am much too \"dedicated\" (aka anal retentive) to painting each and every figure to the best of my (admittedly mediocre) abilities. Also, large numbers (>2) of identical mini\'s bore me. I feel like each little guy should be an individual, even if they\'re just snotling cannon-fodder. So no RaF standard for me. It\'s toenail-painting all the way!

I know the feeling...
Usually I spend way too much time on my rank and file, though I do have a couple armies... which took forever to do...
I think the only ones I broke those rules were the CAVs,, they needed to be done yesterday for demos

Believe me, I know the feeling...
I\'ve been playing Aurora Chapter Space Marines since December of 1996 and have only fielded a fully painted army once since the release of third edition WH40K...
Why? Because every single model has hand-painted squad insignias and chapter badges. My Rhino alone took in the neighborhood of 20 hours of work. My current project, a Force Commander, is in its seventh version, and has around 12 hours of conversion and putty work in it, and around 5 hours of painting time (and it\'s not even half finished yet). Ugh. Now I hope that you all don\'t feel so bad about painting to RaF.
Honestly, if you can paint a squad in a week to any standard, I envy you.

You mean, people don\'t paint insignia on Marines if no transfers are available?
I just can\'t imagine that. Now, I do have an Anghor Prok miniature sans toenails, but that\'s because I just got sick of painting him, wanted to paint something else, and decided to leave it.
I think he will end up in a vat of pinesol anyways.

Please dont drybrush......not even rank and file(unless lots of chainmail). i cant paint that way, i used to work for GW, here in the uk, and for games day etc they send loads of figures to the stores to be painted and taken to play the major battles......shop managers say paint em quick....i just cant do it, all models get painted individually, yes im an anal painter too:~(

I also can not paint on an Raf standard. I tried to paint some Wood Elves once on that standard, but i felt like throwing away the miniatures after I was done. Can anyone imagine a Wood Elve army painted on a Raf standard? I can\'t. But I am sure there are ways of painting miniatures fast and nice looking. Look at Matt Hutsons (warhammer players should know him) models for instance they look cool and didn\'t take long to paint.
