what I did before I started painting minis

Before I started mini painting (about 1.5 years ago now) I was really into military modelling. I specialized myself in 1/72 scale German WW2 armour, and other vehicles. I painted them using enamel paints.

Thought it would be fun to upload my pics to CMON. To be honest, I find it very difficult to put a vote on these models, because they are so totally different from fantasy miniatures. Military modellers strive for realism, not originality or something (that\'s why I find fantasy and SF models so much more fun ). Here are the first two, expect more in the next couple of days

I also spent much of my youth modeling armour (yep, German). I started with 1/35 but found that I never finished projects so I switched over to 1/72. I really became fond of the SdKfz251 armoured troop carrier (built quite a few at 1/72).
I stopped modeling during school and picked it back up fairly recently...dabbled in Anime, \"Gundam-esq\" robots, Napoleonic and US Civil War figures, and now GW Orks.
Too many interests = too many reference books

Corvus - They\'re good tight paint jobs - A little dirtier than I would paint but other than that they\'re good - course I specialize in US WWII, so I start with a darker base coat than the Panzer Yellow you did.

Hey, Me too!. As a matter of fact, my first ever model was a WWII german Tiger tank, back when I was 6, IIRC. Later on, I kinda did general modelling stuff, planes, the odd figure, mechs and Star Wars stuff.

Don\'t remember exactly but I think I think I painted the cammo as normal, and then drybrushed the white winter cammo over it...

On man, I was in Military modelling for a long time as well I painted 1/35, Revell, Tamya etc, then I began painting figures rather than tanks - eves two from Verlinden! Than I realized GW mini were the same in price as resin WWII ones but as Corvus said they (minis) allow more creativity, I was just fed up with painting SS camo uniforms; last thing I began was a Sturmtiger with Photo-etched parts, they´re a pain, so i quit and turned to minis at last!lol

Yup, me too. Military miniatures were my first interest. I was into the 1\\35 scale, but even then it was not the vehicles but the soldiers that grabbed my attention.

I had a set of German Soldiers that I must have painted 5-6 times. Each layer over the last.

I didn\'t know too much about the uniform color schemes, so I just copied what I saw from either movies or reruns of \'Hogan\'s Heroes\".

I never quite had the patience to put a tank together, although I had tried several times. The figures were just so cool, and I really just wanted to make neat little battle scene dioramas (i still do!!)

Once I saw my first fantasy lead miniature, military figures have taken a back, back seat.

God, long story but as others are unburdening...

My first ever interest in toys was in Airfix kits, I was so young, my dad had to assemble them for me. Must have really pissed him off. That would have been at the age of about 8, 36 years ago.

Interest continued and my skills developed slightly, by the time I was 14 I was assembling models and painting them for my local model shop. Never got any money but I had unlimited access to models and paints (enamels). This was still in the early 70s.

Got a very small rep locally for painting figues and vehicles, purely out of the one model shop. Lost interest totally when I started to gain a slightly larger rep and the \'fluff police\' moved in. Clincher was being told that the mud on one of my vehicles was the wrong colour.

Picked up mini modelling 20 years later. Never really lost the hobby however, \'cos I had been through all sorts of related interests, such as custom spraying motorbikes, radio controlled boats, planes and cars etc etc.

I love minis but I am not skilled at painting that small and would rate myself 5-6 in that area. I do have an extensive knowledge of the hobby however, as I guess my interest must actually predate both GW and Citadel.

I guess that at the moment I could only really be categorised as a collector and enthusiast, but when I eventually get settled, I will post my pathetic efforts on the site for your collective derision. Or, then again I might not. Either way, you will not be missing anything.

I cannot remember a time when \'mini\' things were not a part of my life. There has been many years of ebbing and flowing, but it has always been there.

I remember a Rocket with astronauts my dad put together when I was about 4, and RC cars, planes, boats, etc. have always been around.

I\'ve never, ever been into models. For my 9 birthday I got a harrier jet from my uncle, and well....... many tears, dirty words (I was a literate 9 year old) and many fingers/limbs glued together later, I took a hammer and smashed the living hell out of the %@#$ thing! That had to be the most satisfying act of destruction in my life. Actually, after that, I don\'t know how I got into mini\'s. I\'ve gotta say, though, that I have thousands of dollars worth of LEGO, so that might have somethin\' to do with it.......

aaaaaaaah Airfix . . . My best friend as a kid was from England and brought over all kinds of stuff. I remember in 2nd grade (1975?76?) he brought to school a handful of Airfix 8th Army in HO scale - by todays standards they are pretty much crap but back then they were so cool . . .
Prolly a year later I bought Airfix Prussian Landwehr for Waterloo in HO and really stuck with that scale until I discovered the lead.

But I don\'t ever really remember not being into minis or miniature gaming of some kind - esp Historical stuff. In 4th and 5th grade I did the Fantasy thing for a while as D&D took off but then Empire Napoleonettes came along, Essex ACW, then Old Glory - all in 15\'s. . It\'s actually been only two years since I got into 25mm Fantasy stuff again but as most of you know I usually post oddball Eureka junk anyway!

I watched my husband paint them. Then when 3rd edition came out, I didn\'t want to put an unpainted mini on the table, so I painted one, and I was hooked. BTW, I have recently stripped down some of my first paint jobs, but I took \"before\" pics of them. I hope to put them on here as \"Before and After\" photos, and after repainting the first mini, I was shocked! What improvement in 4 years time. I can\'t wait to borrow that camera.....

As far as alternate words for \"stuff\", I would suggest \"thinger.\" It worked in another thread.lollol

The Fleet

man before i got into 40k i did a couple of cars, and then i got the USS Yorktown, and I started assembling a pacific fleet, man was that fantastic, they look awesome, i find it odd but i swore by testors then. The most fun though had to be the Bismarck, german naval camoflage is excellent and a challenge to paint correctly when you are a 14 year old (7 years ago). But normal modeling has its place, before I did my first 40k vehicle, I painted up a WWII zero fighter using citadel paints and more 40kish technique, and i plan to \'practice\' like this some more. History is awesome afterall.

thinger can be used for thingering all thingers of thinger

I\'ve thought about doing some historical tank stuff, but I\'m scared away by the thought of learning to use airbrushes and learning all the complicated techniques to it.

I got my start in military modeling as well. I also was heavily into WWII arms and armour. I built most of the old Monogram tanks (American, German and Russian), most of the WWII fighter planes, and a ton of ships. Enjoyed seeing your pictures. I even remember these Matchbox models. I had a couple of them too, not sure if I still do or not. Look forward to seeing some more of your posts.

I started with airfix models too!! I had quite a few of them, but my personal favorites were a harrier jump jet and a Sunderland airboat.

I also had the Enterprise D and a Klingon Bird of Prey.
