What is basing miniatures?

It is the process of creating the base you put your miniature on. Even though the slot is covered, the insert the miniature comes with can be easily cut off, and the miniature then just glued to the base or even pinned.

Well, there is nothing that says you have to have a slot in a base. You can place plastic figs on it, they don't have them at all. Or if you have metal figs, just clip the 'tab' off, and use the fig on that.
Now, these bases seem more than a bit over-done, but they're all good ideas of something to do. The sand-based ones I would work around the fig, rather than fill the base and place the fig on top,
but other than that, all very nice. And certainly EXCELLENT for markers and the like.

There are ways around that - you cover the slot on the base, clip the insert from the mini then, using a pin vise drill a hole in the mini and the base for pins to pin the mini to the base.

The main thing I do differently from the article writer is I use Squadron Putty to fill the slot.

Metal minis I do differently entirely.

Have a read through some more articles that catch your eye while you are there, you'll probably find they will answer most of your questions before you've thought to ask them
