what is best: warhammer 40k, warhammer or LOTR

As far as the games go, so much depends on the other players. Both Warhammers have too many rules issues and LOTR seems weak. To me, the closer a game system resembles the computer game Starcraft, ( where balanced game play is king) ( ie Chess in sheep\'s clothing albeit very cool clothing)) the more fun it is, and right now, Warmachine is still pretty balanced ( Hordes may improve it or not) GW\'s games seem to be about selling more models ( last year Tyranids were on top, then Marines, and now Tau are up, and Eldar are next.

I must say, that Dan Abnett\'s books keep making me want to play 40k and not even Tolkien\'s books make me want to play LOTR.

Having only played Epic, I have no basis for comparison.

Having said that from my perspective and the armies involved - WFB.

From a game play standpoint? SWORD AND THE FLAME or JOHNNY REB.

And once I get the mechanics worked out it\'ll be English Colonial troops vs Orks.

I was thinking more what effect will a short chamber Boxer Henry point 45 caliber miracle have on the dreaded Greenies?

Whether you like the game or not you really cant walk past a table full of ranked minis that are well painted (At least 5\'s anyway). Thats why I play warhammer. I dont care if the rules suck I just love the game and the imagery.

But if I was to vote for an alt Id say fantasy warriors.

I think it might make an impact.

Hmm i like 40k the most. Why?

Because: All that matters in fantasy is you deployment and movement gets SO cramped.

LOTR: Not even gonna comment thet one..

40K: I like to think that its more dynamic, altough some of the rules are a little..hmm.. Wierd!

I\'ve played all three rather a lot. here\'s my views

LotR - I love it, I would ask everyone who cricticizes it to play a few games of it with an experienced opponent. In terms of game flow and flexibility I would say it is GW\'s best system. Every model fights and moves as an individual, yet with teh few extra changes that they put in for spears, firing through friendly models in base contact etc, unit based tactics become effective, without being unwieldy

40k - This comes next on my list. Probably the most important thing here for me is the background. GW have created a really rich universe and timeline here. One that doesn\'t rely heavily on other established traditions in the way Warhammer does. I know a lot of people view the more recent editions as dumbing down the game. I would say that it allows larger games to be possible in a reasobale time frame and makes the game rules more appropriate for the unit based approach.

Warhammer - I used to play this one hell of a lot. However, as I have played more of the above tow, I have played FB much less. When I do, I find myself frustrated by the almost \'clunkiness\' of it. Maybe I\'ve just got myself into a different mindset. It just seems daft that unit x can\'t charge unit y because they\'re 1\" outside of their front arc of view. I wouldn\'t be against a full rewrite of the Warhammer rules, even (shock horror) moving to round bases

My two pence

fantasy

better use of tactics, more diverse armies (as opposed to 18000 variations of space marines with a few different rules).

i\'m just saying i have to go with warhammer all the way, though some of the 40k stuff is good to paint(like tau). LOTR is just stupid. :|~

Wow I am really supprised by how well fantasy is doing. Looking at the site and all the comments and discussions, I figured that 40K would win this by a landslide.

I miss the old WFB days when you could use things like the Tortois Shell manouver and your musicians were actually used to make manourver rolls.

That really doesn\'t supprise me.

I received LotR for Xmas the year it came out and with it a set of fellowship minis. I played a handful of games with the minis that came with it and never even opened up the fellowship box.

As I am a collector at heart (way way way too many unpainted minis, and way way way to many games I played less then a handful of times), I went on to pick up the second game rulebook, it hopes that the rules had improved. I found they did not. They just seemed over simplified and even more random then Warhammer or 40K (the one thing I hate is the randomness in all GW games).

Perhaps since they have put out (what a dozen?) new rules since then, the game may be improved. But this is one I expect to sit on my shelf gathering dust for quite some time.
