What is the best way to paint robes??

I have tried and tried to paint robes on Dark Angel minis but the results I get look okay but it is a far cry from the smooth robes I\'ve seen many painters paint. Can someone please help me??

can you post a pic for us in the forum here so we can take a look at what you\'ve done so far? It\'s hard to tell you what to do unless we can see what you\'re working with . . .

Don\'t drybrush highlights, for starters. The best way to highlight smooth surfaces like cloth, armour etc. is \"layering\" thin washes of successively lighter colour on the high points. If you already knew this, please ignore the rest of my post...

Layering is how all the really good painters here get those amazingly real-looking highlights, with a smooth gradient between dark and light. It\'s not easy, and personally I suck at it, largely because I don\'t have the patience to do very many almost-invisible washes and so my colour transitions are too abrupt :(. It\'s tough to get the paint consistency just right, people say it should be \"like milk\", which I suppose means not completely watery but not thick and gloopy either. I think that\'s just something you have to figure out yourself by doing it. But it\'s one of the things that makes the difference between 5.0 \"tabletop\" quality minis and true display pieces.

Try to water down your paints. A lot. Depending on your base coat/undercoat, you\'ll find it to leave almost no colour on the mini, but several layers will produce a great effect.

Or, if you\'r feeling cool , you could have a look at the article on Blending in the Articles section.

Best of luck!

for cream or light brown robes i usually use wet/wet blending or layering. Start with a medium cream with a bit of a chocalate brown in it, make sure it is smooth. Then add more chocalate brown and a bit of black (very little). Anyways water this down with an extender if you are going to wet blend and mix the highlight. Anyways I paint the dark into the deeper crevaces. for the highlight I just use the cream colour watered down with extender, and then a final highlight of medium cream and white (or a light bluish/purple colour I bought along time ago made by Delta Ceramacoat called violet ice, which btw is good for lightening flesh and blues). If you dont know how to blend just use layering.
