What makes people creative?

I was asked the question today \"What make people creative?\" I couldnt really come up with much more than a good imagination and space for improvement. But saying as most people on here are \'creative artists\', what do you people think?

Genetics and the environment.:D

Seriously though, creativity and appreciation of beauty or aesthetics are not well understood. Clearly it has something to do with how the brain is wired, and most of the limited information out there suggests that the right side of the brain is more important for such things, although there are exceptions.

What is Creativity... ? That is the question, and the answer isn\'t one sided... more like 60 sided, at least from what Wikipedia tells us.

Just a little quote from the page;

\"Perhaps the most widespread conception of creativity in the scholarly literature is that creativity is manifested in the production of a creative work (for example, a new work of art or a scientific hypothesis) that is both novel and useful. Colloquial definitions of creativity are typically descriptive of activity that results in producing or bringing about something partly or wholly new; in investing an existing object with new properties or characteristics; in imagining new possibilities that were not conceived of before; and in seeing or performing something in a manner different from what was thought possible or normal previously.\"

And that is, maybe in less words, I would describe creativity.. New things, never seen before or old things done in new ways.

According to Terry Pratchett, idea particles are floating around the universe all the time and we just sometimes get in the way of one and it lodges in our brains.

I\'m inspired by everyday life and the juxtaposition of these fantasy and SF warriors - hence my \"modern\" takes on several minis.

What makes people creative.. Probably some of the same brain wiring that makes people eccentric or manic or obsessive or any of the other labels people get when being different. Creative folks seem to share some of those traits, or get labeled with them.

Maybe when doctors eventually perfect the drugs for \"fixing\" that brain wiring there will be some interesting consequences, like creative homogenization.

Not entirely sure.

Neither of my parents were/are creative, however both my grandfathers were skilled woodworkers, my maternal Grandmother was a Seamstress and skilled dress maker.
My paternal grandfather was also a skilled Blacksmith and created many designs for HuWood\'s (A Mining engineering firm based in Gateshead) from which they gained numerous patents.

My love of art and artistry, seems to be a bit of an aberration in the family. (However my Maternal side is supposed to be decended from Thomas Bewick the engraver, which could explain it). (*)

I do know however that my love of reading and my voracious appetite for books is a family trait. Both Grandfathers, My Great-Grandfather Dodds, my Grandmother Dodds (and all her side of the Family {Teachers}) had the love of the written word instilled via the Mining Social and Temperance leagues. That carried on through the family, with my Father, Uncle and Aunt and now my cousins and myself.

(*)Either that or those Kidney Beans I ate in the 70\'s have finally caught up with me. :D

I really can\'t say what get\'s my creative juices flowing. Ideas seem to pop up in my head of their own accord, or at least it\'s seldom obvious to me what sparked them, if indeed there was some external stimuli involved.

To quote HUnter S Thompson: \"I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they\'ve always worked for me.\" ;)
Maybe minus the violence part, I guess. :)

I know what makes me creative, NEED

A need to be good at something, to better myself, why? because I seem to need to be praised for my good work.:D why? so I feel loved and valued :D Also a need to express my understanding of this world.

Edit; To express ones emotions with creating things, not destroying things

What makes people creative?

Children.

We have to stay at least a step ahead of them, or all is lost....

Why is the sky blue?
Why did Aladdin just do that?
Where\'s Bambi\'s mom?
Why are slugs slimy?
Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?

What makes people creative? Seriously?

I think I like krom\'s answer best.
Need.
Humanity needs a drug to cure a disease.
Thanks, Mr. Salk.
Humanity needs a faster way to travel.
Thanks, Wright Brothers.
Or Mr. Ford.
Or whoever decided to tame the first horses for riding.
Humanity (or cromagnonity?) needed food because the mammoth got away...
Thank you brave shaman (or whoever) who started taste-testing plants...

Be it art, or science, or any of the many things in between, there is a need in us all to do something a little bit (or a lot) differently.

How can I be different?

I dream vividly in color. If anyone ever invents a way to record dream content, I could give Peter Jackson or George Lucas a run for their money. My dreams are fantastic! And that doesn\'t even include the \"adults only\" ones!

I think creativity involves not only the desire to create something that the artist and others can admire, but motivation and skill to bring that idea to life. Many people have great ideas, but few bring them to fruition.

Pretty damn close to the truth there, Krom. Excellent reply. The drugs, alcohol and insanity part I cited came after that other stuff you mentioned FAILED :D
