What makes people creative?

Well, excessive quantities of alcohol always do it for me, \'course results vary, what often seemed like a blinding flash of shear genius at the time can seem like a pile of shite the next day.
In general I\'m more creative when I\'m abit down, when on the upwards curve I quite often don\'t feel the need, or results are kinda half hearted. This would apply more to work on canvas than mini\'s.
Creativity in any of its forms is another form of language/expression, the same can be said of destruction. What\'s interesting is that creativity in it\'s freest form is free of the constraints of languge, by which I mean linguistics., Art, music an all have their own defined languages, when you step out side them, your innovating, or expanding that language. However go to far and know one can understand what is you want to express. babble babble.
Ever thought how language limits the abilty to plastisize thought, can you think beyond the limits of your language, hence arts fill that gap.
Go create

lol dauber22, I tried the drugs alchohol etc first, found it didn\'t work, then tried all the things I loved without them. Mind you I do seem to do things back to front.

I think being honest with ourselves, for good or bad, and becoming aware of this in a non judgemental way, unchains the shit we drag around with us each day, the drugs etc become less necessary. Phew, thats enough of that, just off for a tea and a smoke:D

Chaos...

Yes, Chaos is what makes us creative because it is an unpredictable \"thing\" which does not obey to any rule.
This leads our minds to a point where it is necessary to escape from chaos to \"stay alive\" (f.e. you assembled a new big conversion on the kitchen table and your girlfriend comes in...)
That\'s what the psychologists call creativity.
Darwin called it \"survival of the fittest\"

Maybe I exaggerated............just wrote what hit my mind.....

Uh, I see, it was just a creative moment...

WOW!! Some really good stuff here! Im doing a section on creativity for Uni and these answers will really help me come to conclusions about artistic creation.
I did it this way because its easier for me to find out what motivates creatives by asking the creatives themselves.
Now iv jst gotta get it all into OmniOutliner and make sense of it all! lol

I suspect a lot of \"being creative\" is the WILLINGNESS to be creative! Or the inverse, to make my argument clearer. People who have had the creative impulse drummed out of them at some point, whether by cruel or narrow-minded parents, mocking school peers, or endless, mindless toil in the working world, become uncreative. They learn not to think for themselves, they learn not to generate new ideas, because doing so is punished in some way.

Yeah I see where you\'re going Agency, I think the wider issue is having enough respect for yourself to think what you create is gonna be of interest to anyone else.
Although I think some people maybe create stuff and just don\'t have enough confidence to share it with any one.

That I can remember, I have never dreamed in B and W. Never quite made sense to me that one would unless you were completely colorblind. All the stuff you take in visually is in color so when the mind barfs it all back in the form of a dream, it\'s drawing on stored, color, memories.

In the majority of my dreams, I can fly though......wishful thinking?

My two cents or whatever you call it

I think number 1 reason is Creativity = Progess. If a traditional or accepted way of life or whatever is not working, someone needs to think out of the box to change things for the better. This is how civilisation moves forward. People inevent new things, discover new things, revolutions happen... without creativity, nothing would change and we\'d all die out. I reckon animals probably have it on a less cognitive level and their changes happen in super-slow motion compared to ours :]

Number 2 reason:

As has been expressed already, humankind needed creativity to explain the world around them. Why did the sun roll across the sky? The great dung-beetle sun god Ra pushed it along. Why were there stars in the sky? The night was a black curtain and a great moth had nibbled holes in it. Religion plays a great part here. In the early stages of humanity, people would have most likely gone loopy if they didn\'t use their imaginations - building on what they see in everyday life, such as the dung-beetle or moth (yep, I had to use insect examples :D) - to explain what was going on around them.

Nowadays, that most people understand the world in a more scientific way and a lot more knowledge is within our reach and understanding (as we learn from mistakes we learn boundaries to creativity - take Naukhel\'s shaman trying new plants), we use creativity in a different way, thinking out of the box.

What I would really like to know, however, is how people started making art. Maybe as a dedication to the gods they thought of, who made all the amazing things in their world happen - but then it developed into so much more and into lots of little niches (take miniature painting as an example).

*edit* More thoughts on gods: I think maybe people needed a way to thank somebody, an entity or entities, for the things which kept them alive: rain, sun, tasty animals... people a long time ago had a much harder time surviving than we generally do nowadays and understood less. So that\'s where creativity came in :D As I said, without it we\'d probably be no more advanced than x, when we became creative. And x was probably a long long time ago. Maybe the level of creativity in humans helped make us become \"supreme.\" Maybe maybe. I\'m getting a bit confused now, I hope you understood this post lol

Enough waffling from me

education nowadays removes creativity and initiative. i have seen it in too many workplaces.

to be creative is to open yourself up and in some ways be different, nowadays society doesn\'t want individuals. it wants sheep, to do as they are told, when they are told.

i say be different, be creative. hell, run around naked painted blue if that\'s your thing. just don\'t tow the line and lose who you are.

(i\'m an angry hippy realy)

what makes me creative?

I.m afraid that if I tell you... you will all explode into a million little pieces because you are all figments of my imagination and if I examine it too closely.... it will cease to exist....

seriously...

im not really sure... perhaps some would say I suffer from insanity... i say im enjoying every minute of it. I really think mine comes from my sense of fun... and desire to be liked and appreciated... and when is one most appreciated? when they give the gift of laughter or beauty... maybe that\'s selfish... dunno... sometimes though... i just need to... create, design, write, draw...whatever and it haunts me till i do... that annoys my hubby

WP... I do dream in vivid color as well.... but if I tell you what I dream about... my husband will likely kill you lol
