what miniature launched your painting career?

I think the first thing I painted was a Reaper female Archer for our DSA game. I still have her, no highlights, just some washed for the hair and skin, but I think I painted her pretty clean. What followed some time later where some Dire Avenger and Elder Warriors. These where pretty ugly. I didn\'t like painting that much, at that time.

Oh! I just remembered some other things I used to do, long before anything else. I used to make armour and shields for my HeMan figures out of tape, cardboard, old pens, play-doh, whatever I could get my hands on.

I went through a \"fire resistant\" fad around the age of 7ish where I made fire suits for all my Gi-Joe\'s with tape. Just wrapped a few layers around their foot, around their calves, thighs etc, by the time you get their whole body done they look like the space explorers in those really cheap old time sci fi shows. The ones who couldnt bend their knees or elbows.

They used to get the equivalent of squad markings too, I\'d either paint or use a marker to make coloured bars around their foreheads, upper arms, I think one group had their left boot tips coloured green. Not that I knew what squad markings were at that point, it was more I didnt want to get confused so good guys had red stripes, bad guys had blue stripes sort of deal.

In 1987 I was in the 4th Grade. My Mom bought me an issue of Dragon Magazine. Secretly I call every 1-800 # listed in ads for free catalogs. I got a Ral Partha Price List. I saved my lunch money for two weeks and ordered 10 different minis. I had it sent to a neighbor\'s house so my par3nts wouldnt find out. I cant remeber all of them, but there was a Winged Gargoyle, Female wizard with pet dragon, and a Skeleton Warrior w/ Scythe. I painted them with tempra craft paint. I still have the Skeleton Warrior. I was ten years old. lol

Hi,

Orginal gepostet von Dragonsreach
Airfix 1/32 scale Black Watch Highlander from Waterloo.
Humbrol enamels.
(Circa 1970)

:D Thats almost like my first painting steps. I started with the Airfix German Paratroopers, must have been around 1973 when I was seven years old. Unfortunately I dont have them anymore, but in my remembrance they look very good :D
Later I painted lots of Airfix, Tamiya, Revell...stuff (Tanks, Planes, Ships...) until I bought the Hero Quest Game. This game was the actual start of my Fantasy-Mini-Painting-Carreer.

I think....it was a set of three wizards from Grenadier...or a pack of \'Warriors\' from GW...might even be a Julie Guthrie dragon...oh no! Wait, I remember! I painted a GW wardancer for someone in my RPG group at school way before i even knew there were miniatures...

First mini was an old metal Chaos Warrior with an axe and shield. Came in a pack of 3 that cost £1.50. I seem to remember lots of people were complaining due to them having been 99p per pack not long before.

That was 1987 and the fig was undercoated with white enamel. Then I proceeded to paint it with the very few Citadel paints I had. Armour was painted Mithril Silver then details were black. I think I might have put some blood red on the axe head.

My second mini was another of those Chaos Warriors and was painted much the same though I did get to use some Swamp Brown on this one\'s axe haft.

Wish I still had the minis to show. Alas no.

I am still pondering painting my first mini... only building, cleaning, learning 4 me. Before I jump into painting that is.

My first mini was a GW Swooping Hawk (I thought the wings were cool). Although, before that I was re-painting Breyer Stablemates, tiny plastic horses that stand about 3-4 inches tall. Do those count? I even did comissions where I\'d paint them to look like people\'s actual horses. I wish I still had the pics, but that was several computer crashes ago. ;)

Fist ones are I don\'t know when exactly.. some heroquest figs (my sister had the game) painted with those paints that come in those little can\'s with modelships and tanks. I can\'t recall what and how much I painted... not much for sure. Was more miniature drowning than painting anyway.

My first real painted miniature is a 15mm Demonworld thief/archer many years later (about 2 and something years ago)

THAT\'S the one! LOVE him! He was really the best of the bunch, IMO. Even went on a store-by-store continuous search for a 2nd one (they were OOP at the time, some 10yrs ago) for a good friend who really wanted one.

VERY simple paintjob by me: black w/drybrushed silver for ALL the armor and the axe blade, then flesh and stubble on the head. Plain, but very satisfying.:)
