What minis do you comment on and why?

Hey all,

I was just wondering, theres been a lot of talk about voting, but what minis do you tend to leave comments on and why?

Since the comment a day campaign, I\'ve been looking at random images and I find myself drawn to commenting on minis that are in the 6+ rating in the main.

Though I\'ve left 1 or 2 on lower rated minis, I somehow feel I have more constructive things to say to a painter who is on similar level to myself.

I was wondering do you all find yourselves drawn to certain types of minis for comment, level of painting or what? What kind of comments fo you leave?

Kat???

I tend to comment on lower rated minis - 5 or under or on minis that someone has left commentary on that is more viscious than helpful - slaming color choice for being non codex or what ever - those kind of things. If it is a higher rated mini, I tend to ask questions about how something was done or to make a crack about how we are not worthy of such greatness. :D

I find that commenting on every mini helps you appreciate each one more but this can become a chore. Generally, I just return the favor to those who comment on mine. I also assist those who request comments. Since I am not as good a painter as most, I generally stick to comments about things not looking quite right, not about specific problems. Also, I look at the post date before commenting. If it has been up for less than 3 months I will be more inclined to leave a comment.

Your question prompted me to go back and browse by \"my comments\" and I ofund that i apparently don\'t really have much of a pattern.???
However, I\'ve been trying to comment more on lower rated minis lately because they seem to be too frequently ignored. I figure most people painting 7\'s and up don\'t need too much advice (especially not from me:)) and those painting 8\'s and up probably don\'t need too much encouragement. People at the lower end of the spectrum are probably here in hopes of learning and improving and probably need the most encouragement.

It really bugs me some times to see a 9+ with ten to twelve sycophantic comments about how great it is and then see a whole bunch of 5- minis without a word. sometimes it seems like people are saying, \"Well, there\'s no hope for that poor slob\" or \"I won\'t lower myself to even bother looking at that.\" Neither of those attitudes are really in the spirit of this sight, are they?

/rant:eek:ff

sorry, got carried away.:)

Normally, I comment on minis I own or have painted sometime (no necessarily posted here), so I know the specific details about the model.

I do give advice only when requested and in response to specific subjects.

I admit most of my comments are on 6+ minis, since sometimes I find it difficult to say anything nice about lower quality jobs, so, I better keep quiet.

When my opinion differs

If I see a cool mini that is getting a 5 or 6 I\'ll usually leave a comment praising it if I think its a 7 or 8+. I don\'t comment on poorly painted minis since I don\'t consider myself an expert on how to improve. I just think its nice to let people know that you like their mini when others don\'t seem to. :)

I take your point but I do have a couple of issues:

1) I often see a 9+ and feel like I just want to have my say. Now I am not gonna start criticising the colour scheme on models of this rank and often the only thing you can say is \'Wow\' or \'Gosh\'. I don\'t feel that I am being particularly sycophantic, after all these painting giants can do me no favours in return. I also suspect that these people need their self-esteem boosting too. Lets be honest, I bet none of them earn a fortune with their skills, no matter how much we admire their art. I also think it is important that these people keep posting as they perform a fantastic job of inspiring a lot of us.

2) If you take the number of 9+ minis and multiply by ten or twelve...you don\'t get a lot. A mere \'spit in the ocean\' compared to the thousands of comments posted on the literally thousands of lower ranking minis. So I don\'t think there is really too much of an imbalance here.

3) There is a limit to how many times you can offer basic tips and advice, after that you start to lose the will to live.

4) I think the CMON people have got a fair balance going on and, what really encourages me, is the reciprocal ethos that is emerging where painters will immediately go back to a poster to offer a comment in their turn.

5) In my experience, the authors of the 9+ pieces are fairly active in their own right with regard to posting comments. I know there may be one or two exceptions, but generally a lot of the \'big names\' are out there offering advice.

Points well taken, Finn !!

I guess I was just in the mood to vent:flame: Know what I mean?

Think it was brought about by my 15 year olds recent experience here, but no need to get in to that.

no set pattern...

I have really no set criteria in my comment leaving.

I just like to look at the mini\'s, if something catches my eye I comment. If there is something that I think I can be helpful (and it hasn\'t already been said) I comment on that as well.

I freely admit, I have left my fair share of comments of just plain admiration.

I have also left tons of comments on the \"4-6\"s range offering help or expressing sympathy:D

I think the comments are the most important aspect of the site. Sometimes even the \'goofy\' comments add to the sense of community. I feel real learning is taking place via comments (both getting and receiving).

So, go forth and comment!!lol

You don\'t have to elaborate unless you want to. However, one of the big advantages of being a regular forum poster, like yourself, is that we all know you and wish to help if we can. If your 15yr old has had a bad experience here, just try to \'re-arrange\' things and let us know. He/she might not get 8\' and 9\'s but I think we could try and provide a more positive experience...lol

Anything to encourage the next generation, after all, they will be paying foy my/our pension

I guess Finn\'s point number 3 is the main reason I tend not to comment on lower rated minis. I also tend to comment on models I like to paint (wolfen, dragons etc). and models that make me stop and look at them:D

I\'ll usually leave a comment on whatever moves me, particularly if it\'s something I\'ve never seen before, or a project along the lines of something I\'ve done myself, i might post a link.

ya - I don\'t see any rhyme or reason to my commenting - I\'ve done so to scores of all kinds.

If I can\'t say anthing original about a mini I at least try to get my comment in first - otherwise I don\'t usually add on to those minis with a million comments already.

I do do some \"justice\" kinda of comments like if I feel a particular model is underrated or someone was being a jack@$$.
But I never go the other way around and negative comment a \"higher than deserved\" mini - (whatever that means)

Thanks a lot Finn:flip:
I really don\'t, though. I mostly just wanted to site the reason for my slight rant. Suffice it to say that for a week, his only commetn was along the lines of \"What the F@#%# is it?\"

Fortunately, my faith in this community has been restored and he did recieve some useful comments.

New guy here.

What I see are a lot of comments on 8\'s and ups. I think these are mostly of the \'wow, cool\' variety.

I also notice some people don\'t ask for comments. For myself I know critical specific comments help a lot even though I\'m only posting army gaming minis to any of the lists or forums I\'m on.

The few pieces I have commented on were ones I thought were entertaining.

My experience is that it\'s hard to get reviews, or even responses to questions on even mid sized forums or lists, so I\'m not disappointed when I don\'t get any.

I do expect reviews from smaller more specialized lists and venues, though, and if you are trying for comments and reviews, that\'s where I recommend you look for them.

I seem to comment mosly on 7+. Under that, it\'s mostly the same old \"thin your paints\" \"keep your brush steady\" \"highlight\" \"get a tripod\". It gets tiring, and furthermore, people can figure it out themselves by browsing through the site. If there\'s a specific point that needs improvement (like a chrome NMM painted upside down ), then I\'ll comment. Other than that, it\'s on the spur of the moment. I\'ve left comments on 4s & such. Finally, I also leave a comment on minis that I find are way, um, misrated. Like a 2.3 yesterday that looked tabletop quality, or an 8.9 some time ago that looked like a 7.

Edit : also, I find it much much easier to comment on minis I\'ve had a go at myself.

well, I only comment on 6+ minis as I simply don´t view the others (no point in viewing things worse than my own best - 6.8 ) as I want to learn something - and they´re usually GW minis ´cause again, I filter out all others as I´ve never paited minis from other companies - I usually try to say something besides \'wow thats great\' , as even an under-average painter like me can critisize a 8+ mini - nothing is perfect; - do you actually view minis of specific companies??filter out all other?
