What Paint To Use?

Hey, I\'m a beginner and currently use enamel paints from my local arts & crafts store.I\'m doing OK with the paints I\'m currently using, but wanted to know if there were any better or recommended types of paints that I should use. I do not want to use citadel, too expensive, and I do prefer paints that I can get from my local arts & crafts store.

Any Suggestions? Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!:bouncy:

Cheap, decent quality paint

Hey, my big epiphany of painting was when I switched from enamel (used for painting the model cars I used to build) to water-based acrylics. The thought that if I messed up I could just clean it with water astounded me. I could also thin it without passing out from the fumes.
Anyway, lots of people have gotten good results out of Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint by Delta. Some say they are too grainy, but I haven\'t noticed that problem, and I hear you can thin them with distilled water to get rid of that anyway. Anyway, for less than $2 per 2oz bottle with nice functional lids (as opposed to $2.50 for 1/4 oz with crappy lid from Citadel) you can\'t beat the cost, and I think you\'ll find it a lot better than enamels. Plus, they come in a color range comparable to if not better than any other line. Here is one source, but probably any craft store carries them:

If you want to buy a paint designed for mini painting, I will recomend Pro Paint from reaper. they are good. But just like any other acrylic, including Ceramcoat (wihch I also use from time to time, hell I will use what does the job), will need a tad of thinning with water.

When you thin the paint you might need to apply more layers, but the end result will be far smoother.

Paints, Paints, Paints

Ok, now to add to the heresy - I use Folk Art Paints, which I have found to be readily available, not only at my local Arts and Crafts Stores, but also at Walmart, where they are usually a little less expensive, saving more money for mini\'s and brushes. Same clean up advantages and thinnning advantages as the colors from Delta (same manufacturer, I think) and they have a great range of metalics - I really do not like NMM as I feel that metal should look metallic.

I used to use the FolkArt paints almost exclusively and they do have some nice colours, some of which I still use. The problem with them is coverage. Some of the colours seem to require 3 or 4 coats before they even start to give proper coverage. Ultimately it seemed easier and faster to just use Citadel or Vallejo, even though they are a lot more expensive.
