What Paints?

Most of my paints are getting a bit skanky, and I was thinking of getting new ones. I mainly collect Orcs and Goblins, but I also occasionally buy other random miniatures. I only have enough money for 10 paints so which ones would u suggest I get?
Thanks

I\'m not sure if you\'re stuck on GW or not, but I\'ve been looking at this Reaper Learn to Paint Kit #1 and thinking it was a nice selection. I\'ve never used the Reaper Pro paints, but I\'ve heard they\'re on a par with the Citadel stuff.

There are a couple of minis and a brush and instructions in there too - seems like it would make a great gift for a new painter.

Sven Jonsson
GW for orcs

What kind of skin colour are you after bright green or more natural? Pick one (like catachan green) shade with adding black and browns. Highlight by adding bleached bone or bleached bone with a little yellow in it. The skin is the most important part of the ork imo so give that some extra time. Cloths and weapons you can just make messy and dirty.. :)

Other useful colours:

Scorched Brown
Bestial brown
Graveyard earth (for dried mud and basing)
Bleached Bone
Scab red
Blood red
Golden yellow
Boltgun metal
Mithril silver
Vermin fur and snakebite leather (for rust effects)

And yeah black and white of course.

If you purchase the the Reaper Learn to Paint Kits directly from Reaper or find one that has a sticker that says \"Now with Master Series Paints\", you\'ll get bottles of the Master Series Paints rather than pots of the Pro Paints. The first three Learn to Paint kits are a hell of a deal given that 10 MSPs are normally $30 (US) while the kits retail for $26 (US) and include 2 minis and brushes.

As far as orc skin goes, I paint my orcs with the Olive Greens triad from the Reaper MSP line. If I had to pick just 10 paints from the MSP line to paint orcs, I\'d pick:

Olive Green
Pale Olive
Walnut Brown
Brown Liner
Linen White
Oiled Leather
Ruddy Leather
Clotted Red
Antique Gold
Honed Steel

The Walnut Brown is a lovely very, very, very dark brown that I use instead of black. The Brown Liner is essential for doing brown magic wash.

Here is a list of Master Series Paints in the first 3 Learn to Paint kits:

LPTK-1 Armor and Fur

-9003 Blood Red
-9014 Grass Green
-9017 True Blue
-9136 Walnut Brown
-9029 Earth Brown
-9047 Fair Skin
-9039 Pure White
-9037 Pure Black
-9054 Polished Silver

LTPK-2 Skin and Cloth
-9135 Carnage Red
-9008 Sun Yellow
-9011 Leaf Green
-9055 Breonne Blue
-9110 Oiled Leather
-9044 Tanned Skin
-9049 Ancient Bronze
-9037 Pure Black
-9061 Linen White

LTPK-3 Non-Metallic Metal

-9070 Mahogany Brown
-9074 Palomino Gold
-9083 Highlands Moss
-9057 Ashen Blue
-9110 Oiled Leather
-9038 Rainy Grey
-9139 Blackened Brown
-9037 Pure Black
-9039 Pure White

Are you sure about this? It\'s great news if it\'s true.

I thought only kit #4 (flesh tones) contained master series paints, and only three of them plus black and white even in that case. The rest of the kit seems to be extra-tiny pots of PRO paints.

Quite sure. If you buy directly from Reaper or find boxes with a sticker that says \"Now with Master Series Paints!\", you\'ll get bottles of MSPs rather than pots of Pro Paints. Learn to Paint Kit #4 does have all MSPs as well, but only 3 full sized bottles.

If you are ordering sight unseen, you may get a box with the older Pro Paints.

At some point, they are going to change the format of the first 3 Learn to Paint kits to match #4 (3 bottles + a strip of flip top pots on a peg card) since the boxes with full bottles is too much of a good deal.

More information here.

SWEET!

I wonder why they didn\'t change the pics of the sets on their online store.

I\'m gonna have to check my finances - this might be too good to pass up.
