What\'s the Magic Mix?

Hi All!
I was wondering if you can help me with making my own magic mix. I\'ve heard from a handful of people here & there (and me always without a pen at the time, d\'oh!) about what they thin their paints with besides water. It\'s something like Floquil this mixed with Windsor Newton that, but they both make so much stuff! I\'d really like to try this mix, or a different one if you\'ve got one--I\'m tired of fighting with water-rings and things drying too quickly. Do you guys have any ideas?
Thank you in advance for your help!

I\'ve used future acryllic floor polish, I\'m currently working with a 1:4 mix future:water.

I\'ve also heard people talk about windor & newton flow extender and um.....another thing that slows drying time.

AVOID GELLS...that seems to be the consensus

I\'ve also heard about people using rubbing alcohol.

Now I water my paints down currently a good 25% - 40% and usually dole out what I need and add Liquitex retarder and that has been doing a good job for me as of late, though I\'ve yet to try the floor wax.

Do you folks mix your water directly into your paints (I personally have)? How about the floor wax? Or do you just dole out what you need, mix it on a palete and go to town?

For \"normal\" painting - aka anything except washes - I simply use distilled water. For washes I have refined a certain mixture..... I use 1 part Erdal Glänzer (I live in Germany, in the USA you probably would use Future Floor Wax) in 5 parts distilled water and a drop of liquid soap. I mix this with my Windsor and Newton inks (I use ten parts of my mixture to one.... \"brush\" of ink) and the effect is good, but washes are still a messy thing - don\'t expect a miracle, mine flows into recesses a lot easier, but I still would have to do some cleaning (on the mini of course) after that.

Thank you for your quick replies! I\'ve also heard of using Future Floor Wax but didn\'t know the mix, so thank you for sharing that too! Do you pre-mix it and keep it in a bottle, or is it more of a freshness thing where you have to mix it when you want it?

yup those are all good...

Buy some distilled water (a gallon is about 1 dollar) It seems to be very effective for combating water rings...

I mixed it all up in a bottle and use that to refill a dropper bottle I got. Saves time.

Kevin\'s super secret sauce:

empty 8 oz. container

2 oz. retarder
2 oz. flow aid
4 oz. tranparent airbrush medium
2 drops dish soap

mix - transfer to small empty vellajo type bottle.

Golden, Liquitex, Createx, W&N, etc. all make these things, so I shop what is available local.

Well Ive tried stuff but Im back to pure tap water. The thinness I work at gives me enough time for each painting session,if my puddle does start to dry I just add some more water and paint.
Im starting to think all these concoctions are more trouble than they are worth, thought up by top rankers to confuse us mere mortals.;)

If you are not a painting god yet, you should at least be classified as a \'demi-god\'.....
