What\'s with some of these pics?

I\'m gonna get in trouble... I can feel it. But this is something that\'s been bugging me for a while and I gotta get it out in the open.

First off, I\'m not naming any names here, so don\'t ask. But recently many pics have been getting very high scores and have been selling very high on ebay. To me, I seem to think that they look like at least 1 and at most 3 less than they should be getting.

And I know it\'s not my color settings on my monitor, I checked at school and their computers showed the same as mine. Some things are not effected by the computer, such as mold lines, extra glossiness and such.
I don\'t how or why this happens, I can only think it\'s something like in the movie \"They Live\" were everyone but one person can\'t see the aliens unless they have special glasses on. :p

I\'m not being bitter or such, I\'m very happy with my miniature scores. However, I\'m probably not the only one who\'s seen this and I\'m just making a place for others to concur.

Just don\'t kill the messanger. (Namely Me) :)

I understand. I think that alot of people are too generous and that in many cases the average vote is too high. I\'m also somewhat guilty of not handing out many low numbers, I mostly vote in the 6 and 7 range.

I feel that I have a valid excuse though. I use the browse function and only open thumbnails that catch my eye. IMO this eliminates alot of the lower quality stuff from my field of view. In it\'s own way this practice may cause me to vote lower than most folks. Not having looked at as many 3s and 4s I am not as blown away by pieces that are getting 8s and 9s from other visiters.

I also think that I may be judging on some different criteria. For example, I hold poor figure selection against the artist. Honestly, if it looks like a turd with paint on it I\'m probably going to give it a lower score. Even if it is the best painted turd I have ever seen. ;)

Is that what your avatar is? I\'d been wondering....:p

Chrispy, since you mentioned ebay as well, I wonder how the link from ebay to CMON affects scores? Probably some buyers see the \"rated x on CMON\" and wonder what that is and go over. If so, such people may not be as used to seeing quality figs as we all have.

That might be true also. Many people that have seen my figures thought they were the best thing since sliced bread, but I tought they really sucked. I guess if you can dot an eye, you can wow most people but that should not account for comments placed by users, though.

I personally have been looking at all of the 3s and 4s on purpose. I think that the lower scored people need comments more than the higher ones do. I mean, you can only get so many \"Wow-that\'s the coolest thing I\'ve ever seen!\" type comments. I\'ve been trying to make sure that everyone who\'s got a score under a 5 has some sort of comment pointing them towards a direction that will lead to them improving.

I absolutely agree. If you browse and order by # of comments though, the first few pages are all high ranked ones. It\'s very close to ordering by score.

Oh, and Evonine, I think you\'re hooked!
You lurked until the GW thing pushed you to forum post and now you\'ve had like 30+ posts in a week!
Welcome :D

X-File conspiracy?

maybe its a conspiracy?

Step 1: Get your friends to vote highly for you.

Step 2: Post it on eBay for sale.

Step 3: Pray and hope that some suckers will take the bait (thinking that it is after all ranked highly by the worthy people of CMON)

Step 4: If waiting is too long, get some friends to pose as buyers to create a sense that other people are bidding for it too.

PS: Am I going to the slaughterhouse??:(

Anyways, I agree that those with low scores should have constructive comments to inspire them and hopefully rectify their errors. After all, mini painters are not mainstream \"normal\" people...

There are certnainly a lot of things that are higher than I think they should be, but the opposite is true as well. I think that unique idea make a big difference. Afterall, people aren\'t going to vote high on yet another blood-angels space marine painted in the traditional color scheme. (No offense to anybody out there-it was just the most generic color scheme I could think of at the time! ;) ) Basically, the first of a new model up is usually going to get a bit of a boost in scoring......people love novelty! (For those who may have forgotten-remember things like the \"grassy knoll\" which was up in the past....)
The only thing I really have a problem with is the people who wine about their score not being higher in their comments. I realize that some times situations occur where complaing or asking about a particularly low score is merited, but I\'m just tired of seeing someone comment on something, then the poster of that say something like \"why did you have to give it that low of a score, surely it\'s not that bad\" etc. and then seeing the person who originally posted the comment post another comment with a higher score! I\'ve seen this more than once....often enough to notice a slight trend, and it\'s really starting to bother me.....I comment not to make people feel bad, but rather to help them where they may be lacking or to compliment a job well done! I just hope this type of stuff doesn\'t happen to me!

What!!!! You don\'t like my red blood angels :flame: !!!
OK sorry just jocking I don\'t play/paint 40k anyway :|~ . But I do have a question. how many ways are they to paint a blood angel. Plus I usually give my notes based on conversion/ paintjob. Of course the choice of colour is importante but they are somme minis that you really can\'t avoid using a colour.

Brushlicker and Freak!
Big Mean Elf, well except for your space wolf predator, your nurgle stuff is some of the best things you\'ve done :)

Ranking is hard, especially with the variety in quality of photography, and ultimately peoples tastes vary. Personally I really don\'t like that Nurgle champion that is one of the best ranked figures, but the paint job is clearly top notch so ranking is a bit of a dilema (I tend to just not vote if I can\'t deceide).

But you know what really bugs me? The terrain. Its obvious many people voting don\'t have a clue about what makes good terrain. Personally something made using hirst arts blocks shows considerably less skill and thus gets a lower vote than something totally scratch built. Any idiot can build lego houses...
