What\'s Worse?

I love reading the comments people leave on other people\'s pictures...some help me to hone my skills...others reaffirm my disgust with humanity...so...really...

What\'s worse? People that leave nasty snide comments on other\'s work, but don\'t have any of their own work?

Or people who leave nasty snide comments, but consistently get 7\'s and 8\'s?

Seems like the first group is commenting just to be jerks.
The second group could really offer some helpful advice to those less skilled, but it still seems like they comment just to be jerks.

So which is worse?

(disclaimer...I don\'t have any minis posted yet (laziness...thou art my demon)...but I also don\'t slam people for being new and inexperienced either.)

I don\'t cruise the gallery as much anymore. I actually haven\'t seen to many really snide comments. What I do see quite often is when someone takes the time to comment on a mini and offer a crit, then the poster rebuttles back with something like \"The eyeballs are not crossed, and the highlighting is fine as it is\" kind of comment.

But of the two options I like it least when someone who is a decent painter (the 7-8 range as you mentioned) leaves a confidence whittling remark. But I really don\'t see it often at all.

i would say them

at least if they are good, they are cocky but have the skillz. otherwise they are clearly gutless

both annoy me though, almost equally

It rare that we Do NOt Approve a comment.
But there have been occassions when the comments awaiting approval haven\'t been worth the time taken to read them and then pressing the Delete key.
Mostly those seem to be from people with Zero images in their galleries. (Now why am I not surprised).
As freak said Gutless and unwilling to put their own \"efforts\" to the test.

Maybe I spend too much time cruising the galleries and reading comments...time that could be better spent posting pics. <<sigh>>

Nice to see a moderator chime in on this btw.

ScottRadom did make a good point...painters that poo on legitimate advice are just as bad as people who mock others\' work...it\'s kind of like not saying thank you when someone holds the door for you.

Standing up for your work if you feel criticism is off the mark is perfectly acceptable , in my eyes. But, as with criticism, there are good and bad ways to do it. You need to be as polite and respectful about it as the person giving you the critique.

And just snubbing the person off, regardless of whether the criticism is justified or not, just out of hurt pride is never the right way to do it.

Of course I agree with you Ritual, but what I see time and again is the ole\' patented \"please leave me any comments\" and then a comment or crit is left, 95% of the time a fair one, then what I would suspect is the wounded pride response that attempts to be overly defensive of the work.

It\'s a fine line to leave helpful crit\'s and at the same time encouraging ones too. Some are really good at it, some really aren\'t.

Very rarely do I see a crit that is cruel or unfair. Most often I see the good kind fo crit that will say something like \"I like the color scheme but the highlights need to be more apparent\" or the like. I think the core posters of the site are pretty well behaved in this regard.

I think it\'s probably much more effective to become an active member of the forum and post on it to get quality feedback really - there are many folks out there who\'ve taken the time to comment on my stuff. Either positive or negative, it\'s all done in a good and constructive way and has helped no end.

Asking for comments on a CMON entry is sometimes asking for trouble - and whilst I\'ve never had anything I could call offensive, there has been one or two...less than helpful comments from folk who then didn\'t provide the WHYs!However, the unhelpful comments are few and far between (well, I\'m assuming...hmm, I wonder how many really nasty ones about my minis have been deleted???), so I wouldn\'t ever let it bother me really. As long as I\'m happy with the minis I paint, than I think that\'s the main thing!

I think when people that leave nasty comments but have no pictures of their own. To me this says \"I am too insecure with my poor quality painting and cannot bare to let anyone else see it.\"

I know people that leave nasty comments and I asked them why they do it and they said because they can. Pretty irritating but what can you do? They also purposely give good minis ratings of 1 and low quality mini ratings of 10. Go figure...

Hm, I have to say none of the above really affects me. Why should I bother if one out of 150 voters don\'t like me or my work and gives a snide comment? You always have some jerks on the internet. ;)
That doesn\'t mean I don\'t care about criticism! Most of the time criticism helps to look at your work from a different angle. Sometimes you see flaws in your work you didn\'t recognize before. Sure, sometimes some criticism is unjustified but you can always ignore it. Diskussions rarely result in something... ;)

once i left a snide comment on this dudes work cuz he left one of the dumbest comments on skeeves work, funny enough it was a painter who isent known as a bad guy... anyways i felt it necessary to leave him a comment on one of his minis that i didn\'t like in a really Ahole way.

i know this was prob wrong and it did start a whole tread about a whole painting challenge which i ended up figuring was gonna be a waist of time buuuut now i just have to ignore them,it really gets to me tho when people who arent that great of painters comment on people\'s models who say \"I dont see what the big deal with this model is, its just boring\" YEAH thats a BIIIIIGGG help.

Mind you this is a model that won gold in fantasy single last year...

it was just a really unnecessary comment so i left him one to :) i used to do that alot but now i\'ve laid off seeing as how i dont wana be like chanenged to a paint off every time i do it lol

Well the comment he left on skeeves model was just dumb as hell, on a really good model ill add! but yes it doesn\'t make it for me, but he shouldn\'t have done that, like everybody in this thread has said if your not as a good as somebody in painting and your leaving dumb comments on peoples models then your wrong

http://www.coolminiornot.com/195022

here is the model and saying i\'m surprised this placed when you weren\'t even there to see it is just dumb. thats just me. if i were to say anything bad about that picture its the silly blue back drop.

i\'m way passed that now, but since this forum came up i sorta remembered it.

actually, it shouldn\'t have placed. it should have been disqualified as it\'s using an armorcast base:

Neither group bothers me, everybody has their own opinion and likes/dislikes. If somebody takes the time to vote and comment on one of mine that\'s great - at least they\'ve bothered. Personally I paint for the sheer enjoyment of it, scores are not the be all and end all. If someone gave me a 1 but said they liked the idea I wouldn\'t mind. Guess I\'m just too old to care lol

lol that\'s reverend\'s comment - he\'s a right troublemaker that reverend :D

It is well painted I think... it\'s hard to tell really coz of the fecking awful background... I mean ffs - why go to all the trouble of painting something as well as that just to kill it dead with such a shocking choice for a background ??? The PS work is pretty woeful too... really spoils it :|~
