Mostly use a 6x4, but will often use room each side for cards, dice etc and use a 4x4 or a 5x4. I find 5x4 is often the sweet spot (at least for a 40pt. I don't play 50pt yet)

My take is that the game is customizable and you have to agree with your opponents. If you agree to play a 30 pts game on a 6x4 do it.
The standard format is 40 points played on a 4x4. I would say that playing 40 points game is an advantage (i guess this is an argument used by targaryen or free folk players
