What to buy? casting ...

Hello,

Want to try and cast a few things (mainly to practice for a sculpture I am starting that will require it...Demogorgon (who has 2 heads)).

I think I understand the concept/process.

I will be trying to buy some lego to use for the walls/base. I have super sculpey and super sculpey firm at home to use for the initial clay section.

But I am getting confused as to the rubber compound and the liquid resin to get.

Is it better to buy the stuff online? if so, which brands have people used?

Also, what type of spray releasing agent is decent to spray onto sculpey, and a model sculpt so it wont stick? I read PAM is fine. Has anyone tried it, or is a specialty spray better?

I'm at work so I can't make this too long.
For supplies try
SCUPLTURE SUPPLY CANADA . Looks ok. 1 pound of Super Sculpy is $14.69 Cheapest I've seen it here in TO is $15.99- 17.99.
They are down by Bloor and Kipling, I've never used them but know alot of people who do. I can't get there except on Sundays and they are closed.
Also for the clay you can use non drying clay ( Kleen Clay/Plastercene) instead of Super Sculpy.

It certainly can be on price (depending on where someone is based)!

In terms of what to get, if the piece is simple then it might be better to get a cheaper silicone. If the piece is more complex, if you might want to pull more copies and if the higher price isn't a deterrent then platinum-cure silicone is the way to go - easer to use in addition to other advantages.

People have also used thinned petroleum jelly, straight petroleum jelly (brushed very thinly), car wax or furniture wax (again either thinned or brushed out thinly) and various vegetable and mineral oils.

I don't think there's a single answer here but I suspect that speciality release agents don't provide anything that the right substitute does, except some assurance that it'll work without having to be tested in advance.

Meant to post the link to this earlier Sanjay, here's a thread on planetFigure that's worth a read on various related issues:

The two types I think are polyester and polyurethane but there are literally dozens of alternatives, with a variety of curing times, viscosities and other properties. There are some older threads here (and on pF I think) that mention specific casting resins.
