What to do for a painting Class?

I think Frenchkid was right that it might be best to do a GW figure, as they\'re most readily available. In that case I think you should do one of the new wood elves, as they\'re among the best figures GW has produced in years.

Otherwise maybe Sardar Tillius from Rackham, or maybe Mira the reckless.

That article is very useful. I use a similar technique, but a bit cruder, also I go from black upwards and use washes for the shadows.

I\'m wondering if I can get the same subtle tonal qualities using different colours you do but with washes instead of feathered layers, gonna have an experiment on my GD entries :)

Actually if you look at my gallery, I have almost no freehand, or much experience doing it other than on a completely 2d surface. I\'m actually sort of scared to try it on a 3d mini...so that will probably not be a focus :(

Wow... you\'re right. i honestly pegged you as a freehand god because of your bases, but now that i go back and look... there\'s not much on the actual minis. Boy, do i feel dumb. BUT, the freehand you do have, 2D or otherwise is superb and i\'d like to see more as it\'s made please:D

Steb-by-step. As for the miniature choise, I think it will be the best if you pick the mini yourself.

@darkartminiatures
Read my earlier post in this thread. There\'s a link to Kaple\'s site where he has a great NMM tutorial.

What I\'d particularly like to see is more help with bases. I\'ve got flocking materials and all, but when I glue the grass down, it tends to look like... well, like it\'s just glued there. I need some help figuring out how to make it look better.

Bases in general, really, I need help with. But grass in particular.

ok, well it looks like a single mini tutorial wins, I\'ll start looking for one to do, suggestions her are more than welcome

How about Rackham\'s Priestess of Steel?
My reasoning: - it\'s a female (that seemed to be unspokenly decided on already), - plenty of metal for these NMM freaks, - some good room there for freehand as well, and - Rackham minis seem to be fairly accessable world-round.

Just a suggestion! :D

I think you have something there Duende. Plus there\'s a crystal on her staff, so Eric can also explain the latest technic he\'s been practicing ;).

I personaly vote against ( sorry duende )
Too much armour not enougth of the rest, the fact that there\'s no face is also a bad point for me since that\'s a minis focal point and it would be nice to have a small part on doing face. And rackham minis tend to be filled with small details wich might not be a good thing. Jusr my two cents ( euro :p)

I agree with frenchkid I think, I really don\'t think rackham minis for the most part fit my style so well, with all the fiddly details. That and I\'d like to do a real face, since I think they\'re a strong suit for me. I would love to do a freebooter, however those are expensive and can be hard to get for some.

I also really like that new wood elf spell-singer with staff raised above her head. (this one may be good because GW is easy to get everywhere, and this is my favorite current GW model, although it also seems to have fiddly details)

Or the new female sorcerer that Werner did for Reaper. (although the only nmm would be the sword) This one has a crystyal and a lot of nice hair to work on.

I voted for a step-by-step (your choice of mini), but we\'ll have to see if I have the guts to actually take part! I tried to follow Klute\'s skin tutorial (after the fact) and my skin looks like crud!

Oh well, we can only try...

@ GS - Thanks!

@ FK - That\'s OK if you don\'t like it. I was only trying to think of a mini that fits the criteria that everybody seems to want...which would (in my mind) be:
- female, preferably the pretty, well-shaped kind ;)
- has some metal for NMM
- has some room for free-handing
- has visible face and nice amount of hair
- is obtainable by anyone despite geographical location.

The priestess I thought fit MOST of those... so I brought her up as an idea to get the brainstorming started.

@ Eric - Nice Reaper, but I hear Reaper\'s are hard to come by in Europe, and is that one even released yet?? Maybe the GW would be a better idea...

@ RD - Don\'t feel bad. Klute\'s tutorial didn\'t work for me either. Not to say anything bad about Klute! He was great, but some methods work for some but not for others.

Any other ideas? What mini lines are most commonly available anywhere, other than GW? I could make more suggestions if I knew what\'s available to people.

A step by step guide for a certain mini!!!!
If you get the right mini you can cover everything in that poll. You can also put in more detail on certain parts of the mini.

I think that nowadays almost everybody can find Rackham and Privateer Press minis. Indeed, Reaper is hard to get in France (I don\'t know for other european countries), and I guess we can forget about Ilyad for the people on the other side of the pond ;). As for Hasslefree, Spyglass, and all the other mini\'s in the CMON store, I see no problem with them. Borg did a great job last time I ordered :D.

I have always found Reaper near to impossible to get hold of in the UK and normally only manage to get the odd one or two that I like from The Keep Wargaming (Paul & Treasa Bailey) at the odd show if they have them at the time.

hmmmm, good point GS, maybe I\'ll pick a cmon store mini...see if we can get Borg sold out in something fast :D

....might be good to give him advanced warning....

What about the Hedge Wizards too?

Could TAB get some to send people that couldn\'t get it in the UK? I\'d also be willing to look for whatever got chosen here in the big A. We\'ve got three or four stores I could hit and buy out all their stock! lol
