What to paint

it that time of year folks, UK GD, and what the hell am i gunna do, ever since i joined this site, just over a year ago, i started to move away from just GW minis and started exploring other manufactors, now i can\'t get enough of THEM, but i can\'t find a mini that i like thats why i am look for some inspiration from you guys, i need a GW mini thats on a 25mm base(but it can be a terminator on a 40mm base WTF???), and its got to have not been done before i looked at all the minis done before and all the \'good\' ones are gone:(, so can you PLEASE give me some suggestions(sp?).

There are a lot of minis on CMON so no way could I go through them all to see if one has already been done!

Have you looked at vintage OOP minis? There are quite a few from the late 80\'s and early 90\'s that still look good but are rarely seen.

Pointless if you are entering it for Golden Deamon Uk.
Aim for either an Ork or Space Marine for 40K or something Dark Elf for WFB as those are the lines that are being pushed in the most recent sales drives.

wait so the whole point for GD is marketing?
so lets say you painted the best mini at GD and it was oop, would you not be allowed to win?

Allowed yes (there have been exceptions, due to some ranges currently not being included in the latest version of the background), but it may not get the same attention from the judges as newer stuff.

The best advice I can give is have a look here :

Look at what has already won, and now think up of a completely new idea (but maybe with OOP parts) and have fun with it ;).

Past winners in different countries have won without the usual eye-candy that judges look for (conversions, sculpts, latest minis, ...). Though it\'s harder, it is doable.

yeah i was looking at that site all yesterday trying to find something that hadn\'t been done before but the list of minis i made got shorted and shorter...

Notice that I said \"idea\", not \"mini\". If you\'re painting the mini for the sake of painting it, all fun that it can be ;), it won\'t be enough for a contest. You have to come up with something that makes it special (theme, word play, composition, color scheme, freehand, ...). It doesn\'t have to be complexe, just something that doesn\'t ring \"déjà vu\" ;).

i don\'t think i have ever copied another pearsons colour scheme(appart from when the background to the mini calls for it) but all the nice minis have gone, Bill\'s priest, nice mini, arewn, dwarf thane, all gone, i have one mini in mind; here

Do a group of dwarven thunderers up as an Imperial Guard squad.

Or put teeeeny tiny SM armor on a Runesmith. Can give him a flowing scroll or two, also.

Actually... just about anything with a dwarf will do.

i dont think anyone can advise what mini to pick really. its all down to what kind of minis you are into, and personal preference. but now when i\'m thinking up ideas i try and make them funny :D like in a diorama a grot on a sm head covering his eyes while other grotz tie him up lol also something i find useful is to jot or sketch your ideas into a notebook.

also in my opinion the mini has to catch the judges eye whether thats through bright colours etc.

i presume its youngbloods your entering ???
