What went wrong here?

Hi guys,

I've been painting a chaos knight and I've founf that when painting his horns with a mixture of astronomican grey and kommando khaki the paint is slightly see through to a dark grey-brown undercoat, I've done quite a few coats and I just can't get it to look opaque enough. I've taken a photo but for some reason the paint looks a really solid colour in the photo!

Any ideas why this might happen - is it just the paints I'm using?

PS All my uploaded photos have been deleted somehow.
Also, all the colours for this new forum are hideous; bit ironic considering this is an art forum.

Did you give the paints a good shake beforehand in case they separated? The foundation paints are rotten for that.

Kommando khaki does not cover well. Excellent for getting smooth blends though.

About you pictures, did you host them somewhere else then on cmon?

About the colours, surely that is personal opinion.

It looks to me like you are dry brushing the horns, or drawing your brush just over the ridges allowing the under paint to show from the crevices. That's what I'm getting from the pic. Other than that I can only offer what has already been written.

As for the Forum colors the Aquamarine isn't to hard on the eyes. I'm just trying to figure out how to keep it that color so I don't have to reset it every time I log on.

Where were you hosting your images?

If I understand what you're saying correctly then yes it was my intention to just paint the ridges and leave the recesses dark, I am mainly concerned that the light colour still shows through the colour beneath. I think it may be the kommando khaki in the mix that is producing this result, I'll experiment with pure astronomicon grey.

More coats. Some mixtures don't cover as well as others, so you simply have to apply further coats if you need complete coverage.

Too many coats obviously can lead to unwanted texture, so here's where you might cover the problem undercoat first in a similar colour that does cover well and then go in with the final colour.

When I first started painting, a better painter told me that if you can cover it in one coat, you need to thin your paints more.

what i would do is strip the hornd with rubbing alcoholl. the use a brush on primer white. then do a base coat of the darkest color that you want, games workshop foundation paints ftw! them paint on the color you want mixed with a bit of the base color over it all. then go on the ridges with your brush with your main color. the comando kaki i think you said. then hit the verry high points with bleached bone. blend the bleached bone and kaki to make you blends smooth
