Sadly, it\'s not just television that does it anymore. The newspapers (even the serious ones) are filled with badly written, badly investigated news stories where half of the facts are false or incomplete, and there aren\'t much facts in the articles to begin with.Originally posted by dauber22

I did a Websearch to find a 4 month old local news story, and couldn\'t believe the hundreds of similar cases I uncovered around the country.
About 4 months ago, a Long Island girl was having her 14th birthday party, and as usual it was crashed by many teens who weren\'t invited. She put on a rap song that got a guy angry because it was \"disrespectful to his gang\", and he told her to turn it off. She thought he was joking, and didn\'t comply. He shot her in the face, killing her.

When I tried to find some reference to this story, I discovered that this is a common occurence amongst inner city youth. Gangs find out when rival\'s families have a birthday party, and show up to kill people, often simple by driving by the house and shooting through the windows. The last case just happened Friday night in NYC, yet I didn\'t here anything about it locally, and the girl was just 13.
Not all cases are gang-related, but they always seem to happen at parties. I never thought I would have to worry about sending my kid to someone\'s Birthday! What\'s the world coming to?

I don\'t have any time for gangs, whats this \"Be a man\" Bullshit?! I grew up with the military and knew a lot of good men who were trained to kill, doesn\'t mean they condone it and openly brag about it.

. The event that started this thread is truely horrible, I just don\'t think the problem can be solved as simply as TBS stated it.The Death Penalty is useless. People usually sit on deathrow for 10 years, waiting on appeals that tie up the legal system and cost the taxpayers millions.
That, and death really isn\'t a punishment to someone who doesn\'t believe in the afterlife. At least with the old electric chair there was a few minutes of pain, but now with lethal injection you just fall asleep peacefully.
Thats why I believe in Midieval torture as a sentence. A few weeks with Igor down in the dungeons should change those \'gangstas\' attitudes real quick.
Or better yet, if a person is sentenced to death, then they should be kept in a special facility where their organs can be harvested to save lives. This way, they can be kept alive as long as possible hooked to machines, fully aware of whats happening to them. Punishment should be so horrifying that no one would even consider committing a crime.
Then again, I think people should have a finger cut off every time they litter. lol

Sadly, you are quite correct.
TV is just the most glaring, obvious example. There are very few actual reporters anymore. Most of the time, the stories are just copied off the wire service which is nothing more than a rewording of some government handout. Perfect example was the ridiculous shooting incident with VP Cheney. The media\'s biggest complaint (over here at least) was that the White House press guy didn\'t tell them about it until Monday.
Excuse me, but you\'re supposed to be journalists. You\'re not supposed to just wait around the White House press room nibbling the free buffet and waiting to be HANDED the news. Nixon would\'ve been elected God Emperor, his body encased in a glass sarcophagus in the Oval Office, by now if Woodward and Bernstein had just waited around for the White House press release about the Watergate Breakin. I found a chart with crime data from 2001 and 2002. it shows acts of violent crime in the US per 100,000 people.

If you listen to the press, American culture is getting more violent and crime ridden. However, if you look at the statistics the opposite is true - but, that doesnt sell airtime or papers.
