What would it take for you to sell ALL your Warhammer army?

…as I've been asking this question for a while.

I have a sizable Warhammer 40,000 2000pt Imperial Guard Army. I've been painting and collecting it for over 10 years and have only battled a handful of times. A few examples can be found here..

Since finding girls a job and a active social life, they’ve been under my bed gathering dust and growing fat for the past 3 years. I never have the time to get to a local GW or know anyone that plays So it begs the question, should I bite the bullet and sell it ALL and let someone else enjoy?

Have you sold anything like this and lived to regret it, as I'm worried that's what might happen?

i just gave all of mine away last week. 3 whole armies including all of my supplies. i kept space hulk and super dungeon explore. thats it. women and sex change your outlook quickly.

I severely downsized when I bought my own house and found an "other half" and again when she moved in. Although she's very tolerant about me buying models and painting etc (I don't game much), she is very much a "if you're not going to paint it or only have a little interest then clear it out to make room for something else".

The money for all the bits I've sold has so far bought a large fish tank and I've got money put aside for miniature purchases (such as HH stuff).

I guess giving it away is an option. But would rather sell (I already have a fish tank , which brings up another question. How on earth can I come up with a price for something so specialised and invested in i.e. man hours, but without slapping a price on it that people would think I'm mad.

Have a look on ebay for similar armies to yours for sale, look at about 10 and be hinest with how good your stuff is, and price accordingly, set reserve if you want, or just put a starting bid you are happy with accepting as the minimal you will take for it etc.

Advertise the auction on CMON, any forums you are on etc.

Good luck, i sell a few armies now and then a year, sometimes they sell for good money, sometimes its minimal, depends on the takers

To answer the question directly - it would have to be something very drastic. Major, life-changing, alter the course of (my) history serious stuff.
The photos you've posted, and the fact you've spent so long with them indicate to me that you have a real passion for this project. My Dark Angels are the same, the "ongoing project" as it were.
Social life and girls come and go, the miniatures will wait. Sad (?) but true.
Social life and sex will change your outlook, but as you get older it is true that these too will lose their importance for various reasons. I have been with my wife for more than 10 years now. For most of that time my stuff has been in storage. In that time we moved house often, averaging close to once a year at one point. I never had time to get to a FLGS, let alone GW when it was walking distance from work. The last move took us out of our region completely, no friends, no store... A while back, I went through and culled down, whatever I wanted to keep I put back in storage, the rest went to ebay. It helped pay for our wedding. Now that home life has settled somewhat, I have found time to get the some of the stuff out and push some paint around. I may not get to play soon, but I'm still enjoying just painting when I get a chance, usually after 10pm friday night until my eyes wont take any more. Also I've started dropping in on the FLGS, there are always opportunities there for games.

I'm more into the painting than the playing, so I haven't had any issues getting rid of my old armies (done that twice now). Once I've had the minis sitting around for long enough I get to the point where I'd rather sell them off and use the money to buy a new one to work on. I prefer to think of it as recycling my armies.

If you're not using them (or displaying them) and you really don't see that changing, might as well find them a good home. If you're feeling a little sentimental, keep a few. Maybe set aside a smaller 500 pt army and sell off the other 1500.

I sold off most of my 40k stuff years ago when I started uni. I had other things to focus on, and gaming was kinda left behind due to peer pressure and other stuff. About 7 or 8 years ago, not long after I moved to Japan, I got slowly back into it, as there were folks around who gamed and I needed a social life in this country where I didnt really speak the language and folks were all like foreign and different and stuff. Once I was back into it again I really regretted selling all my minis, and spent a lot of time and money chasing down pretty much the same stuff I had sold years before. Essentially, unless you're a pro level painter you wont get back what you paid for the minis, and even if you are a pro you'll never get back what you put in in terms of man-hours. So, if you have the space and aren't desperate for the cash, I say stash em until you need them again. When I think back to all the people I used to game with when I was a teenager that I'm still in touch with now (I'm 34), only 1 out of about half a dozen of us no longer games/collects in one form or another. The rest of us either never stopped, or stopped for a period of years but subsequently re-started.

Hell! If your worried, I wouldn't sell. As I sell it the models themselves take up little in the way of room, and who knows, one day you may get back into the game. From my perspective GW really doesn't kill off a unit for more then a couple of editions (old is new) and guard is generic enough that you should have the large part of an army should you take the game back up.

As for me, I really can't see me selling an army off. Odd models here and there, possibly. Although I tend to give those friends (ok mostly trades) who can use them. But I think that if I had too give one or more up do to space issues or moving to Eastern Bumackastain (not money issues) A month long raffle at the local game shop with the monies going to a local charity. We had a couple the last five years or so, that raised a thousand dollars of so, one being any heavy mech IG (5000pts in tanks, and 2000 in troopers?) and the other was a grab bag of old Armourcast units (Reaper and a Warhound titan, as well as some of the Tyrian vehicle sized stuff).

Well, despite having regular sex, a social life, and a busy work schedule, I've managed to assemble and gather plenty of armies. I've sold most for a lot less than what they probably were worth.

I've been slowly purging all my GW stuff.

I usually sell my armies when they are done, if they dont see ant gaming time.

They take up apot of space and the cash from the sale funds new stuff.

And army painting just isnt that fun anymore, even though i keep trying.

Oh and women and sex easily exists next to painting minis.

I did that this summer. I stripped everything and made about $300. Not a great deal but recouped what I had spent ( got the army cheap) and I was glad to be rid of it. Spent the cash on models I will enjoy painting, instead of dread. Like vike, I am slowly purging my remaining GW crap. Costs too much for the rules, takes too much effort to play (time, packing, etc), and in comparison to the games i am playing now wasnt very fun for me.

Perfect! I'm going with Bailey03's suggestion.

Makes sense, as I can still play a fun battle with 500pt 'if' an opportunity arises. After all, playing a 2000pt army and having to relearn all the rules to all the characters is a time-suck in itself as well as logistics of transporting a Imperial Guard Army across London on the tube. Ironically, the British government have recently announced a downsizing of its forces. If it works for the UK, it'll work for the Imperial Guard lol
