When did art first 'hit' you?

When did you have your first, sort of epiphony about art? Do you remember as a youth, or maybe later, seeing a piece of work and having a deep reaction/connection to it? One of my earliest memories was when I was (guessing here) about 10 and had gone to the California Palace of the Legion of Honor - Valhallah of museums!! I remember seeing a small marble sculpture. While this isn't the same sculpture, it was in this vein and I was strongly moved by it in a way I couldn't understand. There was a connection, almost like a song that put's into words what.s been on your mind and you weren't even aware of it up until you heard the song. It was that experience and many more that made me know that art was my destiny.

The image thing simply isn't working for me lately so here's a link - http://records.viu.ca/~mcneil/jpg/sculpture.jpg

To me it wasn't being a fan of art that got me into minatures painting but the warfare side of Warhammer. I grew to prefer painting the figures instead of fighting with them after about 5 years collecting.

I have seen some of the most famous art pieces in the flesh at the Louvre but couldn't help feeling underwhelmed by the Mona Lisa. I never expected the painting to be so small!

I was seven or eight.
There was a sculpture in front of a building that I vividly remember stopping to look at every time I walked by it.
From every angle, it looked like something different.
Then they tore the building down, and so far as I know, the sculpture went with it.
I spent three years trying to re-create it with play-doh, and other mediums, but never got it right.

You know, I don't think I've ever "connected" with art. Guess I've just got too much logic-like brain.

Now, if we're talking equations, I find some of those rather beautiful.

As a tiny humanoid I connected with cartoons. Mimicked them in drawings. Sounds odd, but as one of that artistic bent that first realisation "oh, this isn't something other people do, I can do it" was something special.

First bit of art that'd have me staring it for ages was some Bosch, or Dali. They were popular amongst hippies apparently, being quite trippy to look at, my folks being hippies had several prints of theirs.

First bit of art I latched onto without steering was Lichtenstein. The comic style becoming art, did quite a formative job on my head. With Warhol backing him the whole Pop Art shebang informed a lot of my opinions on "art". Find myself embracing design principles and sneering at the pretentiousness of the more foot stomping "lookitme" art.

CYLON!

Seeing that I've never know a guy by the name of 'Art'. Can't say that I've ever been hit by him.
hehe. sorry had to do it.

Don't think that I've ever had a "A hah" moment like that. For maybe on a couple of Monet's pieces, or some Impressionist pieces maybe, but no moment that I can think of. Did I miss something? I wonder.

Miniature painting started it for me. When I first got into warhammer, the gaming side, (ironically the side that I no longer participate in at all) I realized, "Oh no! I have to PAINT the minis???" A friend of mine and I sat down to paint our first minis at the same time. I painted a necron scarab swarm and... HOLY CRAP MINE WAS BETTER THAN HIS!! This got me excited. This was when i was about 10 or so. I continued painting minis and really enjoyed it. I had always liked drawing and painting, but never thought myself very good at it. Then in highschool I was required to take an art class... and wouldn't you know it, I actually WAS pretty good at drawing. It was at this point that I could go to art museums and the like and actually truly appreciate the artwork. After that, I took pretty much every art class I could. And NOW, I'm going to be going to art school. So there you go. Thanks Games Workshop!

I've always liked darker pieces... some of my favorite artists: Francis Bacon, James Ensor, Kristian Wahlin, and others.

When I first moved to California at around 9 my Dad figured he'd shove sosme culture in us so he took us on tours of every Forrest Lawn cemetary in the state. They all had replicas of statues and churchs from Europe. I remember being very embarrassed by the naked statues and bored by the paintings. But then we would go into a chapel and I'd get entrance by the stained glass windows. I loved the color and play of light. The blues were incredible. The golds and reds. I still get goose bumps thinking about it. I've wanted to make people feel the same way ever since but I can't scultp or draw so I paint minis instead.

Can't say art ever "HIT" me per se, but I've been aware of the image as something to study and consider for many years.
I suppose that I really have one of my uncles to thank as he is the one who used "comic books" to stimulate and improve my reading.

As for "Art" in the traditionalistic sense of the word well, can't say that there was ever one defining moment.

I never connected with art.

Come on, what I do with a miniature is basically a 3-dimensional "Paint by numbers". It's the slightly hyped up version of a coloring book. I love doing it, and I'm often proud of what I can manage, but I don't consider it a connection with art.

The closest I've come is looking at this well crafted cherry wood armoire. The whole thing is an exercise in geometric shapes, with no organic shapes making up it's design. Functionality with an emphasis on simple elegance. It inspired me to pick up a saw and spill a pint of two of my own blood over the course of my years.

Music got me. From the age of 4. Singing. Then piano (which frustrated me endlessly),
then brass instruments, then reed instruments. Moved to drums. Then on to guitar.
And through it all, there's always been singing. I still can't play piano very well, but I
can pick up the basics of most songs on guitar before the song's half way over.

I don't have a favourite artist, in any medium, but having tried to do almost everything
over the years, I'm able to appreciate just about anything.

As long as I can remember I've always enjoyed drawing and admiring the artwork in my books as a kid. In particular I had a hard bound collection of Hans Christen Anderson's fairy tales with watercolor illustrations that were beautiful. That always stuck with me. Then I got away from it in the late years of high school and early college because art isn't "practical" or so I was told. Then I started playing D&D and painting minis. Once I started getting more serious about minis I realized I want to do art more and more. Once my corporate soul devouring job became too depressing and my brother passing away I realized life was too short to not do what I love--art! Now I'm finishing up my second semester of art school and enjoying it immensely!
