When do you all begin big projects

I\'m currently painting like a loon in an effort to get me an entry for Golden Demon this weekend. The couple of times I\'ve put something in before I\'ve always said \'must start earlier\' but never have, which has just got me thinking...

When does anybody else start planning \'projects\' for events and how do you split up the time you have? Do you dive straight in, or do weeks/months of planning and preparation?

No particular reason behind the question, I was just curious.

I usually don\'t have very detailed plans on what to do when I do \"serious stuff\", i.e. stuff that I might consider bringing to competitions. Usually just a general idea of what I want, that may be changed partially or completely as I go along. And, I usually start too late. :p

I usually have one big project finished per year (and several pending at all times :p). I\'ll generally do a rough draft of what I have in mind and sometimes I might paint \"test minis\" to try out new techniques.

Actually finishing a project, for me, will depend on how close the deadline is, what started projects would be finishable under those circonstances, and what amongst those best fit the theme if there is one, or just plainly floats my boat at that moment.

Depends on the project. But regardless of good intentions procrastination can lead to something being started at the last minute!

Honestly though, I\'ve tried to stop working towards arbitrary deadlines like shows but instead just do things in their natural time (it takes as long as it takes). There\'s enough stress in life without adding to it in a hobby too... it is supposed to be for relaxation after all.

I usually set certain goals before a competition, for instance, finish three specific projects. Usually, I won\'t have time to finish all of those to the standard I want, but if I have two done, I can skip the third and know I have at least two things I\'m proud of. Had I gone for just the two projects I might have tarried and only got one finished... lol

i used to plan out a year ahead of time... then i got tired of that because i just couldnt get anything done or lost interest. now i paint an army at a time and once in a while i throw in an extra mini for kicks and giggles to paint. whatever i have towards summer, i end up putting into shows. and bob\'s your uncle.

The last three years dioramas were started by the year befores Golden Demon. This is the first year I\'ve not had a diorama started for the next year.

I\'ve started sculpting a large scale model for next year though.

I like to plan ahead. Start early, finish early.

Depending on the deadline and complexity I can approach them in different ways.

Right now I\'m working on two large cannons with no deadline.

I have a basic idea.
I have a box dedicated to each.
I collect junk/bits and put them in whichever box the parts seem appropriate for.
Let it all \'simmer\'........just think about it and see what pops into my mind.

This year I had July and August pencilled into my Diary for GD - with a firm idea for my entry (after changing it from earlier in the year).
Only nothing went according to plan, I stripped it twice, and sacked it to work on something else - which I also ended up stripping.
So have got my entry done (almost finished) in the 2 weeks before GD.

Not sensible - but then my entry isn\'t big or clever or fancy. It\'s just my entry.

I would think about how much time it\'s likely to take you to complete your idea, and look at your calendar. Last minute work is very painful, and often means you rush, but some people like that kind of pressure.

Usually, I plan far ahead. Then dump all plans and start something completely new a week before the event. Most of my GD figs have gone that way. I think my sculpted Ogre was about a week and a half before to be fair (though I painted the Eldar Ranger in the same week, and Boromir on the last day)...

I always come up with a plan and then create the base. Then I quit..

Then I get a new plan, create a new base. Quit and the next day I got some new idea\'s and I also forgot a lot of things I had earlier so I always end up with something that seems better than my original plan.

With me I normally plan an idea for what will be my main entry shortly after GD. I\'ll spend a couple of months tinkering and converting and collecting any reference material I can find. They will then sit on a shelf until the summer which is when I actually get around to painting as I tend to find that over the course of 6 months my painting has improved. If I have the time and inspiration I will work on other entries whilst the main one is sitting on the shelf.

This year was slightly different as I have already got next years main project in mind, the large FW marine converted to be a Soul Drinkers librarian ( it\'s all Gigantics fault for that damn fine Ultramarine that he did:D ).
With a bit of luck that may actually be ready by next yearlol

@Ritual, I have to admit that off & on I\'ve been painting/model making since I was about 13. (Yep 40 bleedin years :eek:).

@Einion: What can I say I\'m a \"Glass half full\" kinda guy. lol (Youth .......Tee Hee)

I treat it like buying Christmas presents. Plan plan plan, make promises to do it early and then put it off untill xmas eve.
