Where do we draw the line?

Rev I couldn\'t have said it better myself.
1. yelling at the refs is a good way to get thrown out of the game. Do you not watch baseball, basketball or football?
2. explaining the rules to the judges is a good way to get thrown out of court.
3. It is a painting contest. Ask any three knowledgable people which minis should place where and you\'ll get five opinions.
4. If they held the same contest with the same minis and the same judges tomorrow, the placings would be different.
5. It is GD. Winners will resemble the latest box set or rule book release.
6. Get over it.

Sorry, I can\'t help myself, have to reply to this one...
There was no yelling involved, and no unpleasant language, just reasoned discussion.
And no, I find watching other people play sports to be a largely pointless use of time which could be better spent engaged in creative persuits of my own. And thankfully the three you mention are not televised in the UK anyway.... we have enough football (sorry, soccer) to more than make up for it though
Thankfully, most judges (in the legal sense) know the rules.
If you are going to organise a competition and encourage people to put very large amounts of time, effort and money into competing in that competition, and you are going to publish a written set of rules for that competition... then you must stick to those rules.
I utterly stand by my right as a competitor to, if pushed, point out the written rules to the judges if they chose to change them or ignore them on the day of the competition... I only regret not standing up for the other competitors who were wronged in the same way.
If that makes me a bad competitor, then I am proud to be so and would not hesitate to do exactly the same at any other competition, be it mini painting or any other hobby or sport.
Written rules are not open to interpretation or personal preference like who places in the final decision is.
You may well be right on both counts...
To give credit where due, that is one thing I did not see in this comp. I think that is more of an issue where head office staff are heavily involved in judging instead of painters.
I think I can be allowed at least a small smirk at the irony of the fact that this thread has rumbled on for a week with little or no input from myself (certainly since page 3), and whilst the mountain of \'what he said\'s\' grown on both sides, I\'ve got two new competition entries well underway and the artwork for a third started too.
I have got over it, learnt a lot (from the comp and this thread)... and I\'m back painting minis now... though I thank you for your concern

I know what you mean....
I remember one year at GDUK in the diarama section one of them had used Galadriel\'s mirrior from the the LoTR\'s set in a very Brettonian setting. WTF ?!?:flame:
I thought you couldn\'t use any of the LoTR compontents in anything other than LoTR models/diarama\'s.:cussing:
Mention it to the GW staff on the way home and got told that the judge\'s word is final.:evil:
So not happy about it.It won the Bronze too

I thought the rules was you can only use LotR stuff with LotR, no rule the other way around that I know of.

what made the setting bretonian? where there bret pieces used or something?
Cuz typically yeah you can\'t use the LOTR models with any other models because of the licensing sensitivities.
But if there wasn\'t anything actually Bretonnian used and it just was painted to look bretonnian then I do believe that is still kosher.
