Hah, well, in 10 years I\'ll probably still be painting the same four minis that I am now.
ditto

i reckon it\'ll go from strength to strength. \'geek chic\' is in. i reckon it\'ll be more widely acknowledged and become more mainstream (although never mainstream i\'m sure!)

My guess:
The PC/PS/Box/Wii will drive the steak into the heart of this industry.

Gone from mainstream to more like military/historic gamers. Odd bits of metal very hard to find. Opponents even rarer. Crappy recasts common on the play field as the industry moves back into the garage.

Gatherings looking like a cross between a Viet Nam vets parade and a Star Wars convention. Old gamers bringing out their odd bits to show off.

Please tell me I\'m just having a bad day.

GAME OVER MAN! GAME OVER!

I would agree with others who have said, if computer gaming was going to \'destroy\' tabletop gaming, it would have happened by now. Just as e-books won\'t ever replace paper and ink, people will always want something physical to interact with.

1st person shoot-em-ups certainly haven\'t dented the market for Paintball and Airsoft gaming, uf anything, they\'ve increased it. I think the fantasy/sci fi strategy games on consoles and PC\'s will only boost tabletop gaming.

I think GW are on a bit of a downward spiral IMHO, having seen what they\'ve been up to the last few years and working in the toy/games industry myself, I feel they didn\'t capitalise as they should have on the massive, but short lived, income boost from the LOTR franchise and are a little too stuck in their ways... they aren\'t spending enough time or money on looking at the future and aren\'t willing to accept that anything other than the status quo could be viable... they also have a tendency to loose their best creative staff at an alarming rate.

I would also agree that there will be an increase in the number of small mini producers coming from the painting/modelling scene and producing low volume stuff for all of us painting geeks, which can only be a good thing.

I think, unfortunately, Rackham may dissapear following the (imho very bad) decision to start veering towards pre-painted plastic minis which I think seriously alienates their primary market in a vain attempt to capture a new larger market who, without gargantuan (and unfeasable) marketing spend they won\'t capture.... which is a pitty.

In general, I don\'t think that an enormous amount will change. Like many niche hobbies I think what we do will always have a level of interest at which things reach equilibrium. Surges such as LOTR and the GW/MB tie ins will come and go but overall things tend to even out with a general trend to growth in line with population.

Jeez that all sounds excessively dull :)

Screw it, I go with the zombie appocalypse scenario.

Thanks. Guess I was having a bad day. I\'ve seen two good gaming cons go down the tubes in the last two years. The cons I do make seem to be GW or nothing. (other than the historic military guys - they play some neat stuff.)

Yea, MtG did not kill minis.
Clix did not kill minis.
D&D is still hear (but all my 3.5 stuff may soon be worthless with 4.0 )
GW is still the game to play at most cons despite several attempts by other decent games (Warmachine, Warlord, etc.)
There still is not a good wild west game.
Garage shops are still cranking out the best manga resins.
I still have a large box full of unpainted minis (lots of it real lead).

Stay the course.

As for continuing, some of you all have/having kids right? Something tells me that kids will pick up the habit of their parents. So go forth, and multiple, sayith the Great Geek God! :D

Ugh. I\'ve had to spend about the same amount on my son\'s stuff (5 years old) as my own. Luckily, Crayola makes a washable paint, so he can keep repainting his stuff. Which is good since a Eldar takes him about 30 seconds to paint.

But now his big thing is Heroscape. He bought the Marvel Superheros version over Christmas and insists on playing at least once a day. Drives me a bit crazy. We\'ve enlisted all of his Toy Story figurines, which are only a little too big. Plus, all of his Eldar, skeletons, and other minis have made the game. Nothing quite like Captain America beating the snot out of Woody and a snakeman in the same round.

So take heart pessimists! The young are learning to game without a monitor!

I have no glue where the mini industry will be in 10 years, but I think it will be still alive. Since I\'m an optimist I think there will be great Tabletop battles ahead!!

Concerning the PC Games I think it will refresh the Mini-gaming painting scene (Thinking of Warhammer Online...).
In fact the PC-Game DOW got me back to painting my 40K Minis again! Also many of my friends got interested in the industry and said something like:
\"Woah, cool! There are nice minis of my favourite PC-Unit.\"
A friend of mine got his a mini of his fav army Tau in his DOW colours as brithday present from me...he loves it and right now it stands in front of his working place (at a managment company) even making more advertisment for this scene...

One wish for the future: I\'D love to see more Minigaming-systems not relating on big armies, but on small warbands. So we can paint about 5 great Minis with love and actually can start playing XD.

More Mordheim!!!.....Less Apocalypse!!

Oh and on the thing on the point of prepainted minis. Actually I\'m not worried about it from a painting point of view (*rattle* *rattle* pfffft..pfffft. There\'s the base coat...).

I\'m rather worried about the idea that somewhere in a poor country people (kids?) are sitting in a factory with bad working conditions putting some toxic paints on little minis for us rich people to play with them...that\'s a sad view. And that\'s why I think I will not buy one of those minis...

Most people in the West have more free time than ever before. Which is why all manner of hobbies and crafts are expanding.

I wonder if we haven\'t stumbled on something here.
Mini Painters Anom. A 12 step program for those who have way to much unpainted lead.

Airhead, have you tried Gutshot by Hawgleg Publishing?

It isn\'t too shabby at all for a Wild West mini game.

As far as the hobby goes, some things may change, but in the past 20 years it has only been changing for the better. :)

Golden Demon will be dominated by fanboys who all paint like Bragon (thanks to his international tours). The majority of top painters we know and love now will either have abandoned competition entirely or exclusively attend events like EuroMilitaire, Ravage, and World Expo.

As for gaming, video games have never been nearly as enticing (personally) when put next to painting or gaming, so we can hope other gamers will stay loyal and true.

it will be interesting to see the impact on GD the book release will have...

what book is this?

Does anyone know Derek Shubert\'s CMON name?

Thanks

Did you try DKS?
