Where to buy Brushes (uk)

Hi, a couple of months ago someone asked this question, and someone replied by posting a link to a woman who sells brushes online (I think it was a u.k. website) They were sable, and very reasonably priced.

(If you know another source for good model painting brushes in the UK hit me with it)

If anyone knows the website I mean please could they post a link, I added it to favourites, but FF recently decided to wipe all of mine :S

(Also What size of brushes would people reccommend if they post a link) I\'m quite happy with any brush as long as its tip stays pointy, I\'ve been recommended some windsor and newton ones, but they\'re about £8.00 each, and I really can\'t afford to spend that much as a student.

I\'m not particularly heavy on brushes, but I\'d love any which kept their shape better than the current ones I use from my local model shop, stray hairs really annoy me!

Hate to sound like a fanboy, but honestly I only use GW brushes and have never had a problem with em. Maybe it\'s my obsessive brush licking habits, or my brush soap from the art store. They seem to last long considering the amount of painting I do, and manage to keep a good point.

Basecoat Brush, Standard Brush, Fine Detail Brush are the sizes I regularly use. I like to pick up the 3-brush pack (has a small drybrush, standard, and fine detail for $1 more than the cost of 2 brushes) and then pick up a Basecoat Brush on it\'s own.

Well I have to point out that £8.00 in a brush is an investment not an expense.
I\'ve Winsor & Newton series 7\'s which are pushing 20 years old and are still in good shape.

Ken Bromley sells W&N series 7\'s and for £17.60 you can get a Size 1, 0 & 00 Here
Or even cheaper versions \"Water colour brushes\" Here

Taking care of your brushes will make them last, use brush soap or even decent shampoo to clean them and they will last.

Very good prices and excellent quality.

I can second the quality of rosemary and co, in fact I have got to do a restock soon as the ones I have are now starting to wear a bit.

I\'m also a fan of GW brushes (I\'ve heard that they\'re manufactured by W&N?), unfortunately I\'m in the country, and but having just bought myself an entire dogs of war army I\'ve really got to be very careful with my money I\'ve earned over the summer, as I\'m going back to uni in a few days, so i didn\'t want to pay any p&p charges.

If I\'m very frugal in the near future I may treat myself to on of the W&N 7series, as they sound pretty superb, given that DR has owned one for as long as I\'ve been alive!

Another quick question, what size/type of the rosmary brushes would you say equates to a GW Fine detail/standard?

(My favourite GW brush is actually the one which comes with the paintset - the \"starter brush\", it\'s shorter than the standard, and is really nice and controlable, however with this being the first brush I owned I literally learned using it, so it died due to my novice skills ) - If there\'s a brush like that but better anywhere - obviously with a beautiful point then I\'d be sold for life

I also love the starter brush! Too bad they don\'t sell it on it\'s own. I don\'t want to have to pay $22 for a paint set just to get one.

Rosemary and co all the way now for me. since I tried them I ain\'t looked back.. consistently better quality than W&N and only between £1.80 and £3.50 each.....

series 99 and series 33 are the two you want..

series 99 are the cheaper .. size 0 is £1.56 size 1 £1.64

series 33
size 0 £2.90 size 1 £2.95

both are excellent quality and the more you use them the better they get.. also the size 2\'s are a largish brush but hold a beautiful point and are probably the best freehand brush I have found on the market... and I\'ve tried just about all of \'em...

I got a set of three w&n brushes from WHsmiths(albeit the value sable ones) but so far they have held up very well amd seem to have kept a point well and for £3.00, who is going to complain?

gw\'s master brush set is made by W+N, not their normal brushes.

W+N brushes do not have the quality control they once had and as such i won\'t buy them any more.
As i paint full time i use raphael 8404, they are very hard wearing with excellent points (slightly longer hair length than W+N 7\'s but they suit my me much better)

i do intend on trying rosemaries eventualy, i just have to wait until my 8404\'s need replacing (and that should be a while)

Yeah but he\'s only painted 7 models with it...lollol

nearest to the standard by the way is size 1 or 2 series 33........

I\'ll add my vote for Rosemary & Co. They are every time as good as W&N7, and as Rob said, much more consistent in quality, whereas W&N have become a lot more hit or miss lately.

I\'ve become a convert to the Series 7s. I honestly did not think that £8 for a brush could be justified, but they are without doubt the best things I\'ve ever used, and the detail you can get with them (steady hand not included I\'m afraid!) is amazing.

So yes, they\'re expensive, but as Dragonreach said - it\'s an investment and pays off in the long run.

Here\'s an irony..... I\'ve finally had to Retire a W&N series 7 yesterday.
Can\'t tell what size it was as the gold lettering has long since rubbed off (I suspect it was a size 1), but even after several post paint washings last night it still has split into a \"Fish Tail\".
Think I might have had my money\'s worth out of it by now.

Series 7 every time guys. Did you know Queen Victoria ordered these brushes to be made in her favorite size (7) in 1866, and theyve been made ever since!! As for hit and miss? ive never known anything but perfection from them, the larger brushes even have a card with them telling you which person made that particular brush!! The snap and flow are incredible, honestly guys just give em a try you will not be dissapointed. Yeah they are expensive, and obviosly at £160, you wouldnt use size 10 to drybrush but as Dragonsreach says they are an investment that will last for years to come if looked after. Peace.
