i dont know how to call them so i couldnt search for it properly.
stand, platform, podium?
what are these?
im quite sure that they are not crafted entirely for the use with miniatures
in which stores i can get them and how much do they cost? or are they, by any chance, custom build?

Ah, you mean the plynth?
I made my own a couple of weeks ago with a router and some hardwood:

However, you can get these in some art stores, I\'ve seen people mention micheals in usa. But a member of this board, Klute makes some and was sellings a lot of them on the trading post.

You may want to lookk in a store that sells ornaments you know china dolls and cottages and things like that. You can very often get plynths from places like that. I have bought a few over the years from places like that.
Also hobby stores like Hobbycraft will do things that are similar and you just paint or stain them to your desired finished effect.
Another source of plynths cand be wargames conventions, very often you get manufacturers attend these events.
And finally you could always try Cmon\'s very own klute, I got a very nice plynth from him which set off my Wolfen Prowler just perfect.
Hope you don\'t mind the plug Mark.

Trophy shops are good too.

Edit: Tim already beat me to it....hehe

You can custom build your own bases but you need to buy some serious equipment, especially for the round bases, the base pictured looks as though it has be made on a wood working lathe, and I dont think those are cheap, would\'nt mind getting one though I could knock up some candle stick holders for christmas then :D

General remarks on plynths and other wooden bases, large figure modelers have used them for a very longtime already and you can buy all kinds of bases at shows and figure modeling stores. Another place where you can sometimes usefull wooden bases are hobby stores where they sell wood stuff. Some of the wooden wheels just have the right size and shape to work as a base. An of course you can see if you can combine a few bases together. :)

try trophy shops, as you can sometimes find plinths in there, or good old little model shops, that have always been there, can sometimes have them, I know one that does neways. good luck in finding your plinth. :D
