If you\'re posting here, I assume your main use would be photographing your miniatures.
What I feel about the two of them...
Canon A640:
pros: - seems to have good macro abilities
- cheaper than the other one
- possible tele and wide angle converters
- rather low distortions
- seems to have good high ISO (very usable up to ISO 400)
- good resolution - although it\'s very unlikely you\'ll use the full 10 megapixels. 6 is enough unlike you wish to print very large.
cons:
- see review, it seems to have rather few of them
Canon S3 IS:
pros: - true image stabilizer (optical one), works well
- huge zoom, luminous
- 2.3 fps continuous shooting
- okay distortions (even very low given the zoom range)
- great ISO performance (I\'d say usable up to ISO 800 - maybe that level too noisy though, needs real-life tests)
cons : see review well.
Which one would I take?
Well, S3 IS looks better to me. Because it seems to be more versatile. However, I have a coolpix 5700 which is a camera that seems to be quite similar to it. Image quality is good, and largely enough for miniature pictures.
However, if you wish a wider use, it can\'t compete with a DSLR (I also own a Nikon D80) and Nikon has recently produced two very \"cheap\" models that are really a stpe up from point and shoots, the D40 and D40x (D40: 599 US$ with kit lens, that\'s rather good as well).
I you haven\'t done it already, I\'d really advise you to look up these models. Much more versatile, much better image quality. It\'s really a step up from point and shoots... But that\'s more expensive...

I just purchased a Sony Cybershot DSC-h2 which is supposed to be identical to the Canon..and 100 dollars cheaper.. You might want to look into it.. I\'m still testing and playing with it..so I won\'t post pics with wierd quality as it will taint the effectiveness of the camera.
