Which is the correct order?

Recently, I began practicing again for a contest and I wondered, ehat is the best order of Metal/Skin/Clothing? I know if it\'s mostly metal then Metal comes first, then clothing, then skin and if it it all or mostly skin, metal comes lat, but I have painted the skin on this witch elf beutifully, but now I need to paint the metal and clothes, and I don\'t think I can stop any other getting on it. So here\'s my question: dark color and metal first, then light colors, or light color, then dark, then try to clean up? Thanks.

Order

In my experience the best way to paint is to go from the inside of the minature out. Skin first, clothing, armor, etc...

I\'ve found it easiest to do messy techniques first -- like Drybrushing -- and then go out from the hardest to reach areas out. I drybrush the ground/base and fur first, and then paint the rest, typically doing the lighter things first and finishing up with the darkest stuff.

I\'ve also started to superglue my minis to old soda bottle tops -- they\'re perfect size for 25mm->30mm figures, act as a great holder, and they snap off quickly when I\'m done.

Order of painting

I agree with Temperence, start with the inside and move outward. I also find it helps to do the face first; it kinda sets the personality of the piece and gives me motivation to see it finished!

I always try to paint the skin first, but it follows the same law as eating spaghetti and wearing a light-colored shirt. No matter how careful you are, you\'re still going to make a mess..

Yep...

I own many Ral Partha boxed sets, all of which contain a \"How to paint\" pamphlet. They all suggest the skin first and work out from there. I do the first dark coat on everything flesh, armor, weapons, jewelry, etc... The only thing that I do all the way right off the bat is the eyes. I think THAT is the most important part of the mini\'s personality. My two cents...

if you have done the skin already then mayby you could seal it and use masking fluid.

don\'t leave masking fluid on for very long though.

Note to everyone: Look at the date on this thread, it\'s been a while. back then my primary technique was drybrushing, but now that I\'ve gotten a lot cleaner, I don\'t think dredging up this topic again does any good. Let sleeping threads lie, I say.. :p

Sorry about that...

I was just scanning the forums when I decided to reply. I figured that Chris had evolved beyond this problem I just wanted to add my two cents, I figure there are more people searching the forums for answers.
