Which ones?

Hi,

I am taking up the hobby again after a very long break (5 kids!!!) and want to start off on the best footing.

With that in mind, I want to ditch all of my Games Workshop paints and start replacing them with Vallejo.

What would you guys recommend as an essential list of colours for me to begin with?

Many thanks.

That\'ll will to an enormous degree depend on what you\'re going to want to paint and, at the risk of sounding snotty, what color you\'re going to want it. What are you interested in painting?

You\'ll need a variety of flesh tones. Browns, khakis, and low-saturation green/blues are hugely useful. Metallics if you don\'t want to do NMM. The rest... kinda your call.

Out of curiosity, though. Why ditch the GW stuff?

There\'s no reason to ditch the GW stuff, they are good paints, plus they make some unique colours. I suggest picking up some V\'s and trying them out first. Not everyone is a fan. I personally find some of them separate and some require way too much watering down to use, others are great, pretty much like any line of paint.

i agree with the others - i wouldn\'t ditch them all. even if you prefer the vallejos, you can always use the gw for basing and terrain etc.

i personally like the different greys. the sea greys and blue greys are nice. they are the main ones i use. also use the ivory and offwhite for highlighting. get them first and see how you go. if you are buying their metallics, check them out first if you can, rather than buying them online as i find them to be rather hit and miss, sometimes they grains aren\'t fine enough - the best silver i have is an old citadel mithril

Thanks for the replies guys!!

See what you mean about the Games Workshop paints, makes sense.

If I was to try, say Vallejo, do you think it would be better just to buy one of the starter sets or buy separates?

Thanks again.

I would go with separates -

Also, I would start with stuff you know you are about to use up in the GW\'s and do a paint comparison between it and the Vallejo\'s.

But I\'m a bit strange that way.

I hear ya. I have some colors that haven\'t been cracked in years. You never know when you might need just a hint of something or another, though. And sometimes starting a new project will resurrect colors you didn\'t think you\'d use again.

Modelers mantra... \'Keep EVERYthing!\'.

Oh yeah... I\'d just pick up individuals as well. I\'d rather pick a project and buy the colors I want to use rather than buy some starter set and have those colors dictate how I painted the mini.

Just my thought on that, though.

There are some very good tips here.
I\'d suggest that there are some colours which should be in every painters rack:-
Vallejo Ivory the number one paint I use which ends up being used on every mini I paint.
Neutral Grey
Black Glaze, probably the greatest discovery I have ever made by chance. Tones down everything to give colours an aged feel, and really helps to work metals (yes I still used them) to a worn look with out too much effort.
White Glaze; keep a brush specifically for this paint. Great for brightening all light colours Yellows as well as Whites. Does some good things to skin tones as well, not to mention NMM
Flat Earth Nice good neutral brown.
German Camoflage Black Brown
Hull RedReally dark red
Transparent Red
