which paint is better??

Ok so I have been Painting off an\' on now for a while. I started on GW paints, never again will I buy them, then I went on to the crappy craft store paints which was actually better then GW. but they suck, now I am on Valajo (sp??) which I love but I cant spend 3.50 on paints. Is there a happy medium??

us ol\' 30 somethings paint by crushing the pigment on a mortar and pistol for six hours in the blustery cold while going up hill both ways to gw headquarters.

actually i prefer gw but water down about every one of their colors. i do not like vallejo and am probably in the majority.. some people happen to swear up and down that reaper paints are good. although of late i have had some good success with p3 paints from privateer. they just need to get some more colors. other than that i think thats all i got.:D

GW Metallics are nice. Well, their whole range is pretty decent. Same can be said for most paint lines, I think.
I use Vallejo Game colors (got the case for mah birthday last year) and the only colors I don\'t care for are the metallics. They tend to seperate really quickly. My bottle of Gunmetal goes on as bright as Truesilver, too. Not the dark silver it\'s supposed to be.
Maybe that\'s something I\'m doing, but I can only shake \'em for so long...

Reaper Master Series (in the dropper bottles) are really nice. I\'ve had nothing but good luck with \'em. Their Pro Paints (in the screw-top bottles) are pretty decent too. Good coverage on both.

Heard nothin\' but good about P3 paints, also, and once their line expands, I\'ll probably get my hands on some to try out.

If yer lookin\' for cheap paints, you\'re going to get cheap paints. I wouldn\'t recommend buying a paint just because it\'s $1.00 cheaper. Remember, cheaper \"tends\" to mean lower quality (not always, mind) and it will show on your mini.

I dont want cheap quailty, I just dont want to get stuck in the habit of using crapy paint if there is something better out there for cheaper.... and ... gw is the devil... :D

They take some getting used to but I swear by vallejo model color paints, they have smooth coverage, nice selection and the dropper bottles are great for doing mixes.

Personally i don\'t think GW paint is crappy, i reckon its one of the best, them and VMC, which i use both of simultaniously. (SP?)

What is it that you don\'t like about GW paints?

I was lucky enough to get a set of P3 paints. They are great! I\'ve used GW and VMC and still do. The P3 are my favorites of the three as far as consistency and coverage go. The colors are very strong so it does take a bit of getting used to. For example if you water down the P3 red to make a wash it will still have way more pigment than a comperable GW color. Good stuff, check them out.

I\'ve long used GW paints and never had a problem with them, they are great paints. I also have been using P3 paints lately, and really like the results there as well, they are at least comparable if not better. Mostly I like them because the different colors give different hues to my minis rather than the same old variations I\'ve gotten used to from the GW colors. It\'s amazing even a slightly different formulation can really create a different looking color on the figure itself.

Bottom line, you really should not have any trouble from GW, P3, Vallejo, Reaper paints, they\'re all quality.

I have been very happy with my Reaper Master Series Paints. The line is generally quite good though there are a few colors with clumping/thickening issues (most of which seemed to have been resolved).

I also recently picked up a few Derivan MiNiS paints. They are also quite good too, come in a very nice dropper-screw top bottle, and come in a larger bottle than other mini paints. Unfortunately, finding them outside of Australia is pretty difficult. I do like the finish and coverage of the paints though.

I have the P3 paints (from Privateer Press), but I haven\'t tried them yet.

What I don\'t like about them is that every paint I bought has dried up with in 2 months, every time I buy spray primer its grainy, and the minis are over priced and ugly (well most of them). And the guys that work there are creepy :) I know thats not the same for alot but some force out there says no to me.

Are you painting straight from the pot? Leaving them open whilst painting? These helps them dry up quicker.

Iv never had a problem with the spray, just need to shake it long enough. Could be your weather in the area, i know other people have problems with that.

And the other stuff....well we\'ll just leave that for another thread, another time..:drunk:

I use vallejo mainly, but recently picked up a cygnar set of the P3 line. Man, do these paints blend easily. I will probably get some more p3 when the full line comes out.

I think GW are pretty good too. Once they fixed the terrible lid problem they had...

On the other hand I HATE Vallejo \'Model Color\'. The paint quality isn\'t bad, but for some reason the paint dries so I can\'t twist the lids off, it also dries in the nozzle so it doesn\'t come out, and occassionally the entire nozzle pops off to pour paint everywhere.

I\'ve tried some of the reapers paint, and liked it ok.

i luv buying new stuff so i use Vallejo Model colour, mainly for the range they offer. I did not have bad experiences with GW colours,started out with them and still use their metallics, 2 years into acrylics.On handling:Tried putting the colour containers upside down?Put in some water as well,1ccm/ml every month
Don\'t know the rest of the aforementioned brands.

That could be part of the problem.
If you pour out of a screw-on top, you are very likely to get paint on the rim or in the threads.
If you get paint on the rim or in the threads, the lid won\'t close all the way and the paint will dry out - and it may dry the lid so tight to the pot you need tools to open it.
I have transfered all my GW paint to dropper bottles.

I have occasionally had the problem supervike mentions of paint clogging the tip of the dropper bottle (any brand - particularly with metalic paints), but I keep a pin with my paints and just jam it in and pull it back out and voila, works like new.

Inks now... they seriously coat the threads of the bottle and dry out and make a nasty mess.

I think asking this question on this board will get you an answer of \"all of them!\" I really doubt there are many painters here who use one brand entirely. I use mostly Vallejo Game, but I also have some Model color, and a few Reapers. I think GW metallics are great, and I also have a few older colors in screw lids I still use, and some of the new colors in the flip-tops. I have a few colors of Tamiya, though I don\'t use them much. There arent any P3 dealers in the area, so unfortunately I haven\'t tried any, but when I find some I will.

I\'d totally recommend Vallejo over GW in most cases, but the Reaper stuff is nice too. It all depends on what colors you need. Don\'t limit yourself, and don\'t be afraid to try something new.

Paints

Well i Mainly use GW but i have user VGC, these are both great paints and mix well together,

Errr dont pour you paints dude!!!

If you are mixing, dip the brush it may take longer about a couple of seconds but you wont waste as much paint and it wont dry out as quick,

i like to mix my paints on a tile, i know this is what everyone does but i thought id mention it,

As to your comment about the GW minis and Staff, i happen to think you are wrong,(this is just and opinion)

If it was not for the enthusiam of the GW staff at Staines and Windsor i would never have got so indepth into this hobby, (damn them! :)) and not getting indepth would have meant i would not have had to deal with such delight full people as everyone here, and in a business capacity with Orkydave (That guy rocks........no he really does...)

Well thats my comment, please do not take offense, im not saying you are wrong this is just my personal opinion,
