Which Resin?

I'd like to get some good quality pouring resin for a base I'm doing. Can anyone recommend any brands in particular as being good for our purposes?

I have used this:

Because it easily sandable, it might be a touch soft for making bases.

Alumlite is a brand used by Shepard Paine in his book Building and Painting Scale Figures:

Roninjr does a bit of casting. You might send him a pm and ask what he uses. He sent me some samples made from different resins, and they seemed a bit more durable than the micromark resin.

Hmm, yeh I've been looking at that but people seem to get really great effects using the two part mix stuff that comes out crystal clear. Thanks anyway though.

Castin'Craft Clear Casting Resin is one good option, or there's Environmental Technology's EasyCast. Both easy to find and forgiving in terms of mixing.

ETI also make EnviroTex Lite which you might have heard of, although it's intended to be a pour-on bartop coating it can be used for thinner castings and some people have used it for water effects. It's not really suited to multiple pours though, so if you think you might have to build up thickness in layers probably best to go with something else.

Here in Australia you can get stuff from most hardwares (Bunnings usually stock it) and some craft shops called Clear Gloss, sometime Glass Coat, which is the same thing as EnviroTex Lite, I have been using it to do water effects for a couple of years now and it is great, and what's more it comes in different sizes, I've 250mL & 1L kits so you can easily and affordably even do rivers and ponds and the like on tables.

I have tried the Woodland Scenics Realistic Water which was too expensive and gave a mediocre result, and took ages to do (several layers with a days drying time each) and it shrinks when it sets, making the water not set level, and the Citadel Water Effects was utter crud that I wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy.

Ebay is a good shout. I got a bunch of RTV silicone and 2 pack resin, going to try out making molds and casting bits when i convert, so i can make multiples etc.

Not too expensive and a lot of choice from about 100ml to 1lr etc
