Hey man...lookin good. You are definitely improving and fast! Always nice lol As for the thinner coats, I go with really thin glazes for my painting, but take a bit of the excess off the brush with a napkin so I don't have a pooling effect. It helps with the transitions, I think at least. You may want to try that and see how it goes for you. Other than that, good work and happy painting :)

I agree to this, it helps a lot to unload the brush, perhaps more then one time before painting the figure try to unload your brush a couple of times after you have taken colour unto it and see how many times you can do it until the brush is getting "empty" it gives you some feel of how "thin" you can get a colour and still be able to paint with it.

Wow, I can’t believe it’s been three months since my last update here. I have been busy with a lot of things, but I’ve managed to get some painting time in there as well. Let’s see… I finished the Frog Dragon Slayer. Here it is:

Next I worked the Gunslinger that I had already based. There is not that much to say about it. I wasn’t sure how to handle the shading in his face, since he’s wearing a hat. I tried making the top part of his face darker, as shadow, but that just looked odd, so in the end I painted the face without a whole lot of shading. I finished up with a coat of matte varnish, which messed me up a little bit, as the varnish pooled in some spots and created white chalky areas. Next time I need to remember to use the varnish fresh out of the bottle, and not let it sit on my palette like I did this time. But in some ways those light spots added a little more dimension to the figure.

After fiddling with the gunslinger, I decided I wanted to go back to something slightly larger again, and I decided to tackle the ‘elf archer’ from Andrea. It came in 9 pieces, which is the most I have seen so far. The assembly was not too bad, but I had to spend a lot of time on prep work! Maybe the reason I found this in the store even though it has been discontinued from the manufacturer is that this was a poor copy of it. Especially the robe had a lot of extra metal filling up the folds, that I had to cut, scrape and file away. I spent several hours just prepping this figure. Here’s the pieces half-way through assembly.

Most of it came together well, but the robe did not fit very well on the shoulders. Still, nothing a bit of putty couldn’t fix. I used a thin metal wire for the bow string, which worked out pretty well, though it’s not completely straight.

The local modeling and miniature painting society was having an expo so I decided to go, and entered a few of my painted figures in their contest. My ‘elf archer’ got a silver medal, so I am happy about that! The event in itself was interesting (thought it was dragged out a little bit too long imho) and it was great to be able to see some beautiful paint jobs up close and in person. Sometimes it is hard to even judge when looking at a picture on the computer, as it looks almost too perfect to be a picture. On some of these figures I couldn’t see a single brush stroke even after careful scrutiny. So I know I can still improve my painting a lot!

There were some vendors at the expo, and I got several more things to work on:
Andrea Miniatures – ‘The Untamed’. This is Aragorn from LOTR. This one is marked as discontinued on their website, so I thought I’d better get it when I could.
Andrea Miniatures – ‘The Name of the Rose’. This is Sean Connery from that film. This box was missing one small piece, but I got it for about half price, so that was a good deal.
I also ended up winning several things at the expo raffle, so now I have a ton of things to work on.
Andrea Miniatures – ‘The volunteer’. I think this is supposed to be Mel Gibson from The Patriot.
Moebius Models – Bela Lugosi as Broadway’s Dracula Deluxe Model kit. This is a bit bigger scale – 1/8[SUP]th[/SUP], but it looks like fun, and will be a change from the tiny ones. Since this is a plastic assembly kit it will also require a lot more time to put together
Moebius Models – The Munsters House. This a house in HO scale. This is a bit further down of my list of stuff to work on.

There, that’s that puts me almost up to date. Except for the 1/72 scale plastic figures I have started on, and the diorama I am planning, but I’ll put that in a separate post ;)

Thank you! The results are in and it appears my current skill level, by CMON standards, is around 6. Not too shabby I guess, and it does give me plenty of room for improvement ;)
I suppose the only alarming part is that the Frog Dragon Slayer is currently ranked highest of the three pictures I posted at 6.1. Since that’s the one I completed first, I seem to be
regressing…

As I mentioned, I started a little on some 1/72 scale soldiers for a planned diorama. It’s a little different, as they don’t seem to have quite the same level of details,
but it’s fun with some variety. It seems these kind of figures might be outside the scope of this site, or at least I don’t see much discussion or pictures.
So far I’ve completed a soldier, cannon and a horse.

I have also started some work on the Moebius model that I won. Since this is 1/8[SUP]th[/SUP] scale it’s quite a bit bigger. Again, I don’t see much about them here – I guess they are not technically a ‘mini’ any more at that scale. In either case, I have built both of the figures, but not the backdrop. The building was more work than I had expected, and quite a bit harder. It definitely brought back memories of building model airplanes back when I was 10. I had thought that with today’s superglue it would be so much easier, but I still had the same problem of pressing glued parts together till my knuckles turned white, only to have them fall apart as soon as I let go. But after a couple of tubes of superglue and several hours I had something somewhat resembling Dracula and his victim. I used green stuff to fill in the gaps. I think I need to get a different kind of epoxy if I ever work on this kind of model again. The green stuff just doesn’t sand very well. I have put some basic coat on Dracula and just a coat of primer on the victim.

In addition I have started another of the Andrea miniatures. I decided to work on the ‘Old Fiddler’. I am just beginning, but here’s my progress so far.

I have cleaned the pieces. This kit was much cleaner and neater than the Elf Archer one. There wasn’t that much prep work to do.

I have put some of the parts together, and started painting the fiddle.

Very nice work. With the gs you could smooth it out after sanding with a thin brushing of nail polish remover. Just keep it thin so you don't melt the plastic or resin mini. In the future I would recommend aves apoxie sculpt. I just started to use that stuff and its fantastic. Easy to mix easy to work dries rock hard too so it's good for sanding (wear a mask when sanding though).

What are you planning for the diorama? It would be nice to see some more historical type wips around here.

Do not get to excited about the scoring. I suspect your frog gained an extra point from the wimsical nature and the fact he isn't the 1000th copy of the same mini posted to the gallery.

You should include a shot of the 1/72 minis next to a space marine for scale. I doubt a lot of people get just how small those things are! Nice work on them BTW :)
