Who exactly are these guys?

Ultramarines?

I have to say they look very, very cool, but as I recall, Ultramarines were yellow and blue, not gold. And they didn\'t have masks on their helmets like that. Yet they have the Ultramarine symbol on their armor. Are they some kind of special guard? I don\'t actually play 40k, so I\'m not really clear on all the chapters there may be, or how they\'re organized... anyways, they look so awesome that I want to convert my recently purchased SMs to look like this. Thanks in advance!

I believe those are straight up Ultramarines - that appears to be Marneus Calegar (sp?) in the center.

Well my young Padawan you have obviously missed the relaunch of the 40K rules and the forthcoming update to the Space Marine Codex.
Ultramarines get a slight colour reworking, just to cause additional sales.

I think since it is Marneus Calgar, the other marines are veteran bodyguards in artificer armour.

I could well be mistaken, but that looks very similar to an image I have seen of the demise of Napoleon\'s elite guards at the battle of Waterloo.

I think one of the historical manufacturers even released a diorama..

Yeah. They redesigned the Space marine\'s armour. They also redesigned the terminatoers. They aren\'t so stiff.

but I\'ve always thouh they were big suits of armour. I don\'t see anyone doing yoga position in them.lol

I just assumed they were some Ultramarine version of an Honor Guard. Sort of like the Blood Angels have.

Definitive answer

The image is the front cover for the new Codex: Space Marines, due out in November and already available on advance order from the US but, for some odd reason, not in the UK (grrr!).

The central figure is Marneus Calgar, Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, and the wing-faced chappies around him are his Honour Guard.

Space Marines are being revisited in the lastest edition, emphasizing their monk-crusader-templar nature over their elite-forces-of-the-Imperium nature, so expect to see more armour variations, purity seals, inscriptions etc etc. The new artwork is exceptionally cool IMHO, and the Kopinski Bros are demi-gods.

In the new company guide, the shoulder rims for 2nd and 6th companys have been made more metallic. Also it features command squads with gold trim to seperate them from the veterans white.

But i\'m most happy that finally there will be Lightning claws for power armoured marines, having to convert all the terminator ones could get to be a pain.
