who is the best?

Ok, this is a question I carry around with me for a long time. I\'m a dedicated GW fan I since I\'m reading the White Dwarf, I always compare the sculpt- and paintjobs of GW-employees. Who makes the best models? who is the best with the brush?
And is reponsible for the ugliest models ever produced?

I start: my personal favourites are
- Brian Nelson for his orcs (all the other sculptors just copy his designs for orcs and mess it up, look at the anti-tank unit for the space orcs (buechsenknackas on German(such a funny language, I know)))and Archaon od course,
- Juan Diaz for the 40k Inquisitor models and the Emperor\'s Champion
- Martin Footit (he just gets better and better...)
- and of course Tammy Haye! but that judgement is maybe influenced by her presence on this site...

The worst:
- Mark Bedford for his Hive Tyrant and his poor imitations of Brian\'s orcs (to his defence, everybody has a bad job who has to do models for a range if he\'s not the main sculptor)
- Aly Morrison, he used to be so good, but look at his 40k Inquisitor models!
- Keith Roberts for his colour scheme of Archaon and the Dark Eldar (wait.. wasn\'t that developed with joe hill 1?)

remeber, these are just personal preferences. share with the community what you never dared to say before!

I really don\'t know much about the different sculptors and nothing about the painters so not much that I can say. The only painter I ever noticed was juan diaz so I guess that means he made a good impression on me.

Brian Nelson also for his Orcs, they\'re just great !

Juan Diaz for his Emperors Champion, Inquisitors and Daemonhunters minis and Kasrkin Sargeant, his faces look like battleworn, old soldiers... full of character.

And Jes Goodwin for almost everything he has done. Typhus is great, and I just really like the chap :)

But I don\'t know about any bad ones, I don\'t like calling people bad although they\'re better than you.

I haven\'t really read WD in eons, but I do remember some favorites.

I love pretty much anything by Jes Goodwin. His eldar were great, and IIRC he did the Sisters of Battle too which I really liked.

Chris Fitzpatrick :p yeah, he doesn\'t work there anmore :(

Mike McVey: pieces I remember are his wood elf diorama and one with an eldar exodite on a dinosaur thingy

Least favorite:

Whoever sculpted the original for those dreadful plastic wood elf archers (I can\'t recall definately and I don\'t want to be wrong :p)

Which elves?

Yeah, I am a little old school. I still like the oldies like John Blanche, and Mike Mcvey. Ali and Trish Morrison, Kev White.....

Nadine, which elves are you talking about, the more \'current\' plastic ones are dreadful, but there are some older plastic ones that are actually pretty cool. (I think they were sold in a 60 pack of 6 different armies...Orc, Skaven, Dark Elves, Dwarves, Something else, and the cool elven archers...)

hahahahahaha, that\'s so mean to say about Keith!!! lol.....sorry....my faves:

Brian, not for his orcs, but his chaos warriors, ogres:)P), archaon, fellowship of the rig.....etcetcetc

Juan, but I\'m biased since he\'s a good mate of mine, but he\'s a top sculptor with real heart for it.

alex Headstrom since he\'s...well, a great sculptor
, and also one of the few that has really innovative ideas.

Also Martin footitt and Seb Perbet for both their painting and sculpting, and Neil Green for his painting.....

Oh, and to get back to Keith...if YOU can pain Archeon in three working days and have it look like that, THEN you have a right to say that. I mean, you can say...\'it\'s crap, doesn\'t look as good blablabla\', but the speed that the EM team need to work at is something most of the people in the painting world cannot top, that\'s why they\'re so good, they get results in a fraction of the time everybody else does..... you try painting 20 models week to that standard!

And they\'re not responsable for the colour schemes, they get told what to paint and how and which colour you know...by managers....

oh dear, i\'m ranting...sorry! ;)

i was always wondering why all those HM painters who were suposed to be top notch never painted to the stantard I\'ve been seeing on this site. I guess that time restriction explains a lot of it. Not to say that they\'re not well painted, better then I could ever do, but I always get the feeling it could be better.

true frenchkid, it\'s actually the case they get told off for doing spiffy paintjobs sometimes because there\'s no time for it....the downside of being a professional figure painter. Know this, any songle one of them, past and present, can win a slayer sword if they really put their minds to it....that\'s what i keep telling myself anyways ;)(but look at matt and joe, plus the large amount of ex EM painters winning trophies all over the place....it says a lot about their quality)

Jes Goodwin

hands down... There are very few things he\'s done that I don\'t like...

Alex Hedström, partly because he\'s as good as he is, and partly because he\'s swedish...:D

I don\'t go for most of Aly Morrisons stuff though, dont know exactly why, but I think it\'s because his minis tend to be a bit \'busy\' to my eyes...

As for painters, well, I don\'t have a very good handle on them actually... Tammy Haye is, naturally, high on the list... I like her balance between realism and \"cartooniness\" (is that a word btw?)...

While on the subject of time-consuming paintjobs, I remember when the old Great Unclean One was released (the one before the current one, that is... I\'m not quite old enough to remember the first one...:D) and the guy who painted it (shame on me for not remembering his name???) apparently took 34 hours to do it in, If I remember correctly... must\'ve been a slow week otherwise...

bellieve me, you do not want to live in Nottingham....

Oy, don\'t diss my city :p

For pure talent, I\'d have to say Mike McVey. They still have some of his dioramas in WW, like the emperor and horus one, and the eldar exodite thing that was mentioned earlier.
The amazing thing is, that even though these pieces were produced like about 8 years ago, they still look fantastic. Quite a feay considering how much the miniature painting art in general has developed since then

I think that Juan Diaz is a great sculpter - his minis really seem to \'paint themselves\' so to speak - for example his daemonettes are gorgous models ( sculpted wise I mean!)

I also love chris fitzpatricks work - it is a real shame he had to go back to the US when his visa expired.

The great unclean one that I think you are talking about (seer) is the one done by dave perry. He took three weeks to paint that one as I remember. It is a shame that gw does not give its painters more freedom with their time for painting minis cos I know we would see some awsome work comming out of the studio. Some of the minis that the evey metal team produce for themselfs are stunning.

The GUO done by dave perry involved loads of shading before being re worked up through many blended layers to get the final result - dave specialised in the dark and moody paintjobs while he was at the studio and he was great at his work.

One of the most underrated painters of all that worked for GW was torben schooner. Seeing his work in person is a must if you ever get the chance. His use of colour is really vibrant and his blends on the figures were outstanding - he did many of the woodelves for the studio army whilst he was there.

oh the shame

I realised yesterday, once I\'d posted, one guy who (somewhat mysteriously) no one\'s mentioned... Ok, as far as I know he doesn\'t work for GW as such, but he has done some things for them... Three letters; SJB... Sculptor and painter rolled into one talented package... and he\'s probably a really nice guy too... Bastard...:p

@dave3555: Oh yeah, that\'s the guy, thanks... I loved his Chaos Marine Sorcerer too... Dark and moody indeed...:)

yeah...

right, I totally forgot the morrissons. although galrauch is a pain to glue (greenstuff - you saviour!) it was just outstanding. I really wondered why there weren\'t many of him out there on cMon.

and @tammy: you\'re right, I\'m probably not able do paint archaon to a standard he didi in only three days (well, at least I never tried before, I\'m still dreaming of a Chaos Zebra...), but you have to agree that the colours are , well, stupid. the mighty horse is - grey. the greatest sword - uhm, a rainbow? happyhappy!

and to ask something: what exactly happened to mike mcvey? why don\'t his models appear in the white dwarf anymore?
and again @tammy: when do these super-hyper-monster-ogres come out? they look so awesome..

something I wanted to add: if the painters would have mor time to paint the models, than - i mean, could we expect a quality as we are used to from rackham? whow, I think gw underestimates what influence they have on the gamer\'s painting styles. at the moment it seems like gw wants to make their standards more \"achievable\", whereas confrontation quality is not reachable (don\'t listen to me you demigods as cyril, thenetweb etc...). It would give you a kick to paint better, wouldn\'t it?
