isn\'t it a self image problem? thinking your fat even though your stick thin?

i haven\'t heard of a blind person with an image problem. might have other problems though but we\'re at last resort here.

Because, except in a few cases, blindness isnt a pyschological problem. When an anorexic person looks in the mirror, they dont see a stick person who is litterally starving themselves to death, they see Rick Waller. Would you poke out the eyes of a elderly person with senile dementia?

I know I shouldnt even dignifiy such a fuckwitted idea with a responce but one of my best friends was anorexic and I take it very, very seriously.

Del boy didn\'t make the trip to the states then? TV star here in the UK from various things. Only Fools and Horses and a Touch of Frost being the big two.

However also the Voice of Dangermouse which is inifnitely more important given the folks around here I imagine! Isn\'t that right penfold? ;)

i take it you\'ve completly mised the point. i also take it that you think i\'m just being silly.

nontheless i would have no problem taking extreme measures to save someone lifes if i thought it would work.

lets put this in a way some of you might understand. would you have their eyes removed if it was the source of an extreemly malignate cancer with no chance of survival once it got into the rest of the body?

feel free to exchange eyes for testes or cervix for the sake of medical likelyhood.

i\'m sorry for your friend. i\'m also sorry for my sister.

i\'m not the only one to think along these lines.

@farseerlum - The link you provided is to an older article, but it establishes that blind individuals are not immune to the self-image distortion that characterizes anorexia and other eating disorders. In other words, blinding someone with anorexia probably would not help.

Here is an abstract of a more recent article:

Authors Sharp CW.

Authors Full Name Sharp, C W.

Institution University of Edinburgh, Department of Psychiatry, Royal Edinburgh Hospital, Scotland.

Title Anorexia nervosa and depression in a woman blind since the age of nine months.

Source Canadian Journal of Psychiatry - Revue Canadienne de Psychiatrie. 38(7):469-71, 1993 Sep.

Abstract A woman aged 58 who has been blind since the age of nine months presented with major depression and a 40 year history of an eating disorder characterized by a restriction of food intake and body disparagement. The case is additional evidence that a specifically visual body image is not essential for the development of anorexia nervosa and supports the view that the concept of body image is unnecessary and unproductive in eating disorders. Greater emphasis should be placed on attitudes and feelings toward the body, and the possibility of an eating disorder should be considered in cases of older women with an atypical presentation.

Anyway, I think temporary feeding tubes would generally be considered a preferable method of addressing a severe eating disorder rather than permanent blindness. You are right in suggesting that difficult sacrifices sometimes have to be made to save someone.

i\'m not the only one to think along these lines.

This has to be one of the most idiotic things I\'ve ever seen on the internet.

Congratulations.

Anorexia and Bulimia, are rooted around the Self-Image.
Your physical eyes have very little to do with how you \"see\" yourself. Your self-image has much more to do with how you think of yourself, and in some degree other\'s opinions of you. In fact, it has been proven that someone\'s mental self picture can actually override the real physical picture that their eyes are receiving.
It\'s a skewed perception caused by the mind\'s eye, not your physical eyes.
Ripping out someones eyeballs doesn\'t exactly boost their self esteem.
It\'s a mental problem not a physical sight problem.

But then again I guess we could give them all labotomies.

And comparing a malignant cancer of the eyes to a mental disorder shows an incredible lack of understanding of the disease.

It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. Mark Twain

What\'s more sad for me is that the people around her who say they love and care for her don\'t seem to be doing anything to help her. I wouldn\'t even have let her go to this event pictured.
