I drink about 2 liters of liquids per day period.

Americans are fat cause they sit on their arses doing nothing, or doing things half-arsed just to say they did something, rather than get up and do things the right way.

Doing everything useless to excess is another reason. Eating, drinking, imbibing spirits....but that is too much drink. Probably the cup so big cause all you ever get is ice, you even that size you might have got 2 ounces of drink in with all the ice it was filled with for the $6 it probably cost.

:p

ahem, as an American teenager 6\'2 weighing 155 lb\'s living in WA state, painting houses outside brush and roll style (No cheezy paint sprayers) for 10 + hours a day, I must politely disagree that Americans (in Washington at least) are all fat, do jack diddly all day, and when we do it is half \"arsed\". polite rant over:p

I have to say that I consider this thread to be re-inforcing an unpleasant stereotype image which is innaccurate.
Probably there is as equally large a population percentage in Europe who are overweight as there is in the \'states.

Yeah, we have a range...real whoppers down to wraith\'s and everything in between. Over the last many years lost about 90 pounds, gained about 10 back (food\'s one of my \'drug\'s\' of choice). One thing I learned is that the \'normal\' sized servings are often enough for 2-3 more meals for me. When I was a big feller I simply ate like everyone else - \'normal\' portions. I was shocked to learn how little I actually NEEDED. Why I could write a diet book about it. All of .1 % of a page long.

Well I can\'t vouch for that side of the pond, but when I leave my house all I see are rejects from Sweatin to the oldies.

It ain\'t just a stereotype in some parts. :(

Had a woman last night complain to Burger King that there burgers were too fattening, as she ordered 3 whopper \"for here\".

I can\'t even eat 3 whoppers in one sitting and I have a hollow leg they say.

I can\'t eat 3 at once, because they are too dry, but with some stuff from home I have eaten 6 whoppers before. lol

(6\'3\" 190lbs BMI* says I am under weight. :( )

*Body Mass Index, I think is what that is.

to me the fat american stereotype is a load of bulls**t. The fact is theres big people where ever you go!! I know some nations have a higer percent of big people especially britain and america too but again theres big people in every country in the world.

and i dont suppose anyone could tell me how the stereotype was started ???

It\'s a stereotype for a reason:

FAT STATS...

Other countries near the top of the list have all fully embraced the shite that Maccy D\'s, Burger King et al sell.

New Zealand has the most Maccy D\'s per head of the population than any other country. Very sad.

Nice one! I was looking for statistics because it\'s a common news item but then read to the bottom of the thread. It\'s unfortunate but a fact - it isn\'t innaccurate at all. Any European who has been to the States and eaten out will be amazed at the portions and the price compared to home.

Einion may remember in Boston my \"Brie\" starter I had before my cow.....I mean steak. I expected a piece of Brie.... not the whole round thing!!!! Just for Starter.......and did I mention it was deep fried?

Yep there\'s big people wherever you go......but not as many, proportionately, as the States.

Unfortunately Dragon, it is not \"an unpleasant stereotype\" - it is well confirmed statistics. For USA in 2008 ~30% of adults were obese (about 50% overweight). For comparison in France only 10%, in Germany and UK ~20%.

The reasons are many. It is not only easily available source of carbohydrates but also permanent stress that triggers what is known as \"reward based stress eating\". The funny part about it is that attempt to impose calorie restriction might also contribute to stress;)

This thread reminds me of a funny discussion I heard in a kebab restaurant a while back.

This, let\'s say big, lady walked in. She ordered the \"King kebab\" which is the house special and has everything in it and it is huge.

So this lady makes her order; \"King kebab with extra meat, please\".

waiter asks the usual what vegetables, which sauce etc. Then \"white or red mayonnaise?\".

Lady: \"No mayonnaise please, I\'m on diet.\"

Seriously, when I\'m very, very hungry I can barely eat a normal King kebab and she eats one with extra meat. Best diet ever.

I was very overweight in high school. I\'ll admit that the road to becoming fat was very, very delicious. What had the worst effect was my asthma as a kid, since I could no longer play sports. Not to mention discovering this great hobby and many hours at game stores, cases of mountain dew and pizzas later I ballooned up to 240 pounds (5\'6\" tall). I\'ve since hit the gym and started weightlifting. Despite losing a ton of weight and being in good shape, I still love those foods. Nothing wrong with having something tasty to eat once in a while! Bad foods are fine when limited in a healthy diet. Excessive amounts cause problems. Took a while for me to reverse what I had done to myself.

I used to work at a movie theater when I was 16 or so. I remember a group of (very large) ladies who would frequent the theater a couple times a week. Sometimes they would come to my concession register and order the extra large popcorn with \"layered\" butter. Layered butter involves putting a few inches of popcorn in the bucket, then drenching with butter, followed by another few inches of popcorn, more butter, etc. Basically made it so all the popcorn was buttery versus just butter on the top. Each of them ate the whole bucket! Sometimes would come back for the free refill that came with the bucket. I\'m sure it was absolutely delicious, but that\'s totally excessive. Oh and the best part? They got DIET coke to drink! lol

I never understood diet coke..

If the reason you drink diet is because you are on a diet?? Why not just drink water?

I\'m sure its equally bad for you in other ways...

Another thing I don\'t understand is why people assume all tasty food is bad for you? Its incredebly easy to make food which is healthy and tastes awsome...

I think what it comes down to is moderation and self control... Instead of eating lots of what you like and then not being able to eat it for a stretch of time while you try anf lose weight, why not eat a normal sized portion continuously??

Being overweight truely baffles me...

To me it seems to be a convenience issue. It\'s much easier and quicker to get an unhealthy meal (fast food, frozen tv dinner, pizza, etc). Eating healthy food usually involves making it yourself, which takes up time that most Americans would rather spend watching television. Not to mention the lack of exercise.

About the diet soda, I like it because its zero calories, has caffeine and tastes good (regular soda tastes much better though). Sort of like a snack or dessert, you don\'t need it to get by, but it pleases the taste buds. I also drink a gallon of water a day.

I think that a lot of people tend to (falsely) believe that diet coke will help them lose weight simply by drinking it and changing nothing else about their daily routine. But it\'s certainly better than drinking tons of sugar found in regular soda.
