Why do you paint miniatures?

What is your primary motivation for painting miniatures? I know I paint for a variety of reasons, so just pick the one reason that fits the majority of your miniatures.

I like painting and I often give them as gifts (to players and non-players).

As to it being a relaxing hobby, only sometimes! You can see an effect in your head, but can you always get it out of your paint brush? I can\'t

I have been painting miniatures or models of one sort or another since I was about 10 or 11 years old and back then it was primarily because there was not a lot out there that I found interesting (no playstations then in fact tv pong was the in thing at the time as well as action man and meccano and lego).
Nowadays I paint to relax but as Fizl says that doesn\'t always work.
I like to take a miniand get the most out of it that I can with the skills that I have and also hopefully improve just that little bit with each mini I paint.

Don\'t think I could answer that question easily. Not really sure it\'s realaxing, quit the opposit I think.
The main reason I could think of would be that it\'s a nice challenge and the only artistique thing that I don\'t completly suck at, and I always wanted to be artistique ( I so want to draw but wouldn\'t be able to to save my life :p).
And I guess that the bunch of nice people here help me keep into it.
And the fact that I like fantasy too I guess.

OTHER.

It\'s cheaper than a Psychiatrist (only just), less messy than slitting my wrists and friendlier than a rope over the banisters.

Can you guess I\'ve had a bad day at work!

I paint because I find it fun and challenging. I do use some mini\'s for RPG\'s, and I also paint some for friends. I would agree that it may not be the most relaxing of hobbies. If I want to relax I will read a book.

I started because I was an up and comming artist in middle school and I liked painting.
Then I started to play.
Then I pledged vengence on the company that stole my money....
So here I am! :p

Acctually I just like those minis, but they only look half- good unpainted, so I just have to do it.

I\'d have to politely disagree. My Health Insurance does not seem to have a claim form for \"Large Supply of Pewter/Resin/ and or plastic miniature soldiers\". So in the long run, I should have stuck with the shrink!!lol

I started painting minis for roleplaying games, but quickly found that I wasn\'t happy with just painting for my characters. They\'re like Ruffles potato chips - you can\'t paint just one!

If I roleplayed every day of the week I for the rest of my life I couldn\'t use every mini that I\'ve bought. And I don\'t think I\'ll ever have a good reason to play a medusa or an efreet!

lol

Relaxing hobby

Honestly. I try my best not to get too hung up on the results I achieve with it. That\'s one of the reasons I have no gallery here on CMON. I paint little people to relax and , perhaps one day if I EVER finish an army, to play.
Perhaps because it is not my sole creative outlet is another reason I refue to take my mini work too seriously. THis is the one I do for fun! I also do watercolors (watercolours, to you Brits ;)) draw, do digital artwork, write, etc. I let those occasionally enrage me, and try my best to jsut enjoy the minis. :D

I have always loved fantasy and tales such as King Arthur from since I was very young, I always use to read fighting fantasy novels and then Heroquest came along (oh how I loved that game, actually I just bought it again on Ebay). I guess painting minatures was the next step from that and hopefully it will be something I can do for the rest of my live..

Well, I started out becasue it was fun. Then I thought, hey, if I can sell some on ebay maybe I don\'t have to work/study full time, and I get more time to paint. Today I mostly paint for money, but if I had more time I would definately paint just for fun as well. Why is there only 24 hours per day???
I still buy minis for myself that I never have time to paint becasue I have to paint plastic high elf archers and spearmen :flame:. But once they\'re done I might have a day off....but I won\'t complain, I get paid to do what I love the most, so I\'m happy!:D

Paint for gaming? Yeah, for the rare occassions I find people that want to play with me.

Paint to give away? True, I do that sometimes.

Paint to sell? Very few up to now, but hey, it\'s a yes nonetheless.

Paint to relax? Now however would I do that? It\'s painting after all - I suck at it and the fact that I can not achieve what I want gives me a pulse of 200. But that is actually what I like. I love to be annoyed. And painting annoys the hell out of me. If you ever see someone - through the fog, in the distant lands of Germania - fooling around with a paintbrush and a miniature and periodically (about every 49 seconds) getting up, waving his arms in utter hate of the world in general and shouting about how everyone seems to have the cerebral capacity of a concussed mungo while jumping around manically and generally making clear that he despises everything and everyone currently within earshot, well, you have probably found me. Tap yourself on the shoulder if you manage to listen to me and stay sane for more than 280 seconds, and then explain to me how you can actually claim to be sane when you are watching me from over there in Britain/America/Whereever.

I a sorry. Please allow me to sod off and take a cold shower.

I paint minis to express my artistic side. That can get kind of cramped from working in the lab all day. Since I have virtually no actual training to paint or draw (I did take a drawing course recently but find little time to practice), this hobby allows me to do something creative and produce a nice-looking result* without being Claude Monet.

well, it\'s a relaxing hobby... or is it not? sometime i think i want to break all my appartment apart... but maybe i paint minis not to break it?... well, i am also from \"beaux arts\" dunno how to translate it, it\'s an art school and always painted things, canvas, furniture, walls ;)
and minis are smaller than canvas too ;) lol

originally painting to game, but I rarely play these days, one game in the last 2 years.

Now I paint because I\'m good at it and I want to get better.

Started out to make a 100 model Warhammer 40K army... Did it.

Then i painted to make cool mini for my friends\'s armies... still doing it.

Now i\'m building up an armada of goblins... \'cause goblins are cool.

But the real reason i paint... \'cause it\'s there.;)
