Why do you paint?

I paint because I love it. It\'s relaxing and I just have to get my fix each day. Even if I didn\'t paint commissions I would still paint just as much as I currently do. :)

If I\'m honest I paint because it\'s something I\'ve found I\'m good at, and it\'s always nice to have something that you\'re good at! Simple as that!

I was a little concerned because the last few years since I got back into the hobby my one all consuming goal has been to achieve my childhood dream and win a golden demon. I was concerned as to whether I\'d still have any motivation to continue if I achieved that goal.

I achieved that goal on Sunday.... and today I\'m desperately trying to make some time to get on with a mini I had put off from earlier this year and am now DESPERATELY fired up about and want to get cracking on!

I guess finding that the goal IS achievable, has actually inspired me to do more rather than put me off. Plus, I still look at th work of some of the Spanish and French painters and get butterflies in my stomach at just how incredible they are. As long as there are still greater things to achieve, and inspirational painters on CMON creating works of pure genius... I\'ll be inspired to keep striving to better my own skills.

And, of course, I now have a great group of friends who I met through the hobby who I\'d miss like hell if I ever stopped painting.

i don\'t know why i paint...
it\'s just something i\'ve always done..

ever since i can remember, i\'ve built models, or drawn pictures, or coloured...
when i was 12 i saw some citadel minis at the model shop, back in the day when the chaos dwarves were all different and chaotic(fancy that)...since that day i was hooked...

it was never about makin\' money for years, until i got hired by mike mcvey and chris fitzpatrick , both, on the same day at gencon so. cal. in \'03...since then i haven\'t had any free time in my schedule...becomin\' a better painter suddenly became a more financial matter than a personal one..

to me it\'s always been about the sculpts...the sculptors are the guys that i admire, even more than great painters...
what i do is just paint by numbers as far as i\'m concerned...it beats the hell out of gettin\' a real job though, for sure...

cheers

I paint cause I am curious.
Curious how the mini will look like, when I am finished. ;) Most of the time I only have a vague color-concept in my mind, but don\'t have a clue how it will look on the mini. So I have to paint it... :)
Besides it is a work with a visible outcome. I work as an IT-Security Manager and most of my work is only visible in \"Powerpoint or Excel-sheets\". THIS is nor very satisfying... ;) Sometimes I NEED something in my hands which I can show to others and I can say \"I MADE THIS!\". You know what I mean? You can SEE the effort, the complexity and the time I had spent on the miniature. You create a surplus, something NEW... Thats why I love painting! :)

I need to do something creative in my spare time. If not, I\'d become a rather depressing character. Since I\'ve been painting miniatures on and off for more than twenty years it seems the most sensible thing to chose for my creative output. I\'d rather spend my time on something I\'m good at and I get more satisfaction from it.

I am not a very competitive person, so I don\'t really need competitions as motivation. I like looking at the things I do and I often get new ideas from things I\'ve done on older minis. However, competitions are fun and they do motivate me to do more involved things.

When I paint it\'s possibly the only time - other than when I\'m mixing tunes - that my mind is completely clear and focused. No other thoughts enter my mind and it\'s almost cleansing in a way. Quite meditative and paliative. It\'s one of the reasons I continue to paint.

The other is being able to look at stuff when it\'s finished. I find all the little niggles I\'ve stressed about while painting the figure disappear once they\'ve been in the cabinet for a while and I love looking at my finished minis. They\'re like little jewels - precious things!!

Unfortunately, between taking photos, editing them and getting back into drawing and painting again, minis have bitten the dust recently. Must summon up the courage to finish Yoda....

When I was in college, I practiced Karate for a couple of years. I finally left after having a conversation with my sensei. I had achieved orange belt status (three promotions), and he said that - in his opinion - there was no situation that I could not already kick and punch my way out of.

I\'ve been a instructor of Wing Chun for 20 yrs and have trained continuously for 32 yrs, and I can tell you for a fact what your sensei said is NOT TRUE. The only way a martial Artist has any edge over an opponent, is if he learns the art.
What I mean by that is continual training/ practice untill the moves and way become instinctual, and this is lost gradually if one does not train regularly and the right bits.......I\'m just saying this so you dont get yourself into a situation where your preconceptions get in the way of reality. :D

Now onto the proper question; :D
For me I paint because I love it, it is an artistic release, and one I seem to need, as Ritual said I would become a very either aggressive/frustrated person, or depressive one, depending on how I coped with the frustration, the latter being more likely.
I think we all need to continue learning in our lives, or we start to die, and painting does that for me, and god am I still learning lol :D

i actually find that i like my minis less and less as the years go by...i don\'t think that i\'ve ever been happy with any of my own paintjobs...i don\'t stress about it, i just try to enjoy the reult for a minute before the mini goes in the mail, and then i smile all the way to the bank to deposit the paycheck:D...

I just got back from dropping my daughter at college. One of her instructors said that an artist has a story to tell. They teach one medium to tell that story.

So many of my minis are nothing more than paint by number kits - flesh = fleshtones, armor = metal, cape = blue, etc. Every now and then, I feel I can tell a story with one of my minis.

just makes me feel good. I do not HAVE to paint or even own so much minis (loads of!) but I just can\'t resist : painting makes me quiet and cool, it\'s my zen attitude (combined with cycling), to forget the job and all problems. If I don\' paint for a moment, it make me anxious and uncomfortable, it\'s my drug (kinda )

Yeah creative outlet... :) Not very competitive either but competitions motivates me to improve and I work best if I have a deadline. That\'s why I continue to entering them...

Must summon up the courage to finish Yoda....

Use the force mate...

Sorry ;)

Peace and love...

This is meant to be CHEAPER than smack?! Damnit, I was considering class A drugs as a way of cutting down my spending on minis.

It\'s because I can\'t let go...

You are not buying enough pewter or paint. lol

Painting puts me in a \'right brain mode\' that I enjoy.

@Pelorat:
Careful there Pelorat, talent is nothing without self reflection and practice. And as Prophet said, there\'s always someone better. But I guess I had that punk attitude also at your ago, so just keep it coming and use that energy lol

Well, like I said, that was close to 20 years ago, so things have changed since then.

I did spend 4 years in art classes though (and 2 in college), got a lot of dirty looks from the teachers cos I paid more attention to my sketch books than class.. think I can safely say the desire was there, but the talent was not.

i paint for the adoration of the multitudes of fans i bring to my cause.

i paint for the little man.

i paint for the women who are astounded by my prowess with a brush.

but most importantly, i paint so that i can sell my miniatures for tons of dollars by claiming that they are \"pro-painted\"

that is why i paint........ thank you all....

*waits for applause*

still waiting.......

and waiting.................

damn it........ walks away with shoulders down.
