Why don\'t some people name their minis?

I got a complaint about this site that may seem like small potatoes, but not to me. Here are some great looking projects with a lot of work put into them, but they don\'t get noticed much. Look at them and guess why.

Valten on Elven steed

Ork Warboss

Ok, I forgot this guy\'s name but it should\'ve been printed on the box he came in.

I\'m not trying to be a jerk, I\'m trying to tell some of the site\'s members when you just leave a submission titled \"Another mini\" you\'re dropping a needle into haystack the size of a mountain. There are a Gajillion photos here titled \"another mini\", from dwarfs to robots to naked chicks, from masterpeices to metal dunked into black paint and stapled to a 40K base.

What\'s more you render the search engine useless. If someone want to see what people are trying with a mini they\'ll probably try to use the search engine right? Say they use the Search engine to look for \"Valten\", that image of Valten I linked to above will NOT get picked up. No one looking for Valten will find this guy cuz it\'s still called \"Another Mini\".

Some of you guys are putting a lot of effort just painting your minis and even more to make a good photo. Is typing Ork Warboss or what ever where it says name of the mini really too much work in comparison?

Yeah, in that case I don\'t know why they wouldn\'t name them... Most of the time, \"another mini\" is used by people too lazy to put in a name, yet a couple of these have detailed comments by the painter.. I dunno, I guess they miss the name feild or just don\'t care, but from day one I named everything I did, even if I stated the obvious. I beilive everyone should name their minis, that\'s what we have the search by name feature for!! :p

One reason that some people dont name there miniscould be because there new to the site and are not familar with how it all works, apart from that I really dont know why else.

Laziness is the most probable answer, although I have an alternative possibility based on my experiences when I was first posting minis here:

Sometimes, having selected the appropriate file to upload, named it, written a lengthy comment, and cast my vote, I have clicked \'sumbit,\' only to have the message \'no such file\' pop up. I\'ve always assumed that either my connection or the CMON server was too busy at the time. Clicking \'back\' on my browser often meant that it was necessary to re-enter most of the info about the fig, including the name. It\'s possible that some people (particularly those new to the site) forget to check their info over when they encounter this problem. I know that I always copy my comments to my clipboard before I click \'submit\' these days, just in case such a glitch occurs.

Yea, a month or two ago I was in a hurry and just wanted to submit a photo, and typed the name and everything but it didn\'t work and I hit back and resubmitted it and forgot to retype the name, but someone sent me a pm and I fixed it, so that time I just in a hurry.

Sometimes I won\'t initially put a name or any text below because sometimes after clicking to submit it will say \'no such file\'. Then when I go back to try again all the text is lost. So often I will just submit it \'bare\' and see if it will even load, THEN fill in the blanks. But I may have missed one now and then.

I don\'t even bother looking at the miniature. I just give them a 1, paste \"Another mini? Another 1. If you can\'t take YOUR hard work seriously enough to name it, why should I take time to rate it?\" in the comments and move on.

I think the problem is that the name field has this standard \"Another mini\" filled in. If that was removed and yet the upload would be unable to work without a title, people would be forced to enter a name. Personally, I put everything about my minis in the title/name. For example \"Confrontation, Clan of the Drunes: Persecutor\". Now if people look for \"Confrontation\", \"Drunes\" or \"Persecutor\" they find my picture, which is a good thing because it has a relevance for all three searches. It\'s a courtesy thing too, I think....

However, I usually don\'t look at the title if I\'m just browsing.

I’m not here to coddle. How hard is it to go and fix a Mistake? If you don’t know just ask. Not to mention, I have seen some of your comments that I thought were harsh. So I think it’s in the eye of the beholder.
I’m not worried about being a target. I’ve taken my stuff out of my gallery a long time ago. I don’t see the point of posting pictures for comments to better your technique if there 40,000+ pictures on this site, and half of them are “Another Mini”.

There no reason to try to think about imaginative names on non imaginative minis I think.:D And for some,that\'s just impossible to do.It isn\'t that hard tho...Change a letter or two in a common name, pick randomly letters in books and see what happens...That reminds an old White dwarf where you had ten pages about generating demon names.Yes an old era where some articles weren\'t not meant only to sell you some stuff;) Ok this article wasn\'t the best as it gave you names easier to pronounce with other parts of your anatomy than your mouth.
But what\'s the interest for you to use the search engine? Comparison? ??? Copy? Oh sorry that\'s Inspiration !!! :plol Curisosity? ;)
Sorry...:D

I use the search engine pretty often. For example, as you said, for inspiration. Or when a friend wants to see a particular mini, usually you can get a good picture from CMON. Or when I am looking at my mini, wondering \"What the heck is this bit?\". When I want to see how different colours look on a mini and how dark and light tones give a different appearance.

And nobody ever said the names need to be imaginative, but precide would be nice. I know I\'m currently painting a Haemunculus, where is the problem with giving him that title instead of \"another mini\"? It doesn\'t take much thought and allows for easier searches...

The reason for doing it is simple;
So people aren\'t familiar with all of the miniatures out there. Naming your work also find the same miniature and paint it.

I\'m not here to coddle either. I make harsh (but usually constructive) comments when they\'re justified. And I send personal messages to encourage people to name their minis. Not for every un-named mini, just the better painted ones. It\'s always a mystery to see an 8.0 painter who didn\'t name their work ???

Good point about the informational value of a name. It does help to know what a mini is called by the manufacturer, if you want to buy one! Also a good reason to put a note on your submission if the manufacturer is \"other\".

Hmmmmm how about just skipping the un-named mini, you seem to be letting it bother you a bit to much. I dont like voting on backviews but that does\'nt mean im going to give them an underservig mark just because of my personal preferences.
