WHY NNM AND SENMM

I am a Metalic paint fan as many of you out there have already noticed. What I cannot understand is NNM it always looks like a rock to me even on the confrontation minis. I know it looks alot cleaner but I still cannot help but think it looks like a rock.

As for senmm, the thing I don\'t understand about that is that the minis have this horizon line on their armor. While it looks great in many pictures on the table top it seems to mee it would look more like the armor had a scene on it. The reason I say this is most of the time I see wargaming my figures are always in formation. So SENMM wouldn\'t make much sense.

Can someone help me to understand why NNM i& SENMM s prefered?

I would not say it is preferred. Also, in wargaming it is likely very impractical to spend the time doing smooth NMM and SENMM on all your units... I think it looks quite nice on either Heroes, or display pieces however :D

What bothers me with the skyline-chrome-thingy is that in truth it should be reflecting a messy room with large teadrinking boys tossing dice. At least most of the time. :D

I think ZaPhoD has hit the nail on the head. NMM & SENMM are really techniques for the display or collector quality miniatures. To try to do a Rank and File with SENMM would be a nightmare. It could be possible for NMM, and in fact I think I remember a Highelves command group done like that which won a Golden Deamon.
While \'normal\' metallics are preferable for RAF\'s, the majority of Leader/Heros figures are expected to look a little special. The care and attention that both of these techniques reflects (pun intended!) helps pull the heroes forward.

Plus don\'t forget that RAF also stands for Rough As F***.lol

lollollollollollollol Now that would be a Golden Demon entry.....the refection of hundreds of sweaty little faces pressed against a cabinet....
But i dunno, I prefer the \'real\' metallics an yways, exactly because NMM only works from one angle, and although it looks great on photographs, I find it loses it\'s power when you see it in real life and turn it around in your hands. Another thing I don\'t like about it is that it is mostly done with very faded, flat colours, makes the models look like they fell in a vat of bleach...

A place for everything

And everything in its place.

NMM, SENMM and metallics each have their own style and none of them are the \"correct\" way to go. It largely depends on the artist , their style, and the miniature in question.
I think NMM and SENMM each look great when done by certain people.
Likewise I have seen some amazing metallics.
And as far as miniatures go, It seems it is almost sacreligious to paint a Rackham figure using metallics.
Likewise, seeing a demonhunter or a Warmachine seems out of place when not done in metallics.

Really though it is just the personal tastes of the artist and what they are trying to achieve.
None of them are right or wrong... just different. :)

Theres not much point of painting minis used solely for gaming in nmm senmm, unless youve loads of time and dont mind.
As far as Im concerned I dont mind either.I was just getting better at my metals when I decided to try nmm and senmm. This means that I havnt had much time to practice my metallics.
I also think that say GW LOTR minis are realistically sculpted so I paint them with metallics.Where as say Rackham are more cartoonish(I know what I mean),which is why they look better nmm, senmm.
As for chrome I think you have to look at the mini while telling yourself its chrome. If you look at it thinking its layers of paint youll never see it.
For my next mini Im going to paint a reflection in the chrome of me,naked with my camera.
lol

I think that one reason for the way NMM is admired by some is that it is a very difficult technique to fully master. Now I\'m not saying that doing perfect metalic metals is easy. But most of you will agree that NMM often demands a higher grade of precision to make it look convincing.

Why I started out in NMM? Simply because I hadn\'t bought any metalic paints yet. :)

Huhm.. didn\'t someone on ebay post a pic of a cooking pot he was selling (chrome) and it showed him butt naked with his cam ? :)

On the NMM subject.. I like both really much, but it is sometimes as only specific people can get the hang of NMM right.
But I like metallics even more when they\'re done right... (read as.. by Jakob Nielsen :D ) And I\'m constantly trying to improve my RMs (real metals ;) ) But also trying out NMM in a few days :)

Thats what I was refering to.There was an article in the paper a while back about the trend of doing this.Reflections in cutlery sets and kettles. One was a big fat women reflected in her tv screen.lol
Not that theres owt wrong with big fat women.:D

Well, I suppose it would make sense if they showed the reflected backs of the rank in front of them....
Now THERE is a challenge!

to further complicate that the senmm would also have to reflect the limbs of the mini also. After all the person/thing the armor belongs to usualy has a reflection:D

Of course, mixing NMM and metallics in the same army seems a little off too, but what do I know, I\'m just a lowly metallics-user :D

The thing I never understood about the \"naked man reflected in eBay kettle\" thing is... who the heck buys a kettle on eBay? You can get them anywhere. It was not a special kettle... (note, though, that the seller *posted* it as a deliberate act of exhibitionism, and it was not on eBay)

I personally like the look of nmm over metallics, i think metallics tend to look messy but then again i am using metallics on my golden demon entry so
