Why paint NMM

Holy Moly

Obviously opened a hornets nest with my topic......I hope no one who paints NMM thought i was slagging it off.

I\'ve never seen a model in my hands to really see what it looks like. It\'s just not really my cup of tea. I\'ve been painting for 14 years and never come across the method before.

I get the feeling that us painters with our heads firmly stuck in the metallics pot, are somewhat looked down upon, because we havn\'t used NMM.......

Anyway seconds out ROUND 2 ;)

NMM is like being able to juggle...

....It\'s cool if you can do it but you wont die if you can\'t.

It\'s a cool technique, and one which every serious painter should try to have a bash at. As I said, it\'s not the end of the Universe if it doesn\'t work for you, but if you can master the \'dark arts\', then that is just another tool in your toolbox and more kudos to you.

You could still become \'Number One\' however without ever using NMM..IMO..;)

the oldest examples i can find are in the 2nded eldar codex.
jain zars blade is blue and highlighted white. it only looks a little like colored metal but it is moving in that direction.

a more recent example is in the 3rd ed codex on page 26. the warps spiders webbing is definatly NMM and the avengers swords looks it to me to. altough that could be inked metals.

its NOT a company thing. rackham may use it extensively but they didn\'t invent it and aren\'t the only company to try it.

give it a go! you might like NMM eggs and ham.

Another reason to the \"why paint NMM\" question: because if you paint Rackham minis with old-fashioned metallics, people will giggle at you.
Sad but true... I\'ve seen it happen in a local shop, a Razheem that was nothing short of gorgeous got only a quick look and a casual \"Well, it\'s pretty, but it\'s not painted with the azimuthal light effect...\" (which is how SENMM is called here...) :flame:

Talion: I can\'t speak for anyone else, but I\'ve been finding as of recent I rather enjoy painting NMM more than metallics, and I like the way it looks better. I still switch between both, like when I do historicals, I almost always use metallics, but recently I\'ve been painting some wasteland savages, and I really do like the comic book feel that NMM gives. It just seems to fit with the models more. It\'s just stylistically what I enjoy. I\'m not a HUGE fan of SENMM, or the models that look like highly polished chrome.. while I think they are very skillfully painted, it just seems a little much, like adding a lense flare to any digital image.

Have you tried it at all? It can be frustrating and a challange, but as others have said, it\'s great to learn about considering light sources, and fun to play with.

Depending on how it\'s done NMM can look great on the table from all angles.

Unfortunately your last statement is a sad fact... there are schools of thought that if you don\'t paint NMM, you just can\'t run with the big boys, and that is sad, I think. I don\'t find it\'s true, really, but it\'s the technique du jour, so if you aren\'t sproting the latest, you are getting mocked by the \"in\" crowd. Like bellbottoms. ;)

I can see I\'ve been misunderstood here. so I\'ll go through a bit a a time and try and explain each point.

i really don\'t see how learning a new technique is a waste of time. even if you never intend to use it.

That isn\'t what I wrote.
How did you get to \"learning a new technique\" from what I posted?

NMM takes a lot of time to paint if you are to get it right. If it isn\'t just right it\'s particularly prone to looking weird.
Thus (and this is all IMO) if one is to paint a unit using NMM it is likely to take longer than metallics
Clear so far?
I feel that the technique doesn\'t look enough better to justify the effort ON TABLE.
IMO and YMMV and PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE YMMV this time guys...
I feel NMM to be wasted effort except in the cases I specified.

I\'m not trying to make people who use NMM out to be stupid or whatever you seem to have assumed.

if nothing else it will give better insight to judge the technique when used by others.

I don\'t see my opinion on techniques to be that important. This is a reason to use NMM I didn\'t even consider.

its popularity should have nothing to do with it.
if i started a thread saying layering was a stupid idea when drybrushing is obviously quicker then how would that be recieved.

No idea.
Dry-brushing is slow.
I didn\'t start the thread, I was responding to someone seemed to be asking for opinions.
I gave mine.

I really don\'t follow why anyone would get heated about different painting techniques. It\'s not like they\'re trademarked and copyrighted inventions of individuals or something.
Can you explain why you care if I prefer one technique or another?
I just don\'t get it.

If you re-read my post I didn\'t say people using NMM were stupid or that the technique is stupid... or anything even similar.
My post says (roughly) people want to argue over techniques need to get out more.

oh yeah and arguments are a lot of loud opinions.
shhh quiet opinions only! :p

That\'s an odd definition.

No.
I simply stated my opinion.

Sorry, don\'t mean to keep at this point, but...

Are you saying that when other people discuss NMM or any painting techniques, that they \"should get out more\", but when you discuss the same thing, it is simply stating your opinion?

I just don\'t understand the difference between having an opinion about a topic, and arguing about it.

Like I said, you have many valid points to your argument...er I mean opinion....;)

OK.
Who did I heatedly disagree with?
Who did I even have discourse with?
Nobody.
Thus, not arguing.

A dictionary might explain the words clearer I suppose.

In order to argue, one must disagree with someone.
Implicitly, this person or persons must have already posted and I\'d have to write something like \"Mr X, I disagree with you, because....\".
And then go on to argue my case with them.
That wasn\'t what happened.

agree to disagree

@aon14

The only thing I have taken exception with was the comment you made that \"people who argue painting techniques should get out more\". Maybe I have taken the comment out of context.

I think your opinions are just as valid as mine, or the next person who posts, and that is why I come to the forums in the first place. I WANT to see opinions, differing or not.

This is a forum, whose heading is \'Painting and Conversions\". I cannot imagine a better place to give opinions/or argue painting techniques.

I guess what really struck a nerve was the way it comes across. Like people who argue/state opinions on the forums for which it was intended are somehow \'beneath you\" and \'need to get out more\'. Like I said, maybe I have taken it out of context, and I apologize if I have.

No matter how much I try to persuade you, I don\'t think we are going to agree whether you are arguing or stating opinion. But that is no big deal. It doesn\'t matter. I will agree to disagree.

I also want you to know that I don\'t give the word \'argument\' a negative connotation. I think it is good to have a healthy exchange of ideas, persuading points, etc. etc..

Even the healthy discourse we are having now is...well, kind of fun! I was actually looking forward to your post.

I went and looked at the pics you have posted here, and I understand why you would feel the NMM is a waste of time. It would be near impossible to finish all those figs using it, especially when you get such good results without it.

You can comment back here if you want, but please feel free to message me or even e-mail me with additional comments.
