Why the hell bother???

I\'m on a rant...

Why spend time painting a mini, photographing a mini and then publishing that mini on this site and then not even bother to put any kind of write-up on it?

I\'ve just looked at two minis around about the 8 mark on early votes, yet there isn\'t a scrap of info or even a single word about how, why, where or when they did their piece(s)! I feel cheated a bit, as I like to listen and take on what people are trying to convey. No info on their ideas and bases and schemes? WHY BOTHER? Ooh, I just painted this, but I can\'t be arseed telling anyone about it! Maybe it\'s the artistic crap coming out!

Well, here\'s to you lazy arses who waste my time...:moon:

Yeah, that\'s about right :innocent:

I\'m definitely gonna have to agree with you. I always thought this site was more a comunity than a showcase, but it seems some people can\'t take the time out of their busy schedules to write a little blurb about the models they spend weeks painting.

Doesn\'t make sense to me, which is why I try to write even just a little bit on every piece I upload. If not a conversion tip or new painting style, then just an explanation of where I\'m coming from with the mini. I think it helps a bit, people usually respond more readily in the comments section if there\'s something to build from :)

Yep, can\'t disagree there. If you look at my stuff, I\'ve been commenting on my stuff since day one. I\'d rather come out and tell people what I was aiming for rather than say, for example.. \"Why are all those Bruised?\" on my Bruised Eye Tribe gobbos.

I also add in comments on what I thought I improved or what I thought was interesting. To me, people who don\'t comment on their pics are up for a ton of comments/messages from everyone. Heck, Honza basically made a NMM tutorial on his Rahzeem which was very useful starting out. I only wish more of the top artists would do so, and be more communicative than \"This is a mini.. I painted it.\"

You\'ve made me feel really bad. I\'m guilty of this offense. I\'ve had a few questions asked about my work so I guess a small description wouldn\'t be a bad idea. And to think I used to be annoyed when there was no description on a mini I liked. I promise I\'ll do better next time.

heh . . I usually write too much in my comments! This last time I took it easy . . .

Most of my figures have a story and I try to bring that out in my descriptions, rather than how I did this or that and the other.

Guilty as charged me Lud. :(

On the whole I tend to let the painting do the talking unless there\'s something in particular that must be pointed out. However, in retrospect after getting a few comments on some figures it would be nice to put a bit more info about the paint job, but I can\'t bear losing all those lovely comments by updating the image!

Perhaps I should make a belated new years resolution to put more info about my figures.

Hey, but even worse than not commenting on your own work is not bothering to title the figure properly! \'Another mini\' is just plain old bloody irritating! Funny coz I don\'t recall ever seeing the \'Another Mini\' range in the shops!

You\'re bigger than most...

I was tired and angry last night, but even now I still feel MEAN!

Thanks for the response Sturm and Artisan, I didn\'t direct my vitriol but you\'ve shown steel and character in coming forward with your pledges!

Let\'s spread our knowledge and share our thoughts...:innocent:

Guilty as charged.

Reverend\' you are right and I\'m guilty of not putting enough info on mini\'s.

I\'ve tried to remedy this with my more recent posts and will try to improve the information for future ones.

Let\'s be fair, it doesn\'t have to be a tutorial. It doesn\'t even have to be much of a write-up at all - a greeting/acknowledgement would be nice.

HI EVERYONE, HERE\'S MY MOST RECENT MINIATURE, PAINTED FOR MY AUNTIE\'S SILVER WEDDING ANNIVERSARY...

Ooooh, the fury burns! :flame:

To be honest, I don\'t always post a lot of info. Mostly I just blabber on a bit about what it is (like \"This is a Goblin. He plays Blood Bowl. He\'s dead within 5 minutes.\"). On the Orc cheerleader I posted today I gave some info about which parts are original and which are green stuff, but that\'s quite useless info since there\'s also a pic of the cheerleader before basecoats (yeah, she had green breasts then and they\'re still green now ;)). I mean, does it really help posting \"important\" stuff like \"I used Vallejo Burnt Umber for the basecoat of this Dwarf\'s teeth and the base was done with sand from granny\'s back yard\"? That\'s what the Comment function is for if people wanna know more, right?
I\'d say, post something to make your pic more personal, but please don\'t give mile-long lectures about funny techniques and used colours unless asked for.
No hard feelings I hope? ;)
Cheers,

Martijn

Actually, yes.
It is helpful to us \"novices\"who see something you\'ve done that really stands out. Especially if it is a special or new way which you did something, or the sand from Granny\'s backyard really makes the mini.
Say for instance A really cool troll who\'s teeth really stand out.
Just something like \" The teeth were based with burnt-umber\' then picked out with Ghostly grey and finally a wash of flesh ink and Future floor wax combined\".

Nothing stand out? how about \"Heres a really cool Troll\".
And as far as Artisans Edge is concerned, I would be really interested in your comments. I am impressed with your skills and have already visited your personal web site.
VERY good! :wow:

Thank you for the kind words Lurch. It\'s always great to hear. Feel free to drop me an email through my site if you have any questions about anything I\'ve done. I\'ll also share what I can in future posts too.

Another place where comments are a must is in the other category.. If the mini is from an old or strange manufactuerer, others might want to know where you got it. Also, if you have no idea where you got it, it\'s a good place to ask so that others who know will tell yas.

Personally, I\'m not bothered that some pics have nothing beneath them. Of course, I\'m pretty sure mine say something but that\'s just \'cause I can\'t keep my mouth shut lol

Sturm, if you think it\'s a problem and would like to add something, you can always comment on your own mini.

Sometimes....

There\'s just nothing to say! It IS \"here\'s my mini. I painted it.\"

I leave a small description if necessary, but try not to be long-winded. If I don\'t know the manufacturer, I\'ll even ask for other folks to try and identify it. (eg image #13552):D

IMHO, sometimes there\'s just nothing to say, because a picture is worth a thousand words.

Peace!

I think I may have put minimal info about a few of my posts, and if more was required/desired, I\'m sorry I didn\'t give more details. I can be loooooong winded when it comes to miniatures - as a friend kindly pointed out recently. Keeping that in mind, I went easy on the descritpions. However, I have requested comments, of which I have gotten very few compared to the votes I have gotten. (And given my 6.something ratings, I\'d like to know where I can improve.)

I guess maybe I should go back and re-edit my descriptions, and maybe someone will be kind enough to tell me what I did right or wrong?

Positives

It seems I\'m not alone and it also seems that there are some who don\'t feel the need to write-up their mini. I suppose it\'s all about personal preference, but sometimes it would be nice to have a little tiny glimpse into what people are doing...I\'m all for sharing ideas and if anyone ever asked me anything I\'d tell them what they wanted to know, and I feel that at least tackling that with some information on the posting is a very good start. :D

See you all

lack of comments......

@Reverend - i can understand your concern at not having any info about any particuar mini, but i can assure you that anyone capable of painting to those levels does put a hell f a lot of thought into the project/ it\'s not a case of flippantly rattling off the next few minis from the production line. it may well be one of confidence instead

let\'s put the shoe on the other foot for one moment

there are some of us (like me) who have only recently plucked up the courage to post our stuff in these hallowed halls and actively seek coment back. but not a word...

so why not add to the joy and comment (preferably constructively) on someone who has taken both the plunge andthe time to post their work here

thanks :D

I\'m on my way!

Just looking at your stuff now Ben! I do like to try and find time for comments like that too.

My point was though that if they put in that much effort, why not share their experience a wee bit ...;)

Like I said...

maybe some just need to be brought out of their shell

there\'s no way that i would have presumed to start spouting diatribe about how and why i created a specific piece as that is how I would have originally seen it

now that i know better i may be more forthcoming ;)
